March 31, 2022 - Chambolle night: A tiny sample of leftovers from a generous friend, was commenting that GC whites have a clear step up in terms of concentration and weight compared to 1ers based on my limited experience. This proved to be the case here - an absolute powerhouse of a wine with some secondary development, but still with a long way to go (barring premox). Very impressive finish.

July 4, 2016 - Richebourg Dinner (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore): Very similar impressions to the last bottle I tried a year ago. Very good, but not quite great. This was an unusually big and obvious for a Fontaine-Gagnard CBM, starting with a sweet nose of daisy flowers, ripe apple fruit, honeyed pears and sweet cream aromas, with liberal lashings of butter at the side, and just that bit of seashell mineral at the ends. The palate had a nice lemony freshness and acidity of the vintage, but it clearly leans towards the voluptuous side, with full flavours of cream and honey and sweet lemony fruit, just undercut by a nice stream of mineral and acidity and just a twist of lemon zest at the finish. If anything, this bottle felt a bit clumsier than the last one. It needs some time to lose its puppy fat and put on some complexity. It will make a very nice wine with time, but I do not think it will ever be a truly great one. Try again in 5 years.

October 30, 2015 - 1982, '89 and '90 Left-Bank Bordeaux Dinner (Imperial Treasure Shanghai, Ngee Ann City, Singapore): This was a nice start to the night. Not a perfect white Burg, but very good indeed. It had such a lovely nose, with gentle drifts of butter and cream, sweet red apples, some dried flowers, and some earthy, spicy, minerally accents around the sides of the bouquet. Beautiful. The palate was rich and round, with a surprising amount of depth for a 2007, showing a thick, almost oily fleshiness behind its well-integrated flavours of red apples and cream layered over a mouthwatering white fruit base on the midpalate. All this was punctuated with by a citrusy streak of 2007’s bright acidity, which help to keep the wine relatively tight and focused all the way into a nice finish seasoned with a little mineral and spice. My only issue is that the wine seemed a bit heavyset at points, with a touch of alcohol floating out at its edges - quite unusual given Fontaine-Gagnard’s usually spare, elegant style. Overall though, very good indeed, and it has the chops to last for many years barring any premature oxidation.
