  • We regret we didn´t drink this a couple years ago. It has nice color, but is thinning and not as full of flavor as it would have been. A typical xinomavro nonetheless.

  • Loved it in 2015, but so much in 2017

  • I believe it has hit its sweet spot. A pretty wine with character.

  • Has helix up nicely. Strawberry cherry and an iron core that maintains it's structure. It will be interesting to see what happens to this over the next year or two.

  • Scarlet with a tinge of orange edge. Fairly full with a dose of dry tannins, but this is quite nice and a terrific wine for the price (16$). Nice dark bitter cherry, probably peaking right now, but seems that this might last.

  • Clearly developed bouquet of funky notes, cooked vegetables, ripe red fruit/berries. Medium bodied and smooth palate with resolving tannins, showing a bit fading mellow fruit with some scorched and tarry notes. Nicely matured with a lot of tertiary flavors. Has reached its peak already; won´t get any better in the cellar. Great value for 12€.

  • A sweet flowery bouquet. Bright earthy character with a long tangy finish. Terrific bargain. May age but could implode if not careful.

  • 4/5 - Similar to my previous review, but nearer to the end. Still dry and tight, Strawberry, tart cherry, straw, aromas and flavours. Still a great wine for the price.

  • Earthy, with leather and foresty scrub notes adding nuance to bright red cherry flavors. High acidity. Medium finish. Tasted blind, and suspected it was Italian.

  • Light, tasty raspberry with refreshing acidity. Got a bit acidic after it was opened for a while, but overall quite nice. Reminded me of a Pinot noir.

  • Last bottle and best I've had. Fruit and tannin have integrated well. Beautiful floral aromas, red fruit, dried herbs, medium body and fine drying tannin. 91

Day 2: This is really singing. Tannin is now more integrated and the cherry/raspberry flavours are prominent. I would say that 2016/17 will be peak drinking. 92+

  • A medium red with a nose redolent of stone fruit. The tannins impart a pleasant dryness although the body is a bit light. Not overly complex but very nice for the price point. Probably at its peak.

  • Translucent, pale pomegranate color with a developed orange rim and maroon core. Fragrant and very complex nose with developed, savory aromas of leather, sun-baked earth, crunchy red berries, sweeter dark fruits, oolong tea, a little bit of pruney character, light notes of tar, a hint of apricots and a touch of raisiny sweetness. The wine is light-to-medium bodied, dry and quite lean with mature flavors of raisins, dried figs, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of stony minerality, light olive notes and a hint of leather. The wine comes across as rather structured with its high acidity and rather grippy and grainy medium tannins. The finish is very dry and noticeably tannic with a lot of mouthdrying grip and intense, developed flavors of stony minerality, some sweet raisiny fruits, a little bit of balsamic vinegar and a hint of dried figs.

A nice and complex Greek red with a lot of structure left, but the fruit seems to have started to give in. Overall the wine feels quite aged and perhaps a bit past its peak - most likely the wine has been more vibrant and fruity when it wasn't dominated by the dried-fruit flavors. Still pretty nice stuff, but the tightly-knit structure typical of Xinomavro really makes the wine crave for food. I wish I had caught the wine in a bit younger phase. Nevertheless, great value at 11€. Drink up.

  • Opened and drank over the course of the evening, fairly light bodied, some drying tannins remaining but this may be close to its peak. Loads of strawberry and tart cherry aromas and flavours. Tannins are still very dry and tight, im not sure there will settle before the fruit starts to die out. This held up pretty well to being paired with steak but may do better with a lighter meat like chicken. Again, great QRP, you dont see this structure in a bottle at this price, though not built to last too long.

  • Gentle decant, very little-to-no sediment observed, a lightly stained cork, and a dusty rose appearance with some bricking on the rim. Very mature, Old World nose of damp wood, herb/mint, black tea, and orange peel. Not much of anything left on the attack, but some damp earth, savory (olive?) notes, and soft oak are present on the midpalate. The finish has a nice, soft vanilla quality to it. Medium acid and medium tannins give this a nice, balanced structure. I can definitely see where this would have had a very firm structure a couple of years ago (like the other tasting notes have said).

If you have this hanging around, drink it soon. It has the structure to be OK for a bit longer, but who knows what the nose and palate will do if left for another year. As is, it's "very good," 86/100.

  • Aromatic and robust this is an amazing QPR. The 2008 is slowly going downhill so start drinking up what you have got left.

  • A bit disappointing. Yes i pick up the Nebbiolo comparisons but I found it too light, with little complexity. Seemed long in the tooth and has lost some of its essence. Not unpleasant, but I wish I had consumed it earlier.

  • Not altogether unpleasant when you get a glimpse of fruit, but the tannin is so all encompassing that I fear the wine will dry out before it is ever fully integrates. It does however have a bit of complexity with an earthy nose, red cherry, strawberry and meaty/olive flavours, which is interesting.

  • Sight: wine is clear, bright, medium to pale concentration, ruby to garnet with slight brick rim variation. No gas evidence, no sediment, medium to light extraction with no staining evident. Medium legs.
Nose: clean, medium + intensity complex aromas. Noteworthy from start and Improving within 10 minutes out of bottle. Youthful, old world earth and fruit driven nose. Red berries, tomato, some dried rose flower petals and herbs, maybe strawberry raspberry tea. Mineral and earth are present, but integrated and matched with fruit.
On the palate, more tea, black tea with red fruit accents. Cherry and strawberry with olive juice acidity and anchovy? Aka, some dark salinity, which works; Totally unique.
Fruit on the palate is brighter even than the nose. And at the same time displays a slight dried or sun baked quality. Very nice. Getting better all the time. Wood is present. Aged in oak I believe. Medium plus acidity, medium plus tannin, but working in well. medium plus alcohol, Not too "hot". Finish is medium length. Complexity is up there, medium plus. Great old world wine! I'm going to buy more.
This wine really is reminiscent of a barbaresco or a Barolo in that it has the incredible structure in acidity, alcohol, tannin, flavor, and aroma while appearing visually less concentrated and viscous. Very clear and light in the glass. So light in feel, but big where it counts. Impressive. I haven't tasted much Nebbiolo, just a 2009 barbaresco produttori and yesterday a 2009 pio cesare Barolo. Both were good. And So is this. Maybe this is even more intricate olfactorially. I will go get some more. 90 for very good because of the quality to price ratio

  • Very nice with grilled lamb chops. Tasted fine the second time.

  • One of most popular Boutari wines, widely known; comes from Macedonia, 100% Xinomavro, matured in oak barrel for 12 months. Tasting: deep red color, aromas of red fruits like red currant and little plum, oaky vanilla and spices. As wine has spent some time in bottle it revealed more with oak and deeper aromas. Between medium and full bodied, good balance and flavors, soft tannins. Enjoyable with food.

  • Medium(-) ruby, transparent and clear, fast moving legs @13.5% abv. Medium(-) aromas of red cherries, dried leaves, wood. Dry, medium-medium(+) acidity, low-medium(-) tannin, medium alcohol and body. Medium(-) flavors cherries, dried fruits. Coarse acidity and tannins, rather simple. Medium length, linear, with dry tannic finish, rustic.

  • Classy and old-world restrained: brickish color, strawberry/cherry popsicle, cola, red peppercorn, and herbs given structure by soft tannins and a savory, graphite and bark base. As others have noted, close to a Pinot or older Nebbiolo. Seems to be just in the right spot now.

  • Nice wine. I cannot believe I bought eight bottles of it.

  • Non, un vin sans pogne. Peu éloquent sans panache.

  • Moderately aromatic nose of pepper and red fruit. Dry entry transitions to black pepper and some mid-dark fruit with a light to medium body and a medium, dry finish with some underlying acid and mid-dark fruit. A kind of cross between a pinot and a lean cold-climate syrah.

  • An impressive red, and my first known experience with this interesting varietal. Fairly standard nose. Red and dark fruits, minerality, graphite, etc., that strengthen from front to back. Many red wines from the Balkans tend to show stewed fruit and excessive heat; this one didn't. The wine finishes with a flurry of Bordeaux-like minerality. I probably would have believed that this was a Cabernet Franc heavy Bordeaux from the Right Bank, or Graves, if told so...but, the varietal shows unique characteristics. 88-90.

  • Intense aromas right off the bat. Red fruits, leather, herbal. Palate was very rustic and old world in nature. Dry, tannic with a firm acidic backbone. This wine is evolving quicker than expected, but it was very savoury.

  • Ringer for Piedmont Nebbiolo and a good value too. Nose was a tad mute on first pour but after breathing in bottle for an hour it revealed a complex nose of moderate intensity: orange pekoe tea, pot pourri, cinnamon, cloves, cherry candy, red licroice. Palate is light and quite tannic. Not a bad length of finish for the money. Good value.

  • THis is stunning value....drinks like a barbaresco
    So floral, spicey and focused!

  • Aromatic, red berry, brewed tea, toast, nut, leather and dried flowers on the nose. Medium-full with good grip and an evolving finish.

  • A clear and brown tinged red. A very nice nose that had a depth, you could smell it for a while without loosing much of an interest. It was an inky wine that, while not be rounded all bout, it was very bold and dark around every which way. Heavy in the dark, heavy in the mid and back. It was not hard to take down in good time, however, and ended up being a pleasing, but sweat-inducing, wine.

  • Very dry with strong tannin, they haven't quite settled, this could easily sit for a few more years. Garnet-Brick colour. Aromas of roses, and oak. Dry full bodied. I see the where the comparisons to Barbaresco come om. this gets an extra point for value. You will never find a wine with this structure and definition for $12.

  • Sour cherry and bright raspberry nose with sligth florality, liquorice, dried herbs, graphite, dusty cedar and traces of vanilla and coffee.
Medium bodied palate of considerable structure and bright fruit. Healthy tannic grip, refreshing acidity and red apple to peach to raspberry fruit with chewy liquorice texture and dusty wood. Good length.
Focused performance. Fine style. Rustic charm. No BS. Absolute value.

  • New vintage of a popular producer in my local wine stores...great price. Really surprised at how tasty this was, especially for summer and with the lighter food i'm eating these days. Rusty red in glass -looks older than it is! Nice nose of dark slight stewed fruit/raisens and some light woodsy oak. Palate is light to medium bodied, a little thin, but structure is decent due to nice acid and some light but coating tannin. Aromatics carry onto palate and finish is medium length and fades to light vanilla oak.

Like the style given the circumstances as stated. 14$ @ MLCC

  • Took forever to open up, but after about five hours it tasted somewhat like Beaulolais and was getting better, albeit with a real note of sour cherry on the finish. Will open the next bottle in about two years.

  • Dark ruby. Medium viscosity. Characteristic aroma of Naoussa's finest grape Xinomavro; lively fruit like cherry(amarena), fresh plum and blackberry. Soft cedar tones together with black olives and dried tomatoes. Opulently and balanced flavors of dark fruit and fine oak. Vivid structure. Persisting finish.

  • Decanted and poured: transparant red, 4. Rather closed nose. Dry old school taste. fine with food.
The next day the non-decanted remainder in the bottle revealed a elegant nose, roses, spicy, fruit. Fine wine that requires some air to open up right now. Drink now - 2016 (maybe later)
Infact I would say this is somewhat Italian Nebbiolo like
