My last and final tasting note of my 6th bottle of ‘08 Gloria. Similar to prior notes over the years, but slightly better. Lean, slightly austere, and a glass full of tobacco/cigar box. Lacks a central core of fruit, but still enjoyable. Not the best vintage of Gloria.

Cherries and dark as well as red berries in the bouquet, some vanilla and rustic impression, sweet spices as well. On the palate the same impressions; juicy dark berries, a slight touch of sweetness, good acidity and tannin with a pleasant bite. Beautiful wine which shows some maturity now. but has enough bite for probably at least another 5+ years.

A rather dry version of Gloria in this less than great year. I much prefer the 2009 and 2010 over this vintage. the fruit is subdued and drying tannins dominate. Average.

Attempt to see if longer decant would help Tannins. Not so. This bottle was a rerun of the previous bottle despite a 4 hour full decant. It didn't hurt the wine either, so perhaps next bottle will be even longer.

Okay. I thought it was a bit flat, also comparing to for example cantemerle 2008, and there was little depth. Tannins still there but not much to balance that out with. If that makes sense.

This time instead of opening it and letting it decant, I Coravined into small bottle and left for 1 hour.
Compared with last time (where I decant for 3 hours), this was so much more open. Maybe pouring through the coravin needle and down the side of the bottle really helped open it up.
The fruit was coming out, lovely complexity. Good fruit on the palate. Rough Tannin, good nice length.

I was hoping for more. Lacking fruit concentration, pronounced tobacco and black licorice, some noticeable oak, abrupt finish. It does get better after an hour decant and when paired with food. However, it is still lacking soul.

Needs time to open. Initially a bit oaky and mute.
After 3 hours: Nose: dense red and black fruit, slight leather and earthy, Palate: pleasant, sour red fruit, med to short length. Med tanin.
I enjoyed, good wine, just not yet at the 90 point mark at this stage of development. Im highly convinced that a few more years will integrate the oak better. For now, Next bottle I’ll try to bottle breathe for 10 hours to see if it shows better.

Bought a brace of these from a French supermarket in 2009 and lay dreaming in the cellar ever since. Bricking at the rim - maturing well. Nose of vanilla, a medicinal note (but not in a bad way), leather. Classic St Julien, medium bodied, charm personified, a thing of beauty. Strongly recommended. Probably not one to hold for more than 5yrs.

Turns out the last of the case note from august wasn’t right. This one is, I think, the definite last of the case. And, inevitably, performs slightly better than the last and easily the best overall. Still time ahead of it but in such good form now, it’s worth drinking.

Last of the case. This wine has drunk consistently well over the last few years, with no duds; that seems all too rare. After an hour or so in the decanter, it shows as a well integrated, very smooth, slightly spicy wine with good length. Others say it will last another 3+ years, which I think is right, but it’s also very enjoyable now ... and in 3+ years you will want to drink your 2005s and maybe start the 2009s of course

one hour decant, bought on release, perfect cork robe showing some red highlights, not inky, looks like bordeaux should nose - the nose was humming at mid level. it was typical bordeaux just tuned down a bit with notes of cassis, pipe tobacco and some clean leather. all on point but again, just turned down palate - really nice length with dusty tannins and some healthy acidity. this wine is hovering around red fruits , well into secondary zone. like the palate, this just seems a bit turned down a gage or two lovers of " classic" claret will enjoy this. it wont bring fireworks but is surely "correct" if you have bottles of this, there is no worries in opening these. that was my only bottle and happy that i opened it when we did. drink now and over the next 3 years

This has slowly evolved into a better more mature wine. Restrained on the nose but it opens up with a 1 hour decant. A bit short and abrupt on the finish. I wish this wine had more depth to it. Black currant, anise, and pencil shavings clearly evident in the glass.

Had not tried a bottle in over a year and this was much better than previous bottles. We opened it two hours before dinner. The nose was dark fruit. The palate was blueberry, plum, tobacco and a touch of fig. The finish was moderate. I guess it is getting better with age.

Tasted over two nights...it did not get better the second night unfortunately. No finesse or sophistication here at all. Dark in color. Big tannins and oak that almost overwhelm the fruit and terroir. Almost think the fruit will disappear before it settles. Don't have many '08s but think drink now or take a chance to hold for a long time to see if it balances out.

Deep ruby, medium intensity aromas of dark cherries, blueberry jam, blackberries. On the palate: medium to full body, medium acidity, tongue and teeth staining. Medium tannins. Cherry, blackberry, vanilla with some oak. Ready to drink, finish was abrupt on the first sip but lengthen as it breath. A welcoming, not intimidating left bank. I liked it. Drank at Chattams place from the sommelier Peter recommendation. It’s a beautiful ready to go Bordeaux. Medium in body and fully mature, this wine gives a both newcomers and veterans alike a true representation of the terroir of St Julien. Fruit forward but not overly sweet and a smooth finish. This wine doesn’t have the complexity of the super seconds from 2008 but it does have resolved Tanins which makes it easy to drink now. This is perfect for beginners to Bordeaux or anyone who loves Bordeaux but doesn’t want to open his 2009s. Drink now

Ready to go, this medium bodied, elegant charmer hits the spot with its soft, pure, earthy, spicy red fruit character. You can enjoy this now, and over the next decade and probably for at least a few more years after that.

Better than the bottle I had two months ago. Dark fruit on the nose. The palate was dark berry, plum, licorice and thyme. The finish was moderate in length and deeper in flavor than it was in July.

We opened let sit for two hours, re-corked and took to the club for our July 4th BBQ. Dark fruit on the nose, the palate was berry, plum, licorice and a touch of thyme. The problem was all the flavors were muted. The finish was medium. A decent wine but just lacking something.

No formal notes. Red and dark berries, some bell pepper and not really showing itself. I hope the wine will improve with some additional ageing. Have two more bottles, so there will be a follow up. 87 - 88 for today.

The crowd is right. Mediocre, lacking weight, weakened fruit (plum primarily). Positives: clean, good mouthfeel, decent structure, not overly tannic. OK. This is rolling downhill. If it was ever rolling uphill in the first place.

Age showing out here, but does have a nice viscosity. Red flowers, backed by mainly oak influences, but little or no fruit. A rather faded expression of cassis, cedar and smoky oyster sauce. Comes across as tired and thin on flavour; lacking vibrancy. The best days are behind it.

this should have been drank already. hollow Gloria, that is acidy, tannic & without any fruit left. it might be still o.k. with a peppersteak or so - if you have some left. don't decant it, will get worse yet. very disappointing for Gloria, as others (2001, 2003, 2005) are quite good PQR indeed. I hope the 2008's are not all like this . . . . .
There is some sweet dark fruit left but not much. Mostly earth and muted tones. Not very interesting or pleasurable to drink. Will be drinking my remaining 2 bottles soon.

Almost over the hill? Thin Bordeaux flavor profile with tobacco, black licorice, green herb. Don’t think this has the stuffing or fruit to get better with anymore age. Drink up. Uninteresting.

30 minute decant. Eggplant purple. Subdued nose of eggplant, earth, paste, sage and French burlat cherry. Flavors are similar with some acidic bitterness, gravel, smoke and slate. Medium bodied with medium tannins and acidity. Pretty long finish so likely to improve in time. Not really my style.

Popped and poured, 59 degrees- Oak up front, light cedar, brambles are noted. Tannins are very round but still a bit forward. Mild Black fruit is somewhat masked by the wood. Will decant and give some air... After decanting a half hour, the wood subsides, some complexity comes out, fruit is a bit more noticeable. Balance improved. I think this is likely a wine to hold a few more years, but not for the long term. After an hour open, it is fairly decent, but not great. Not surprising for $42 however. I rate it as a fair QPR. Excellent with herb rubbed roasted chicken and peas... good finish and definitely a 90 point wine, I'm giving it 91 since it was just what I needed tonight.

Solid wine but still young. Good dark color. Smoke and plummy fruit on nose. Medium bodied with crisp acids and fairly tannic, forest loam, cassis fruit and lots of wood in this. Opened up after double decant. Will be better in 3-5 years

Still seems quite closed, tannins are still quite rough. Opaque purplish scarlet color on pouring. Aromas are great - floral, red and dark fruit, some herbal complexity, a bit of minerality - but flavors do not follow through on the expectation set by the nose. Even after a few hours in the glass, it has only opened the slightest bit. This is the first of six bottles in my cellar - I will plan on opening a second bottle late in 2016 with the expectation that with some cellar time this bad boy will open a bit and become a bit more refined, like the proper gentleman it should be!

Popped and poured and enjoyed over two hours after dinner with my wife. Pretty classic in terms of flavor profile showing cassis and some savory elements. Perhaps lacking a bit of concentration. Blind Tasting Challenge (Tribeca Wine Merchants): Not very expressive, showing ripe black fruit, soil and smoke. Sour, tough, and backward, concentrated, but very rustic and tart with sandy tannins. This is tough right now. I guessed Loire.

From one of the better values out of St. Julien, this young wine appears not quite ready for business. The nose took around 90 minutes to come around, with dark fruit, clove, leather, and tobacco. The fruit is definitely in the background here, and I hope it reveals itself with more time. At this point, this is a bit austere and tannic. Finishes nicely but with some drying. While this is still a good value, I will wait for another year or two to open another. This is another example of a 2008 from Bordeaux that is fairly austere and not drinking well right now; it's interesting to note that 2009s are currently more charming and approachable.

First time to taste this vintage of Chateau Gloria. Thought I would try one young to see where it is at in its evolution. Much to my surprise, it opens up beautifully after 90 minutes of aeration. Beautiful nose of tobacco / cedar with blackberry and cassis fruit and lots of black licorice. While the finish is still a bit lean and tight, this is only due to its youth. In 5 more years, the tannin will soften and this wine will be silky smooth. If you want to drink it now, do what I did and drink with rack of lamb with a kosher salt crust. The fat and salt will soften the finish. Very nice wine!

Accessed via Coravin, 17/01/15 Infanticide perhaps, but that's the beauty of Coravin: getting an early sneak preview and tasting the same bottle over the course of a few years. This is definitely still young but nevertheless very drinkable. Rich ripe fruit with touches of cedar and oak and blackberry. A little simple now and will no doubt evolve over time.

Popped and poured. This is a solid purple wine with some moderate sediment that drops out at the end of the bottle. On the nose, I get rocks, plum, pine needle, and a very slight bit of burn. In the mouth, this is a stern and brambly wine, one that is still somewhat tight and without a lot of fruit. The finish continues the plum sensation, albeit with a tannic overlay. Overall, this wine is still in its shell and needs time. There is an austerity to this that may flow from the vintage, but I think time will make it yield. 90 points with upside potential.

Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of deep intensity ruby color, with legs. Nose: Clean, with medium intensity aromas of black fruit such as blackberry and black cherry, sweet spice of cloves, herbaceous notes of blackcurrant leaf, herbal notes of fennel, pungent spice of pepper and licorice. The wine is youthful. Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has medium (+) tannin, a bit bitter and grippy in texture. Medium in alcohol, it has full body with medium intensity flavors of black fruit such as black cherry and plum, sweet spice of cloves, vegetal notes of black olive, animal notes of meaty. The wine has a medium finish. Conclusion: Acceptable quality St-Julien with reasonable concentration, showing fair complexity but the nose is a bit too vegetal and herbal, quite a surprise for a wine from this commune. The palate is in balance with good structure, with fair intensity and a reasonable length on the finish. Overall the wine is also a bit too young to drink now, and can benefit from further ageing of another 1-2 years.

Day one: 30 min decant, very heavy on the oak and cedar on both the nose and in the medium weight body, some earth, lean fruits, slightly tart finish.
Day two: now the fruit has come out to balance beautifully with the cedar on both the nose and palate, now has a much less angular and acidic feel, still a touch of damp earth, moderately long finish, fine tannins.
Obviously, need to decant well in advance, or wait about 5 more years.

Popped and poured. Inky black cherry color. High expectations. Closed nose with a bit of barnyard. Medium body with less tannins than I would have expected. Non-offensive flavor with hints of plum and black cherries, but nothing remarkable either. Will give it an hour to decant.
Opened up a bit after an hour. Better mouthfeel and flavor after an hour. Stronger black cherry flavor. Nose closed up.
Nose still closed 1.5-2 hours after opening. Turning a bit sour. Not much aftertaste and not much of a tail.

I've been disappointed by this wine in the past, so I didn't expect much last night when I opened one of my last bottles. This bottle still had some fruit, and didn't taste of stewed prunes or overcooked broccoli. Instead, this was a delicate wine with subdued notes of cassis or black cherry that rolled off the tongue and down the throat like a gentle spring rain. There was not much length or complexity, but it was thoroughly enjoyable.
I would drink this up now if I still had any in my cellar.
PNP...my wife did NOT like this. Not giving a lot on the nose. Dark, dense nose with some vegetal spice notes. Palate seemed dense as well with black fruit with tobacco & spice. Seemed fresh to me with a lot of acidity. For the 1st hour, it wasn't great. 2nd hour, it fleshed out with more balance & nuance. Still not a stunner though. Good it only was $28/btl. Some wine shops are selling this close to $50/btl in town still!!!

This bottle was watery, vegetal, bland, unpleasant and generally disappointing.
As a neophyte Bordeaux buyer with a limited budget, I have wondered whether to buy good chateaux in average vintages or inexpensive chateaux in good vintages. Based on the 2008 wines I have tasted, average vintages may not be worth buying at any price, unless perhaps one plans to drink them very young.

Not much going on. Some chocolate and dark fruits that quickly fade, leaving the taste of prunes. There is not much tannin or acidity as far as I can tell.
This is every bit as good as wines that cost 40% less. The 2009 Bordeaux start to seem sensible by comparison.

Purple core w/ ruby edge; dark fruit profile on nose, juicy, fleshy, plummy, velvet texture, good French oak, mix of red and dark fruit on the palate, menthol note, soft tannin, very little Bordeaux characteristics to me- seemed more like syrah. I like the syrah comparison, but others looking for Left Bank should give this some time to shed the baby fat.

Perhaps the earliest this wine should be drunk and it gives a good taster of what is to come. Remarkably smooth with good cassis and a touch of menthol, although a little flat it is really excellent, would happily take some more bottles to keep as would like to drink in a few more years.

Dark purple. Decanted 3 hours and still quite closed. Dark berries, cassis, some talc on the nose. Medium to full bodied, dark fruit, although well hidden by the chalky tannins which run all through the wine. Fresh and very drinkable although I expect this will improve over the next few years. Just missing a little concentration on this finish which is medium at best.

Very fresh and lively profile driven by mouthwatering acidity and mellow, mostly integrated tannins. Flavor profile is all red-berry fruit with just a tiny hint of herbs and menthol. Somewhat one-dimensional at this stage but what's there is enjoyable. Classic young Bordeaux, quite delicious. Not a stellar QPR at $32 but I'm happy to have a few more bottles. Did not decant.

Hard to read I think. Deep purple colour, graphite and black fruit on the nose, which follows through to the palate. Nice, soft tannins and medium to long finish. Elegant, but perhaps a little one dimensional (for now?). This wine might be a little "dumb" at the moment, so I'll wait another 2-3 years before popping another.

First of 6 bottles, this one was tasted to see how it develops over time. Gave it about 5 hrs of air before drinking. Deep, deep purple wine. Nose with nice dark fruit & cedar. Really quite strong tannins, though rather nice and certainly not too severe. On the palate also quite fruity, with really good length. Should get rather good when the tannins soften in about 3-5 yrs time.

After 3 hours:
Nose: dense red and black fruit, slight leather and earthy,
Palate: pleasant, sour red fruit, med to short length. Med tanin.
I enjoyed, good wine, just not yet at the 90 point mark at this stage of development. Im highly convinced that a few more years will integrate the oak better. For now, Next bottle I’ll try to bottle breathe for 10 hours to see if it shows better.

Last of the case. This wine has drunk consistently well over the last few years, with no duds; that seems all too rare. After an hour or so in the decanter, it shows as a well integrated, very smooth, slightly spicy wine with good length. Others say it will last another 3+ years, which I think is right, but it’s also very enjoyable now ... and in 3+ years you will want to drink your 2005s and maybe start the 2009s of course

one hour decant, bought on release, perfect cork
robe showing some red highlights, not inky, looks like bordeaux should
nose - the nose was humming at mid level. it was typical bordeaux just tuned down a bit with notes of cassis, pipe tobacco and some clean leather. all on point but again, just turned down
palate - really nice length with dusty tannins and some healthy acidity. this wine is hovering around red fruits , well into secondary zone. like the palate, this just seems a bit turned down a gage or two
lovers of " classic" claret will enjoy this. it wont bring fireworks but is surely "correct" if you have bottles of this, there is no worries in opening these. that was my only bottle and happy that i opened it when we did.
drink now and over the next 3 years

Drink now

this should have been drank already. hollow Gloria, that is acidy, tannic & without any fruit left. it might be still o.k. with a peppersteak or so - if you have some left. don't decant it, will get worse yet. very disappointing for Gloria, as others (2001, 2003, 2005) are quite good PQR indeed. I hope the 2008's are not all like this . . . . .

Really quite strong tannins, though rather nice and certainly not too severe. On the palate also quite fruity, with really good length. Should get rather good when the tannins soften in about 3-5 yrs time.

Liked this a lot. Lots of primary dark fruit, mixed with some tobacco/smokiness and a little spice. Tannins were there but not overpowering. Nice long finish.

Day 1-ok. Day 2-better. Day 3-less than ok.
Can't figure this wine out-very fruity and primary. Not much complexity and the nose just doesn't wow me.
It's a well made wine for the price at $18. My 2nd of 6 bottles and hoping the others improve with time.

Rated based on potential as I hated this thing night 1. Better night 2, but still too fruity and primary. Has good balance, nice tannins and acidity. Medium body with 20-30 second finish. Earth and oak on the finish. Nose opens up, but still hoping for something more.

2008 Gloria offers cassis and dark cherry with herbs in the nose. Already drinking well, this medium to full bodied, easy to drink wine should offer pleasure early. 90 Pts
