9/13/2015 (Keswick Vineyards and Barboursville Vineyards)

Regular tasting at Keswick Vineyards and the Library 1821 tasting at Barboursville which I highly recommend.

Whites at Keswick

Four whites, majority in stainless steel and one in French Oak. One rose which was surprisingly refreshing

Reds at Keswick

Seems to be a lot of Touriga this year in Virginia, not a big fan of that varietal. One in hungarian oak with a ton of gamey and meaty notes in the nose, but really disappointed in the taste.

Cab Francs at Barboursville

Will come back to visit, and possibly buy some in the next best year in Virginia

  • 2013 Barboursville Vineyards Cabernet Franc Reserve - USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Orange County
    Color: Ruby Red
Nose: Bell Peppers, dust and chalk
Palate: Balanced, cassis, low to medium body
Opinion: Only $25.00 not bad at all especially for a virginian wine (87 pts.)
  • 2007 Barboursville Vineyards Cabernet Franc Reserve - USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Orange County
    Color: Dark Ruby Red
Nose: Prunes most likely due to the age of the wine
Palate: Stronger tannins than the 2013, hits you in the front of the mouth
Opinion: A little high in price for this wine, but solid and overall I was very surprised with this tasting due to my other experiences with Virginian wine. (90 pts.)

Cab Sauvs at Barboursville

Age does some nice stuff to these wines

Petit Verdot at Barboursville

A little light, but I have not had another single varietal Petit Verdot before.

  • 2010 Barboursville Vineyards Petit Verdot Reserve - USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
    Color: Purplish Red
Nose: Cinnamon, nose is hard to distinguish
Palate: Light and short to medium finish
Opinion: slightly too sweet, if I could get one to put away for a few years that could be very interesting. (86 pts.)

The Octagon Blend at Barboursville

The main reason to visit this estate!

  • 2012 Barboursville Vineyards Octagon - USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
    Color: Purplish red
    Nose: Very gamey
    Palate: Stronger tannins, medium finish
Opinion: Only downside is the medium finish, if it had a longer fuller finish this could be an amazing wine. (90 pts.)
  • 2010 Barboursville Vineyards Octagon - USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
    Color: Dark Ruby Red
Nose: Lots of fruits on the nose, dark fruits
Palate: Cassis and fuller finish than the 09
Opinion: Would be interesting in a couple years (90 pts.)
  • 2009 Barboursville Vineyards Octagon - USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
    Color: Purplish Red
    Nose: Gamey, and little cassis
    Palate: Medium body and cassis
Opinion: Was told to definitely try this wine, as for a virginian wine, it is very impressive (90 pts.)

Faith has slightly increased in VA wine!
