Tasted by CJB20136 on 7/1/2022 & rated 85 points: Full disclosure that Virginia wines are not my favorite, but had this one since 2014 aging and thought it would be interesting to taste. Not bad, not great. Definitely get cherry, leather, and tobacco on the nose...a few swirls and more cherries to my nose. Long finish, a bit sharp to my palate. Out of all VA wines I've tasted Barboursville would be the only one I would drink. Buy hey, I'm a wine snob and know it. (793 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 6/10/2021 & rated 89 points: WIML89

Tasted non blind.

Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of blueberries, plums and banana. Flavors of blueberries, plums and banana. Medium acidity, medium tannin, medium to full bodied. Drink now. (1392 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 5/22/2021 & rated 93 points: Decanted 1 hr, last tasted January 2018,

This bottle was singing tonight, so well balanced, plum, dark cherry, raspberry, tea, cinnamon, cloves, still plenty of life left, will drink well for a number of more years. Paired with cast iron seared filets, two bottles left. (1235 views)
Tasted by christianminer on 8/23/2020 & rated 90 points: Drinking very smooth right now. I tried one of these 2010s several years ago, and I thought some aging would tame some of the tannins. Well, it did, the wine is very approachable, and has some tertiary flavors coming forward. I liked this wine, but just not as much as I expected. (1697 views)
Tasted by Tsliwinski on 8/19/2020 & rated 93 points: Great VA Box blend. Pencil lead, game and red fruit with tamed tannins meld so nicely. (1482 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 7/16/2020: We pulled the RdV for a virtual tasting featuring both the winemaker, Joshua Grainer, owner, Rutger de Vink, and mentor, Jim Law. I just wanted to see Jim more than anything else. Both wines were excellent, but the RdV edged out the Octagon. Nevertheless, the RdV lacked balance and begins to tire the palate. The Octagon, while good, lacks the heft and satisfaction of the RdV. Both deliver sweet cherry, graphite, and rosemary. Chocolate on the finish of both wines. No pine resin in either. The Rendezvous is Merlot and Cabernet Franc while the Octagon is Merlot centric with Cab. Franc and likely some Cab. Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. Some sediment. 14.9% alc. for the RdV as the Octagon clocks in at14.3% alc. With beef of some sort, but just don’t recall. Both wines are Highly Recommended. (288 views)
Tasted by Tsliwinski on 6/20/2020 & rated 92 points: Good VA wine. Ripe fruit with game and forest floor. Tamed tannins. Drinking smoothly now. (864 views)
Tasted by Tsliwinski on 8/25/2018 & rated 91 points: great upfront red fruit, smooth palate and silky finish (1922 views)
Tasted by SkyeWalker on 3/10/2018 & rated 91 points: Great year for intensely complex Virginia wines. Ruby on the tongue with several distinct variations in red hues. Good body with an inviting nose of raspberry and ripe cherry with hints of cocoa. Beautifully balanced with a lingering finish. (1836 views)
Tasted by darrenv on 2/11/2018 & rated 90 points: Nice. Strong caramel and leather on the nose. Not particularly fruity. Tannins fading. I'd recommend drinking this now. (1693 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 1/26/2018 & rated 91 points: Very nice Merlot based blend, dark cherry, plum, cassis, cola notes, smooth and balanced. Another nice showing, world class and no hurry to drink. (1679 views)
Tasted by Vividraconteur on 2/17/2017 & rated 98 points: Velvety and warm, bit of smoke on a dark fruit base. (2792 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 2/14/2016 & rated 90 points: Nice blend, plenty of tart fruit, menthol, soft tannins. (3015 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 12/26/2015 & rated 91 points: PNP, very nice showing, excellent balance between fruit and mineral, smooth and reasonably complex. (2501 views)
Tasted by Wallacmb on 9/19/2015 & rated 88 points: very enjoyable though maybe unidimensional with fruit notes of plum, blackberry, and cassis. Can certainly go longer given the tannin structure, though I worry about its balance as it ages. Heavy sediment. (2799 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 9/13/2015 & rated 90 points: Tasting of Virginia Wines (Keswick Vineyards and Barboursville Vineyards): Color: Dark Ruby Red
Nose: Lots of fruits on the nose, dark fruits
Palate: Cassis and fuller finish than the 09
Opinion: Would be interesting in a couple years (3032 views)
Tasted by Wallacmb on 6/20/2015 & rated 87 points: Best of the Virginia wines during a delighted tasting. Wine making seems to be knowledgable. Slightly stemmy with good berry aromatics and average body. (2126 views)
Tasted by Coachron13 on 4/23/2015 & rated 88 points: A decent Bordeaux blend, but not worth the hype or price. Fine to drink but there's no wow there. (1416 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 3/22/2015 & rated 90 points: PNP, very smooth even at this early of a stage, outstanding balance, mineral driven, classics octagon mint/cola notes, some cherry, plum and very soft tannins, its all about the balance here. (1265 views)
Tasted by vin0vin0 on 12/14/2014 & rated 90 points: Easily the best red Virginia wine we've had. There's a hint of perfume on the nose from the cab franc and a bit of blackberry. The merlot stands out on the palate with its smooth mouthfeel and fine grained tannins. There is also a nice note of crushed black cherry along with other well integrated red and black fruit. Well balanced, with medium acidity and a medium long finish. (1569 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 3/21/2014 & rated 89 points: Virginia Wines at Marcel's (Marcel's - Washington, DC): The black cherry aromas are laced with olive, smoke, earth and charcoal. Fine tannins and fresh acid on the palate, the fruit is ripe and opulent but not overdone. Black cherries and mixed berries, roses, smoke, cedar, also some black olive and dried floral notes. Long, silky, complex, another great Octagon from Barboursville. Merlot, Cab Franc, Cabernet and Petite Verdot. (2300 views)
Tasted by Mdmiller on 3/1/2014 & rated 88 points: Smooth well structured, low tannins. Decanted for 2 hours. Big alcohol (14.3) gives a hot nose. Better to hold a few years, but steep at $55. Merlot based. Alcohol masks other flavors. Needs time to show fruit & complexity (1505 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
