2016 Flying Trout Cabernet Sauvignon (USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley) 4/26/2024Big Juicy Red88

Much better than my last bottle about two years ago. Now there’s some fruit, more earthy characteristics, some soft but very present tannins and strong vanilla notes, probably from oak. The high alcohol (14.5) is definitely noticeable, but somehow mostly works. This is now in a much better place than it was a couple of years ago, so maybe it just needed more time to come together? 2019 Matias Cabernet Sauvignon (USA, California, Napa Valley) 4/26/2024Big Juicy Red

Yeech. Overextracted and terrible. Had half a glass, and poured the rest down the sink. (26 views)

2019 Domaine du Pavillon de Chavannes Côte de Brouilly Cuvée des Ambassades (France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Côte de Brouilly) 4/16/2024Big Juicy Red

My last of 6 bottles. The aromas are still lively and fresh, but the taste… the fruit is starting to fade a bit, leaving a more austere wine. I like these on the fresher side. Tanins are fully integrated, so to my taste I’d recommend drinking sooner rather than later, although that seems to go against popular opinion. (345 views)

2018 Tatomer Grüner Veltliner Meeresboden (USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County) 4/16/2024Big Juicy Red

Not sure how to rate this, but I’m finding that I just don’t like Gruner Veltliner. I love olives and brine, just not in my wine. (24 views)

2019 Thorne & Daughters Rocking Horse (South Africa, Western Cape) 4/13/2024Big Juicy Red88

A strange melange. Needs 45 minutes or so to open up. No distinct flavor notes that I could discern. Ok, but nothing special. I’ve had prior vintages of this that I much preferred. (149 views)

2016 Lingua Franca Pinot Noir Estate (USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills) 4/12/2024Big Juicy Red

Lovely nose, nice flavors (dark cherry notes, soft mossy earth, almost Burgundy-like tartness on the finish) but the intensity of both is just a little bit lacking for me. I would say it’s very good to excellent, but not fantastic.

I will note that the last glass (about 3 hours after opening) was the best, so give it plenty of air first. No signs of fruit fading though — this has a lot of life left yet. (295 views)

2021 Patricia Green Cellars Pinot Noir Weber Vineyard (USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills) 4/11/2024Big Juicy Red

Relaying a description from Full Pull:

"...Jim and Patty began working with their block of Weber fruit in 2005, and to this day the winery sources the exact same block, a 1983 block of Pommard-clone material, so 38 years old at harvest.

(from Jim): There simply aren’t many 35+ year old vineyards in Oregon. In our nearly 20 years of working with this vineyard, it has routinely produced one of our top wines of the vintage (certainly the 2012 and 2016 could make a strong argument for that being the case)… This wine has both the delicacy and fruitiness that this vintage has brought to bear in several vineyards. It is a naked wine, offering red fruits, an abundance of spice and a texture that is sublime and haunting. It is complete, age-worthy, unique all while still being a distinctly Worden Hill Rd Pinot Noir. Beautiful wine for old vine Dundee Hills vineyard fans.

(back to Full Pull): Yes indeed. The team harvested the top half of the block on September 22, followed by the bottom half three days later. This was a very small-berry year, so they entirely destemmed both lots – no whole-cluster material in the ’21. The wine was aged in French oak barrique, about 40% new, and listed alc is 13.0%. It kicks off with an expressive Dundee Hills nose: wild strawberry and pomegranate seed, forest floor undergrowth notes and lots of minerality. Just a gorgeous, deeply appetizing aromatic profile. And my goodness the palate. It’s pure and focused, suavely-textured and conveying wonderful depth and fruit impact married to a real sense of buoyancy." (409 views)

2019 Joseph Phelps Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards (USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast) 3/31/2024Big Juicy Red

Needs 3+ hours to fully open up, then flavors and alcohol are much better integrated. Before that, the 14.1 ABV was too noticeable for me. Also, the earthy notes come out to play then, leading to a fuller (although still big and on the rich side) wine. Certainly nice, but not my fave. (636 views)

2018 Domaine Chasselay Morgon Corcelette "bio" (France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon) 3/20/2024Big Juicy Red

My last of 3 bottles, and by far my favorite. Now, finally, this is drinking like a proper Morgon. Lots of complex red and blue fruit notes, something spicy, even notes of toasted wheat bread on the nose. I largely agree with @WMCCONE54’s flavor description, although 5 - 8 years left may be pushing it. But there’s a complexity to both the aromas and the taste that were missing in prior bottles. Whether that’s a matter of time and evolution or bottle variation I can’t tell, but right now, tonight, this bottle is really excellent and drinking well above its price point. (78 views)

2019 AVERÆN Pinot Noir Eola Springs Vineyard (USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills) 3/16/2024Big Juicy Red

Notes of cherry, black cherry, with some other rich underlying fruit. Unfortunately, the most noticeable aspect to me is the high alcohol (it’s 14.1%), which was immediately evident. The bite faded somewhat after an hour or so, but it’s still too “big” of a wine for my tastes. Some nice flavors, and it’s certainly enjoyable (certainly worth $30 from Garagiste back in 2022), but I wouldn’t pay much more for it. Not quite complex enough, or long enough of a finish. More of a brute force wine, rather than finesse. (259 views)

2018 Domaine Piron & Lafont / Piron-Lameloise Chénas Quartz (France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chénas) 3/13/2024Big Juicy Red

This bottle was *much* better than my last one. I no longer hate it. Dark fruit notes, with a slight richness to it. Alcohol is much better integrated. Still very slushy flavors and not much complexity, but for $18 or so it’s fine. (90 views)

2019 Rockburn Pinot Noir (New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago) 3/8/2024Big Juicy Red

No detailed tasting notes, but wine was earthy, well balanced, and delicious. Moderate (13.5%) alcohol, high acid, complex, moderate plus finish. Really quite lovely. Wish I could get more here in USA. (192 views)

2016 Carpineto Chianti Classico Riserva (Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG) 3/2/2024Big Juicy Red

I was tempted to say “Got wood?” and leave it at that, but that’s not entirely fair. For the first couple of hours there was a predominance of oak, but after a long while some fruit finally came out. What there was was dark and muted though. I’m not as thrilled by this as I used to be. Maybe it’s on the downswing? (804 views)

2015 Patricia Green Cellars Pinot Noir Weber Vineyard (USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills) 3/3/2024Big Juicy Red

No detailed tasting notes, but it was really delicious and drinking very well now. I seem to have gotten more sensitive to alcohol though, as the 14% bothered me more than it did with prior bottles (admittedly drunk several years ago). (281 views)

2018 Domaine Notre Dame des Pallières Gigondas (France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas) 3/1/2024Big Juicy Red

Sadly, I don’t like this, or at least this bottle. Initially it had a strong medicinal taste and the 15 octane mowed me over like my grandmother in a strong wind. After an hour more earthy elements began to appear and it got a bit more interesting, but it still just tasted wrong. I won’t rate it, as I’m hoping it’s an off bottle. (281 views)
