Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by NebbiY0L0 on 10/25/2020: I decanted into a medium decanter and tried a glass one hour later. At one hour it tasted great- integrated tannins, dark fruit, leather, chocolate, soy, balsamic- the little VA it had upon opening had blown off.
I had dinner and came back to it at hour 3, but sadly it was much less interesting with primarily weak secondary savory type flavors. This bottle was tasting very mature- probably past peak. I would recommend a quick 30 minute decant and then consume within 3 hours. The weak vintage really shows. (1086 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 1/13/2018 & rated 91 points: Decanted for ~8 hours and consumed over the next 3-4 hours. Uber-classic aromas of dried cherry fruit, licorice, balsamico, dried flowers and old leather. Fruit on the palate is lighter and the overall impression is a fully mature Barbaresco. Still has some fine, grippy tannin that work well, particularly with food. Even though the weight and concentration are on the lighter side, there is good intensity of flavor. Quite nice. Should hold, but no reason to wait. (1792 views)
Tasted by JWG on 11/27/2015 & rated 93 points: Very satisfying classic barbaresco! Earth and floral notes on the nose, along with some tar. Palate is leathery, acidic, with dark cherries, and still some pretty significant tannins giving a bite at the finish. Still lively, though I suspect this is around its peak, so drink up if you have any. (1870 views)
Tasted by lolo66 on 10/27/2015 flawed bottle: corked (1923 views)
Tasted by JWG on 8/27/2015 & rated 93 points: A remarkable bottle. The nose is full of fresh cut greens and grass with an underlayment of a dark leathery note. Not like a usual barbaresco. The palate is a combo of dark nebbiolo fruit and bright juicy fruit. While there is a an entire undercurrent of classic dark nebbiolo, earthy, tobacco, there is also this series of bright notes that are on top. Most unusual and delicious. (1985 views)
Tasted by northbridge on 9/14/2013 & rated 92 points: Still vigorous and worth the experience. I used half of the bottle in "Brasato al Barolo" and enjoyed the other half. Tonight we pour the Scavino Bric del Fiasc with dinner. (1999 views)
Tasted by lolo66 on 6/4/2013: very nice. many secondary notes. old world for sure. (2164 views)
Tasted by JWG on 4/1/2013 & rated 93 points: Earth and floral notes on the nose, along with a touch of tar. Palate is leathery, acidic, with dark cherries, and nicely integrated tannins. (1459 views)
Tasted by VinoKep on 11/21/2010 & rated 93 points: This is drinking great. Bright fruit, soft tannins & floral notes. (2398 views)
Tasted by yui on 1/12/2010 & rated 91 points: simialr notes to when i drank it in 06, except wasn't that tannic. very balanced this time with more truffle notes (2134 views)
Tasted by JWG on 3/22/2009 & rated 92 points: Drinking beautifully. Nose is full of dark fruit and some earth and floral notes. Palate is chewy, with dark cherries, integraded acidity, leathery, with moderate tannins. Lovely balance. (1840 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 9/17/2008: Decent, but not exciting.

Tasted by JWG on 6/17/2008 & rated 92 points: Similar to the bottle I had a 15 months ago (see those notes) -- earthy, tarry, wonderful. (1794 views)
Tasted by Mlermontov on 9/17/2007 & rated 91 points: Spanish Wines with Rob: leather and sour cherry, ripe middle, very young, chewy with lovely tannins, perfect food wine indeed. with time - brighter, carmel note on finish, herbs and sweeter fruit, richer body after a few hours...i just love wines like these. (2599 views)
Tasted by dougsmith on 9/16/2007 & rated 90 points: Some Spain in NY (Tintol, NYC): Brick red color, slightly cloudy. Bright red cherry on the nose, dusty, with a touch of saddle leather. On the palate, focused cherry fruit, zingy acidity and quite youthful. Hard to believe this is over ten years old. (2587 views)
Tasted by JWG on 9/8/2007 & rated 93 points: Even a bit better than the bottle I had in Feb 07. Now has added flavors of dark chocolate and dark cherries to the earthy slightly tarry tones. I love it. (1851 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 5/28/2007: Somewhat rough, acidic style...old school? Core of sweet, somewhat delicate fruit. Some strawberry notes, some dark notes.

Tasted by blue on 4/9/2007: i had it with risotto mushroom. Great QPR. Old style. open up over 24 hours, keep a glass for the next day if u can. Floral, red fruit cherry, balanced with acidity and tanins that started to open up. Will age. 23$! (2042 views)
Tasted by Fielding on 3/20/2007 & rated 91 points: Decanted an hour, and could have used more. Slight nose of cherries and menthol, with a hint of almost plastic which disappears. The taste is sour cherries with leather and a bit of vanilla on the finish. The fruit is more apparent an hour after decanting. (2181 views)
Tasted by Fielding on 3/2/2007 & rated 90 points: Needs a lot of time to open up. Slight nose, with a light brown hue. Taste is a restrained balance of sour cherries, tobacco, ashes. Very tart finish. Excellent wine fror pairing with food. (2127 views)
Tasted by JWG on 2/1/2007 & rated 92 points: Fabulous nose, rich with earth, tar, dark fruit -- not the floral rosy nose commonly found in good barbarescos. The taste is fairly full textured, i.e., not thin nor extremely unctuous. Quite tart, with definite tannins at the finish, but I really enjoyed the puckery quality as it went from middle to finish. A ridiculously great value at this price, given current costs of barbaresco. (2027 views)
Tasted by yui on 12/23/2006 & rated 90 points: color - brownish red, nose of cherries, earth. Solky nice acids that went well w/food. Shrooms, ashes, a bit tannic. (2229 views)

Roagna

Producer website

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
