Tasted by DStone on 3/6/2020 & rated 92 points: What a powerful yet balanced wine this is. Lots to like - black fruit on the nose and palate, a lot of fruit forwardness still 10 years after bottling. Nice tannins. Just a great wine that was popped and poured without decanting this evening. I've saved the 2nd half of the bottle in a 0.375 ml bottle and will finish it tomorrow evening. It will be interesting to see how it holds up but tonight, it's a crowd-pleaser. I forgot to mention some nice acidity which brings the fruit and tannins into balance. This is a great effort in Barbera. (810 views)
Tasted by quaffnov on 8/31/2018 & rated 92 points: Three hour decant, this is a luxurious experience, with a nose of dense blackberries and vanilla. The palate is big, with extracted dark fruit well in the lead over fine grained tannins and slightly tart acidity. A large mouthfeel with a longer finish, this is a modern statement of barbera that is well crafted. (1229 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 2/10/2018 & rated 92 points: Subsequent notes on this wine from almost two years ago. Deep, dark reddish-purple hue; basically opaque in color. Full, forward & attractive aromas of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & blueberries with overtones of floral & earthy/dusty notes, with tar & minerals, dried herbs & exotic spices, licorice, some dark cocoa & hints of oak/vanilla in the background. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, lush, ripe fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with herbs & spices, minerals, some cocoa & a hint of oak/vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing. Although it will hold onto its present plateau of development for several more years, I doubt any further development would occur from further aging. An absolutely wonderful Barbera well worth seeking out. (1267 views)
Tasted by ravikalaga on 2/10/2018 & rated 89 points: This wine is gorgeous. From a QPR, this punches atleast 3 levels above itself. Complex aromas, depth and a finish that will want you to keep having more. If you find/have some of these, collect them. (1297 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 8/13/2016 & rated 90 points: The nose was intense, yet almost confectionary, with notes of spiced cherry and medicinal herbs. On the palate, tart cherry coated the senses in silky waves along with a notes of sweet herbal tea. It finished long with a tart twang of acidity. (2207 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 4/7/2016 & rated 92 points: Subsequent notes on this beautiful Barbera. Deep, dark reddish-purple in color; opaque with no signs of aging. Forward, fragrant & attractive aromas of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & blueberries with overtones of floral & earthy/dusty notes, tar & minerals, dried herbs & exotic spices, licorice, some dark cocoa & hints of vanilla in the background. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, lush, ripe fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with herbs & spices, minerals, some cocoa & a hint of vanilla. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing. Although it has developed quite nicely, it has the balance, fruit & structure to continue aging for several more years before hitting its full peak of development. (1529 views)
Tasted by Rob Hansult on 9/20/2014 & rated 92 points: NOSE > Rich deep exotic blue, black, & purple fruit. Rose-petal, lavender, violet, creamy/sweet black-cherry with logan-berry, wine-berry & strawberry.
PALATE > Big, hugely rich, full, solid, thick-textured, & lush, almost fat, yet firm.
Black-berry, black-cherry, mulberry, lavender & violet.
Great balance. Med acidity, which shows more & more w/air.
Medium, very rich, smooth, ripe tannins. Med+ intensity.
Excellent length. Fruity/spicy, cherry-stone finish & aftertaste.
Drinking beautifully now after 3,4 hours air & will continue to age well medium term.

Tasted by defigio on 1/31/2014 & rated 92 points: Dark ruby color, opaque center, M+ viscosity. Blue and black fruit on the nose, purple flowers, organic earth and vanilla. Very round and lush on the palate, a full bodied Barbera. M+ acid, M tannin, M alc. Big but delicious. (2120 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 11/11/2013 & rated 91 points: Deep, dark reddish-purple in color; almost opaque. Fragrant & attractive aromas of still evolving, dark fruit aromas of cherries, blackberries & blueberries, earthy notes with some tar & minerals, herbs & spices, cocoa with vanilla overtones. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of youthful, rich, ripe dark fruit flavors of sweet cherries, blackberries & tart plums, herbs & spices, some cocoa and vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well with decanting and extended airing, but has the deep intense fruit and structure to develop further with additional aging. (1961 views)

Giorgio Pelissero

Producer website

Source: VinConnect (VinConnect.com)
The Pelissero family has been cultivating vineyards in Treiso, in the heart of the Barbaresco DOCG appellation, for three generations, but it was Luigi who first started bottling the estate grapes and selling the wines under the family label in 1960. Today, Luigi’s son and oenologist Giorgio runs the business, continuing to place the utmost importance on the family’s personal involvement in each step, from the vineyards and cellar to the commercialization of the wine in more than fifty countries worldwide.

The newly-expanded Pelissero winery lies on a hilltop in the area of Treiso known as Augenta, surrounded by 38 hectares (94 acres) of vineyards planted to traditional red and white grape varieties in the villages of Treiso, Neive, Barbresco and Neviglie.

Pelissero’s internationally distinguished Barbaresco wines (Vanotu, Tulin and Nubiola) are at the top of a range of traditional reds including two Dolcetto d’Alba wines, Barbera d’Alba, Nebbiolo d’Alba, Long Now (a blend of Barbera and Nebbiolo named in honor of the Long Now Foundation), Freisa and two white wines, Favorita and Moscato d’Asti.

“Years of looking Nature in the eye with respect, planning, tending to, observing, and learning that no amount of planning, care or observation is able to capture the essence, the magic. The hands of a producer are great, but the vitality of wine is greater.” – Giorgio Pelissero

Barbera

Varietal character (Appellation America)
Varietal character (Wikipedia German)
Varietal character (Wikipedia English)
Barbera is a red wine variety, originally from Italy, which is best known as the second-most important Piedmontese variety after Nebbiolo. The wines made of this grape are mainly the everyday drinking wines of the region. The main appellations producing Barbera are Asti and Alba.

Barbera - The most widely grown red wine grape of Piedmont and Southern Lombardy, most famously around the towns of Asti and Alba, and Pavia. The wines of Barbera were once simply "what you drank while waiting for the Barolo to be ready." With a new generation of wine makers, this is no longer the case. The wines are now meticulously vinified, aged Barbera gets the name "Barbera Superiore" (Superior Barbera), sometimes aged in French barrique becoming "Barbera Barricato", and intended for the international market. The wine has bright cherry fruit, a very dark color, and a food-friendly acidity.

Alba

Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Roero

Alba is a town and comune of Piedmont, Italy, in the province of Cuneo. It is considered the capital of the hilly area of Langhe, and is famous for the white truffle, peach and wine production. Piedmont is in the Northwestern region of Italy, bordering France and Switzerland. Piedmont is predominantly a plain where the water flows from the Swiss and French Alps to form the headwaters of the Po river. The major wine producing areas are in the southern portion of the region in the hills known as the "Langhe". Here the people speak a dialect that is 1/3 French and 2/3 Italian that portrays their historical roots. Their cuisine is one of the most creative and interesting in Italy. Nebbiolo is the King grape here, producing Barolo and Barbaresco. In addition, the Barbera and Dolcetto are the workhorse grapes that produce the largest quantity of wine. Piedmont is predominantly a red wine producing area. There are a few whites made in Piedmont, and the Moscato grape produces a large volume of sweet, semi-sweet and sparkling wines as well.
