Community Tasting Notes (average 93.1 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 238 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ppmm on 5/9/2024: Decanted an hour before dinner. Initially tight with the ashy character others have noted framing recalcitrant fruit, but blossoms within 30 minutes and continues to improve over two hours. The palette here is unrelentingly red to red-black, but with so many layers that you don’t miss the absence of a cooling blue. Increasingly velvety and rich with air, but never loses its focus. Delicious, and probably eternal; if you open it now, give it time. (236 views)
Tasted by Motz on 2/13/2024 & rated 98 points: Tasted over two days, alongside the same vintage Trotanoy and Léoville-Barton.

The words bouquet and perfume cannot adequately convey this wine's olfactory expressiveness. Floral and fruit notes (live, fresh, dried, and essences) linger in the background, behind root vegetables (raw, sauteed, roasted), live and dry herbs, assorted olives, tobacco (all forms), umami, smokehouse, all things savory (kelp, iodine), ash, minerals, and ores.

The wine tastes like it smells, in inflection changing waves. Bold, concentrated, and precise. Without any sense of the contrived fruitiness, heavy timber, and nasal membrane destroying alcohol that characterize the modern style. Medium plus acid and medium tannins frame the substance beautifully. Indescribable sophistication and nuance! Neither Bordeaux could match this wine's range and depth.

All elements point to another decade+ of life. Satisfying in all regards. Stupendous QPR! 97-98. (3168 views)
Tasted by BBencz on 1/6/2024 flawed bottle: Corked. (2905 views)
Tasted by happytom on 12/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Raisins and deep rosey. And deep dark berries. This is a wine of great intensity, beauty and elegance. Plum skins. Great structure with firm tannins. Great food wine. (2376 views)
Tasted by Es7e2003 on 12/25/2023 & rated 92 points: Medium ruby in glass. Medium plus intensity on the nose. Prunes, ash, menthol and violets. Medium acidity and medium plus tannins that have resolved. Good balance and close to the peak of its drinking window. If you have multiple bottles drink one now. Good food wine. (2305 views)
Tasted by dougsmith on 12/22/2023 & rated 92 points: Deep ruby color. Nose of black cherry, dusty earth, minerality. Medium bodied on the palate, great food wine. (2378 views)
Tasted by mdanyc on 11/11/2023 & rated 91 points: Menthol upon opening, fair amount of sediment. Three hours in decanter, and quite dry, mineral, red cherries and acidity. Very fresh and great with ribeye steak. (2801 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 9/13/2023 & rated 94 points: Part of a 2010 Aglianico tasting with my wine group. We had in order, the 2010 Guastaferro Taurasi Primum, the 2010 Feudi di San Gregorio Irpinia Serpico , the 2010 Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi Piano di Montevergine, and the 2010 Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro. All were opened, but not decanted for at least 45 minutes before pouring. Despite being the last wine of the night, and our having some palate fatigue, this was the group (not unamousily) favorite of the night. Maybe because its a blend, but it was also the only one that I considered drinkable without food. I've had many vintages of this wine, and the 2010 may be my favorite. That or the 2012. (3344 views)
Tasted by hkbob on 9/3/2023 & rated 94 points: Another excellent bottle of this almost faux-left bank wine. Aromatics of mostly red berries, garrigue, smoke and minerals. Predominant dark cherry and loamy earth on the palate. Excellent energy, lift and balance. So enjoyable. (3251 views)
Tasted by hkbob on 8/7/2023 & rated 94 points: Medium garnet. Could almost be mistaken for a Cab Sav-based Bordeaux. Boysenberry, garrigue, smoke and minerals. Predominant dark cherry and earth on the palate. Energetic with excellent balance. A fantastic wine with lots of life left. (3379 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 7/25/2023 & rated 94 points: A very dark colour, black; intense dark cherry and blackberry fruit, with a distinct smoky element (volcanic soil perhaps?), great depth and length. Not overly tannic, but with fresh acidity. Excellent wine which should keep for 10+ years. (3483 views)
Tasted by winoma on 6/12/2023 & rated 93 points: Wonderful bottle at a great drinking window (4121 views)
Tasted by rmcbrayer on 6/9/2023 & rated 94 points: I concur with recent TNs here about this wine's balance and acidity. A clear step up from the surrounding vintages of TdL I have had. Really good. (3475 views)
Tasted by brianschool on 3/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Brilliant menthol and anise nose. On the palate, rich, balanced fruit, with cedar, pine, florals, anise, and savory dark cherry. Wonderful complexity, precision, density, and a very beautiful wine. (3967 views)
Tasted by KPB on 2/25/2023: Sold to Yagil (4011 views)
Tasted by Bluth on 10/7/2022 & rated 90 points: Good for now, and should be great after few more years of cellaring. Awakened after 2+ days corked in cellar. Great concentraion and complexity. Full body with black cherries, mushrooms, forest and some spices. (4125 views)
Tasted by hkbob on 7/25/2022 & rated 94 points: Medium garnet coloured. This shows quite young, with a distinctive minerally nose overlaying cassis, elder berries, smoke and Mediterranean herbs. Rich and pliant on the savoury, dark cherry, earthy palate with a bead of fine acidity providing lift and a harmonious finish. Excellent complexity and an interesting study in these varietals. I really enjoyed and suspect it will show even better with a good food pairing. (5333 views)
Tasted by SeaWine on 6/13/2022: Wild, wild, original stuff. I enjoyed it, but I don't know that I would drink it all that frequently, even if I had the bottles to do so. It's more one of those wines I'd enjoy every few years.

Definitely has several layers of depth and complexity. For me, on day one it had a strong cedar-tinged smoke aspect with a tiny touch of ash. If this had come from certain parts of CA in 2020, I'd suspect smoke taint, but here it is a feature, not a defect. The smoke aspects decreased on the second day to make it more of an interest for me vs. a distraction. Thus far, it still has fruit to balance everything else going on.

This is 12 years post vintage already, so it will be interesting to see where this goes. I've heard/read some folks say this wine is "never quite ready", so I look forward to trying it over the next 5-20 years or so, should I be so fortunate. (5133 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 5/13/2022 & rated 97 points: Excellent showing again. This needs a little while to open up in the glass aromatically. Deep and layered, with notes of sweet and sour red berries, graphite, smoke, volcanic minerality, savory herbs, ash, some spices, also some cedar wood and cigar box. It‘s pretty full-bodied, dense and powerful, but with amazing freshness, high acidity and medium-high tannin that is very good quality and adding structure and grip. Long finish with plenty of complexity. A superb Terra di Lavoro that has been stunning since my very first bottle. This has still another 10 - 15 years ahead at least. (5314 views)
Tasted by DrZett on 4/29/2022 & rated 93 points: Lots of beautiful dark berries, tannins are grippy but nicely integrated. Very good balance. Long and savory finish. Drink now until 2028. (IG) (4031 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 4/25/2022: Nose - earthy, olive, somewhat gamey, coming across Syrah like
Mouth - drinks delicious, dark fruits, fig, cocoa, still loads of tannins but good cushioning acidity. I suspect this is just now entering its drinking window, it’s criminal that I already blew through my stash. Drink or hold (5121 views)
Tasted by DFBW on 3/22/2022 & rated 91 points: Drunk over time from Coravin and then last two glasses from the bottle. Full, deep, rich and dark fruit. Very tasty wine. Not the most complex but tasty. Plenty of life left in the wine and may introduce more nuance over time. (4367 views)
Tasted by David Paris (dbp) on 3/1/2022 & rated 91 points: This is a lot tighter and more structured than the 2008 poured alongside it. From the very first whiff, it's almost all structure on the nose... sure there's some volcanic ash and berries present here, but it's way more muted. It's like you're hitting an ice ax against a volcanic rock, whereas the 2008 was pure volcanic ash. So anyway, point is, you smell this wine and think, "uh oh, this isn't going to be ready." The palate still has a lot of fruit showing, though, on a medium to full bodied, luscious, creamy soft texture. Pretty nice fruit present on the palate. The finish then of course dials up with a lot more tannins and acid that takes over the senses for a little bit, with some spicey herbs present as well. Certainly still elegance and class throughout, but it feels at least 5 years too young to be drinking these. Still feels very robust, compact and structured, and I think this can be a great Galardi, but it has not yet begun to unfurl. This may only be 91 now, but there's a big + there due its compactness, with much more elevation in that enjoyment to come as it begins to mature. (2801 views)
Tasted by Fugu Me on 11/13/2021: More open on the nose on PnP than prior bottle a year ago, but still pretty tight on the palate. Definitely continued to open over the course of a few hours, with the best glass being the last. Hopefully I can keep my hands off of the remaining 2 bottles I have for a few years, as they can use it. (5068 views)
Tasted by StefanAkiko on 9/25/2021 & rated 91 points: Underwhelming after plop, but grew nicely during the course of the evening.
Elevage not properly integrated in this bottle, but fruit, acidity and tannins are there for the long haul.
Very curious about where this wine will go in the future.

Happily enjoying five more in the cellar and no hurry at all. (5285 views)

Fattoria Galardi

This winery is run by an enthusiastic group of dedicated cousins, Maria Luisa Murena, Arturo and Dora Celentano, and Francesco Catello.
The estate is firmly committed to making wine of the highest quality and has reaffirmed this commitment by hiring the distinguished oenologist, Riccardo Cotarella
who shares their philosophy. Together they strive to maximize the intrinsic characteristics of the native grapes Aglianico and Piedirosso through attentive and careful vineyard management.
The winery and surrounding hillside vineyards are located at approximately 1,300 feet above sea level and benefit of ideal growing conditions, such as climate and exposure.
The name of their praised icon wine Terra di Lavoro or “Land of Work” in Italian, reflects the soil composition in the area which is extremely rocky, thus difficult to cultivate.
Yields and overall volume are very low; only a few thousand bottles are produced each year although the winery will have almost 30 acres under production in the future.
The owners and Cotarella decided to focus on the native varietals Aglianico and Piedirosso.

Aglianico

Varietal character (Appellation America)

The Southern Italy Outpost (on the CellartTracker Forum)

Originally from Greece and an early Roman favorite, Aglianico was planted as early as the seventh century B.C. Infused with interesting aromas of plums, raisins and licorice. Dried floral notes flow easily into the medium to full-bodied palate of black pepper, smooth, subtle cherry, and plum flavors.. A stylish, intriguing young red, with fine tannins and a ripe balanced finish.
