Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 73 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bobbylion on 1/15/2024 & rated 91 points: Don’t feel this is over the hill. Nice acidity to keep this going for a few years more. Well/ integrated and balanced. Not heavy inspite of 14,5% alcohol. No longer my style wine, but once in a while, why not? (332 views)
Tasted by Skotto on 2/13/2023: Pretty clear from the other tasting notes, this wine is past its best showing. That said, there’s still plenty to enjoy here. (712 views)
Tasted by norsktorsk on 9/24/2022 & rated 92 points: typical CDP (794 views)
Tasted by europat55 on 12/21/2021 & rated 91 points: 1998-2007 Roger Sabon Chateauneuf du Pape (blind tasting) (Virtual Tasting): Nose: 91-92; Palate: 91
My #2, Group's #4 (67 pts). Tasted blind. (1304 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 9/18/2021 & rated 91 points: A touch of oxidation made this wine less compelling than the 4/5/21 bottle. (1169 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 4/5/2021 & rated 92 points: Similar to the 8/31/20 bottle. (1293 views)
Tasted by finewinebuff57 on 3/15/2021 & rated 91 points: An interesting comparison to the 2004 Two Hands Aerope Grenache (see separate note). Both 15% alcohol and similar prices, but for me this is a much better wine. 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% 'Divers'. And old vines of course. I really think those other varieties help to tame the sweetness of high alcohol Grenache. (1135 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 11/24/2020 & rated 92 points: Similar to the 8/31/20 bottle. (1050 views)
Tasted by Girardian on 10/16/2020 & rated 91 points: Drink up. Three years ago this was a 94 pointer for me - now it’s flat by comparison. Same profile but lost its grip. I have had this wine several times over the past 5 years and wish I’d consumed by 2019. Still enjoyable but soft, chalky on the finish, with fruit muddled compared to a few years ago. Slight stewed fruit profile. (815 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 8/31/2020 & rated 92 points: Medium purple/red color. Aromas of black berries, kirsch, cola and a touch of smoke. Ripe, medium-bodied fruit in the mouth with very good depth and length and well-integrated oak and tannins. Juicy and supple on the palate. Still very fresh at 14 years of age. (790 views)
Tasted by SeattlePaul on 7/2/2019 flawed bottle: Had Brett, surprisingly. The second bottle which had some wine bypassed all the way to the capsule was actually in much better shape. (1249 views)
Tasted by CHINACAT on 6/8/2018 & rated 93 points: Another nice showing. Ripe, rich and balanced, with some earth and spice. Has enough structure to stay in a good place for several more years. (1960 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 5/4/2018 & rated 91 points: At room temp this was a little hot and syrupy. Pulled together when cooled. Fruit was on the larger scaled, dark side. A little sandalwood and cedar spice. Moderate finish. Chalky texture on finish. Probably a touch past peak for me. Just a touch overdone, but still quite enjoyable. (2099 views)
Tasted by tekygeek on 4/7/2018 & rated 95 points: Textbook perfect. Enjoy now. (1952 views)
Tasted by JGinMO on 3/14/2018 & rated 92 points: This was quite good, very mature, I actually got some Cornas style after an hour, blood and raw meats. Nice complexity. (1891 views)
Tasted by CHINACAT on 1/19/2018 & rated 92 points: Purple color with a restrained bouquet. Still quite concentrated, with plenty of dark fruit, some chalk and vanilla, unobtrusive tannins and good acidity. Might still be a couple of years from peak, but very good now. (1565 views)
Tasted by Doc90 on 11/10/2017 & rated 90 points: Big nose with garrigue, beef jerky, and plums. Full bodied, luscious, and fresh. Plum palate with herbal nuances. The 15% alcohol is apparent on the finish, and detracts from it. Kind of a letdown, but still a solid wine. (1226 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/27/2017 & rated 88 points: Very dark red color. PNP, drank glasses over 2 hours and again on day three. This was kind of big and brooding the first day. The nose showed black fruits, liqueurish on the palate. It didn't really feel like CDP at that point. 48hrs later it was clearly characteristic of CDP, but it was darker fruited, herbaceous, peppery and had a baked fruit quality that did nothing for me. It's fine, but stylistically big and just uninteresting. Not sure that time will improve this. If I had more I'd consider drinking over the short term. (1417 views)
Tasted by norsktorsk on 9/23/2017 & rated 91 points: Will grilled fresh black cod. Everyone like it. (1290 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 2/17/2017 & rated 91 points: This is pretty plush for a CdP. Smells of garrigue. You can tell this has more Syrah (15%) and Mourvèdre (10%) plus 15% of Vaccarese, Cinsault, Terret Noir, Counoise and Muscardin in it than most CdPs (60% Grenache). Fruit profile is more blue fruits and plum rather than cherry. Some garrigue as well. To me this is well made, but kind of boring. This doesn't scream CdP to me. Better with air, but I won't seek this out. I much prefer the stronger Grenache plus garrigue profile. (2216 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 1/7/2017 & rated 91 points: Deep dark color. Concentrated dark berries, black currant, liqurice. medium finish. Very good balance. Very pleasant. (2193 views)
Tasted by Quaffing in Colorado on 12/25/2016 & rated 93 points: No reason to pile much more onto what's already been mentioned in previous reviews. ROCKNROLLER's tasting notes are spot-on. The complexities of ten years of aging are noticeable in this silky, voluptuous and well balanced offering. This is in a great drinking right now and is thoroughly enjoyable. Sad to see the last of three bottles go, but am happy to have other vintages in the cellar. (4869 views)
Tasted by awitz78 on 9/18/2016 & rated 90 points: paired well with heavy Italian dinner, bolognese, etc. better after 30 min (2479 views)
Tasted by swapdoc on 7/18/2016: Did not taste the traditional Southern bouquet here. More of a generic, polished red, with some plum overtones. Hoped for more pronounced aromas of lavender, earth, olive -- found none of it here. Perhaps still aromatically closed and needs more time in the bottle. A bottle of '09 San Polo brunello opened immediately after offered a remarkably more enjoyable fruit and texture. (2807 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 4/5/2015 & rated 92 points: Very dark red/purple color with a garnet hue. Decanted for 2 hours and drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. This was drinking well with the air. The nose had a fresh herb de Provence aroma with some lavender and roasted meat along with the blackberry and black raspberry fruit. The palate was nicely balanced with full body, layered fruits of blackberry, black raspberry and kirsch along with pepper, spice, sauvage, and nice silky tannins with a medium plus finish. Very good. Roger Sabon

Producer website - Read more about Roger Sabon

The Sabon family has a long history in Chateauneuf du Pape. Quote from the homepage of the domain: "One of the oldest documented landholders in Chateauneuf du Pape, the Sabon family has controlled vineyards in the zone since 1540".
Roger Sabon is the father of the three brothers who run the domain today Jean-Jacques, Denis and Gilbert Sabon.
The vinification is since 2001 in the care of Didier Négron, son-in-law of Jean- Jacques Sabon.
Denis and his son Julien take care of the fields. Delphine, daughter of Denis is often in the reception.

Today the property has 15 ha. in AOC Chateauneuf du Pape and owns 17 ha. of vineyards in Roquemaure from where Lirac and Cotes du Rhone are made.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
