Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.1 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 99 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Luckey on 4/19/2024 & rated 95 points: Fresh with plenty of acid. Almost smokey nose when first opened that dissipated within 15 minutes. After breathing, mouth/nose combined for that salty popcorn experience with extra minerality. One of the best white burgundies we've had in a while. Bring this to the [good] friend who "hates" California chardonnay. Drinking great now, but probably continues to evolve another 5-10 years. (152 views)
Tasted by BradE on 3/10/2024: I haven't had this vintage for quite a while. This was very, very good. Better than the 04 Leflaive Chevalier next to it. (310 views)
Tasted by shifter on 3/9/2024: Grand Cru White Burgundy Fest: Really good and fresh. Another 04 that was surprisingly young. Clearly one of their best wines, some said better than the Chevy by its side. (366 views)
Tasted by GuanYu on 7/21/2023 flawed bottle: Blind tasting. Pale yellow color. Citrus, hazelnut, brioche. Gluey texture. Fresh with good palate tension. Unfortunately, wine was flawed due to oxidized finish (very short finish). (681 views)
Tasted by vetty on 2/10/2023 & rated 93 points: Sesame and orange fruit aroma. Long finish. High acidity. tastes younger than 04…… concentrated in the front of the mouth (969 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 2/10/2023 & rated 92 points: Two hours breathing prior to dinner. In good condition but quite light/flat. Only ever so slightly sesame and Leflaive-like. Good white fruit. Is this a problem of provenance? 92 (1144 views)
Tasted by sjwshiraz on 9/11/2022: an extraordinarily good bottle. grand cru weight, no signs of oxidation, wonderful length . no hurry to drink (1409 views)
Tasted by _water.into.wine_ on 9/11/2022 & rated 94 points: This is why Leflaive is considered one of the greatest wine makers. The size of Montrachet, the richness of Meursault, the flint and stones of the best plots of burgundy. Quite a deep, golden hue, you may think 90s burgundy if you didn't smell or taste. The nose is dominated by flint and burnt match. With time, this evolves to butter and popcorn. I thought some cheese, others weren't so sure. A remarkable wine from a generally unheralded vintage. It shows that the best will perform year in, year out. From SJW (1270 views)
Tasted by Throughthegrapevine on 9/7/2022 & rated 94 points: Outstanding at age 18. Very fresh, butterscotch, Key lime (pie), a whiff of smoke, Pucelles at its best! Mouth watering (1006 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 7/19/2022 flawed bottle: Oxidized. What a bummer. (998 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 6/30/2022 & rated 94 points: Indeed the best example 04 Pucelles I had. Explosive sesame sensation, hazelnut, gunflint and yellow fruit. Palate is rich and vibrant with dazzling acidity. As good as what Leflaive can be. (1328 views)
Tasted by RobinTeo on 4/26/2022 & rated 95 points: The one we tried to beat the "Monty" (Kolabo): "Beat the 2004 Drouhin Montrachet"

Reduction and match stick flint, green apples, popcorn, white flowers and white sesame. Palate showed layers upon layers of peaches, white pepper, cream, white flowers with nice minerality, lifting acidity and long finish. I really enjoyed the tension along with the density and balanced structure for this one! (671 views)
Tasted by finediningnyc on 3/18/2022 & rated 95 points: Perhaps the last great vintage of the Pierre Morey era, 2004 shows its expected reduction but with so much more to offer. After a short time in the decanter it sings flaunting a floral freshness, signature Leflaive sesame, lemon curd, honeysuckle and smoky minerals. The palate has amazing tension and purity with piercing citrusy acids and an incredibly persistent finish. When great White Burgundy with some age is on there’s really nothing like it. Totally in the zone! (1032 views)
Tasted by Satoshi Nakamoto on 2/5/2022 & rated 95 points: NFT Night at Girl & the Goat: Loved the color on this. Some reduction initially, but resolved fairly quickly. Rich notes of orchard fruit, fresh minerals, buttered popcorn, and a hint of lemon curd. Loved the texture on this. A privilege to drink. Thank you for this lovely bottle, Ryan! (1350 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 8/11/2021 & rated 93 points: Served single blind next to Comte Lafon Charmes 96. The Leflaive was at a similar (high) level. A reconditioned bottle it showed some reduction from the additional sulphur during reconditioning. Underlying a very nice taut and mature white Burgundy with lovely amplitude but not prematurely advanced in any way, a bottle in perfect condition as it should be but not always is with Leflaive even for the reconditioned wines (redeeming a very disappointing reconditioned 04 Chevalier had around a year back). (1893 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 7/24/2021 & rated 96 points: Wow this was great! So fresh, I would have probably guessed 17 or 18’ if this was served blind, no signs of age at all. Very nice acidity and quite a pretty nose. Pedigree shows here for sure, great wine. (1876 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 4/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Signature leflaive sensation of sesame, flint, gun-powder and citrus fruit. Great precision and balance on the palate where the fruit and laser-focused acidity merge seamlessly. Consistently good. (2137 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 4/3/2021 & rated 93 points: Bright, fresh, clean. Cut from the same cloth as the '04 Chevalier in the next glass, a gear less powerful and less aromatically striking, but has that same faint smoke and sulphur above mineral rich and bright yellow fruit. When these wines are clean they are just terrific. 93 - 94. (2003 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 9/24/2020: This had a reductive note that I found appealing but most weren’t digging. This bottle is definitely on the downslope so if its sounds, I’d drink sooner than later. (2054 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/24/2020: Fun with Pucelles and Amoureuses (Hughes House - Chicago IL): Started out very reductive, and while I found that matchsticky character softening with aeration, it never fully went away, and only moderate fruit and evolved flavors and aromas came in behind it. An odd bottle. (2508 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 8/27/2020 & rated 93 points: It has been more than 4 years since I had this. Opulent nose with honeysuckle, white sesame, ripe yellow fruit, hazelnut and herbs. Palate was very powerful but also elegant. Showing lots of weight, depth and complexity. Drinking in its early maturity. Lovely. (1885 views)
Tasted by Mrbuzz on 6/19/2020 & rated 97 points: Leflaive LOVES me...I've had nothing but good bottles, except that 07 Meursault yuk, and my luck continues! Almost 7yrs to the day since I last had this wine...starts out with a good dose of protective reduction...wonderful match strike, butter sautéed peaches, fresh squeeze lemon over dried honey, mint, chalk dust nose. All FRESH...no signs of apple juice...and the reduction melds in nicely. Nose translated to the palate...the fruit is pitted orchard...little waxy...nice creamy GC like weight, slight hollow mid. Ample citrus acidity livens...shows spicy honey and smoked white pepper...pretty white flower and peach tree blossom florals...very saline with that wonderful limestone chalk, hazelnuts, and crushed minerals...finishes long and lingering with that honey, smoked white pepper, and barrel spice...wafting subtle reduction and citrus sour...you beg for another sip! This is why we do it! Amazing! (1930 views)
Tasted by drjb on 5/16/2020 flawed bottle: Another Leflaive disgrace. Both oxidized and irreversibly flawed by excess sulfur. Bronze colour, rubberised nose with burnt apple and caramel. (1570 views)
Tasted by sylviap on 3/12/2020: Not as vibrant as expected. Agree with previous comment that it was prematurely aged. Drink now. (1306 views)
Tasted by dhdornan on 3/7/2020: Salty (1263 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
