Tasted by vinomex on 10/25/2023 & rated 92 points: Held up very well after 19 years. Very enjoyable. (88 views)
Tasted by mulder on 5/18/2023 flawed bottle: Bought from Louis Kapcsandy Jr at Redmond Fine Wines. Unfortunately opened and it was corked. (674 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 7/14/2021 & rated 94 points: 30 minute slow ox. Black currant, Christmas cake, mocha, licorice, tobacco weed come through. The wine is mature, layered, with well integrated tannins. Relatively open knit today it doesn’t show any heat or excess alcohol. Long satisfying palate staining finish. (1871 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 5/2/2021 & rated 93 points: Dark purple-garnet. Confectionary strawberry and raspberry and powdered sugar on the nose; there is also an almond pastry note. Port-like sweet fruit with plenty of strawberry and some of the aforementioned almond pastry notes. Delicious but it is a bit more dessert-like than I would prefer . (1698 views)
Tasted by Joealex on 12/13/2020 & rated 95 points: Restained and complex nose of cherry & cassis liquer, minerals. lead pencil.
Albeit very good concentration wine is light on its feet, medium body, full integration of tannins, acidity and cherry sweetness. Freshenss and vibrancy, long dry aftertaste.
Even experienced taster can be fooled as this smells and tastes as benchmark Bordeaux ( St. Julien or Graves?) from great vintage. Completely different style than typical cabernets from Napa. Anyway outstanding/great wine, my first wine made by Helen Turley. (2095 views)
Tasted by tbabes on 2/8/2020 & rated 96 points: Opened about an hour before dinner; no decant. A youthful purple core, turning towards garnet at the rim. Notes of currants, blackberry, plum, roasted fennel and black truffle; a hint of cigar box. Medium bodied, with a velvety texture, great concentration; good grip and depth on the long finish. Seems to be fully mature; an impressive Napa Cabernet! (2738 views)
Tasted by markcic on 12/24/2019 & rated 95 points: From a magnum opened and slow ox'd for 6 hours then decanted through a vinturi and we let sit for another two hours while the group drank chablis and red burgundy but this wine was the highlight of our Xmas eve feast. The nose was dark fruit and mocha. The palate was dark berries, licorice, hints of tobacco and earh flavors. The finish was long and smooth. Just a beautiful bottle of wine. (2467 views)
Tasted by tbabes on 9/10/2019 & rated 98 points: The fill was into the neck and the cork was sound; opened, but did not decant, about 2 hours before dinner. Lovely and outgoing bouquet, offering complex and intoxicating aromas of cassis, black truffle, aged tobacco, hints of fennel and black cherry. Medium bodied, with a velvety texture, incredible depth, and a sense of vibrancy on the long and complex finish. (1781 views)
Tasted by Chrisinroch on 9/7/2019: bought direct, passive cellared since then

Decanted, but it really didn't need it except for a bit of sediment. Delicious; not shy but still very elegant. (1852 views)
Tasted by Gnieboer on 3/24/2019 & rated 95 points: Delicious. Drink now. An elegant wine, tobacco, bit of chocolate, and blackberry weaving together. Needed only the briefest decant to open up. (1908 views)
Tasted by mflesh on 3/23/2019 & rated 95 points: This wine is starting to show a little bit of age I believe. Immediately from cork pop, this wine had sort of an interesting muted nose. Took about 20 minutes to wake up as the middle of this wine was initially quite flat. After if woke up, it was blackberry, truffle, tobacco on the nose which carried over to the palate. The middle of this wine and actually kind of thinned out a little bit, this playing black cherry, black tea. Tobacco note comes back in to the heavier weighted blackberry finish. Very well done! Haven't had too many of these State Lane cabernets from Kapcsandy but the style resembles the old Beringer State Lane quite remarkably. I don't think these are really going to improve much more in the bottle, so if you are lucky enough to have a few of these laying around, it is time to start coming up with a drinking plan!  Tasted by Kevnzworld on 3/16/2019 & rated 94 points: My second bottle was better than the first last month. Better balance, better fruit, less heat.
This wine had a short :30 minute decant. (1344 views)
Tasted by Kevnzworld on 2/17/2019 & rated 93 points: 45 minute decant
Pleasant nose of dark berries and plum
Nice elements of cedar, and tart cherry, tobacco but with some heat and tannin that leaves a nice wine but one that’s slightly out of balance.
This goes well ( better ) with food, tonight dinner at El Dorado Sonoma.
At hour two the heat mellowed somewhat and the darker fruits emerged, nice. (1309 views)
Tasted by skurtz on 5/17/2018 & rated 94 points: Decanted for CA Cult night at Garth’s. This was my first red of the evening and for that reason one of the most memorable. Softer and more aromatic that the bevy of heavy cultish reds that followed. Great complexity. Loved it with grilled venison and duck appetizers. (2138 views)
Tasted by Deepdrop on 10/22/2017 & rated 92 points: I opened this too soon. Nice layers of complexity that just were not fully coming together yet.I expect upside to this wine after several more years (2136 views)
Tasted by grafighter on 6/23/2017 & rated 93 points: Slight Napa funkiness upon opening. Uncorked and aired for 3 hours. Nose never developed like the last bottle as I remembered. Though, it gained weight as dinner progressed. Dinner had lots of salted and garlic meat that might have subtracted a notch off this wine. Note to self, don't bring known great wines to churrasco restaurants. (2381 views)
Tasted by Topper on 1/15/2017 & rated 94 points: I found this to be a very well-made wine with a good variety of flavors - Not quite a bordeaux style, but the blending tamed the cab notes and makes a more full and interesting wine than some of the Cal Cab cult monoliths. This is drinking right today and, somewhat surprisingly, was not as good the second day, making me think that the right time to drink this is now. (2969 views)
Tasted by capacious on 8/3/2016 & rated 93 points: Really nice fruit, on the sweet side, cassis, cherry, blueberry, lengthy compelling finish. Good contribution from the barrel. Still youthful and that's good. (3404 views)
Tasted by parkerbj on 3/23/2016 & rated 97 points: This was an absolutely stunning wine. In a week that featured '95 Mouton, '09 Le Meal, '08 The Line Grenache, '09 This is Not an Exit Syrah, and '01 Lokoya Howell Mtn, this guy was up there near the top of the list. Decanted this magnum for 2-3 hours. Exhibited superbly smooth tannins and a long, pleasant finish. Classic Bordeaux nose and taste for this wonderful California blend. Drink it now if you've got it because it's right in it's sweet spot though it likely has several more years left. (3260 views)
Tasted by lebo9968@gmail.com on 12/17/2015 & rated 94 points: Mouthfeel. Balance. Delicious. Casis, leather, tobacco, lead pencil, cedar, plum, BlackBerry, chocolate, coffee, dark berries. Very yummy. (2975 views)
Tasted by wcchang on 11/30/2015 & rated 97 points: This wine tastes great. It's still young though and should be even better later. It's very enjoyable right after opened. Hints of lead pencil integrates well with typical California dark berries, with traces of spices. It maintained its peak till 3.5 hours and then slightly down from there. Secondary flavors should develope more after a few years. This wine has a great potential of delveloping an even greater balance between Bordeaux style and Cal Cab
traits later. I will keep my other bottles for at least another 5 years. (2801 views)
Tasted by vinomex on 4/1/2015 & rated 95 points: I had high expections on this wine and my expections were not only met but exceeded. Decanted for about 30 mins and drank over 2 hours. Elegant and delightful. A very refined wine with lots of life ahead that is drinking extremely well at this point. Room filling bouquet. Youthful with nuances beginning to emerge. Fills your mouth with flavor of fruit, some tar, tobacco and the slightest hint of oak while all along it remains elegant, balanced and refined. No hard edges, no heat. Glad I have one more bottle left. (3313 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 12/25/2014 & rated 93 points: Brief note from memory. Impressive wine. Exceptionally balanced and elegant. Fruit is still youthful as secondary notes of earth and tobacco start to integrate. Suave but still present tannin. Seems to have a long life (10+ years) ahead. (3023 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 9/8/2014 & rated 93 points: No decant. (3322 views)
Tasted by mulder on 5/24/2014 & rated 94 points: Great Napa cab. Beautiful nose of cassis, plums, licorice, pencil lead and earthiness. Palate consists of dark fruit and cherries with lively acidity and tannins. Great wine. (3528 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
