Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by la turque on 5/28/2015 & rated 93 points: Bright straw colour. Soft on the nose. Lovely aromas of jasmine, white petals, yellow citrus. On the palate, focused sweetness and a beautiful roundness that one doesn't often experience except in blends that look beyond the core of the three main grape varieties. This has verve and structure and sweetness and acidity. Drink over the next 5 years. (4556 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 12/26/2014 & rated 90 points: The Wine Nerds do Christmas Dinner (Dave' Place - Kitchener, ON Canada): Popped and poured. Followed over 20 minutes. A bit of an odd musty, decaying organic matter note is central to the nose. Also, fresh mushroom, candied lemon peel, underripe pineapple, slightly bruised apple and pastry notes. There is quite a bit of ripe fruit and touches of maturity starting to show. Palate has quite low dosage which feels like 5 or 6 grams of RS with very high biting acid which was almost a bit too much for me. A touch bitter on the finish as well. I like my champagne mature so I might appreciate this more in a few years. (5470 views)
Tasted by alittle on 12/26/2014 & rated 91 points: Light gold in colour, with a moderate bead that dissipates rather quickly. On the nose, honey, lemon peel, tangerine, grated ginger, decaying red apple, toast, spice, and hint of mushroom, caramel and a touch of garbage juice. On the palate, this is round with moderate dosage (reportedly 12 g/L), medium plus acidity. The finish is relatively long, with tastes of lemon zest, mineral, baked apple, salted caramel, grapefruit, spice and yeast. This bottle seemed a touch advanced for its age, but if representative, I wouldn't age this for too long. (4786 views)
Tasted by Dave Canada on 12/19/2014 & rated 93 points: Really fine mousse...
Nose is really pure....candied ginger, lemon, biscuit, mineral, white flowers and honey.
Palate is really lush but balances this well with mineral, lemon and lime flavours that are augmented by white peach, spice, honey, ginger and green apple. Velvety texture...drinking so well now but I would love to see where this goes.
Finish is long, round and quite complex. Very fine. (4845 views)
Tasted by Beaunedoc on 9/1/2014 & rated 94 points: A delightful bottle! Mine disgorged July 2013. Apple and apple pastry (baked pastry with brown spices) were the predominant palatal elements. Floral elements noted by all three tasters were light and ephemeral, notably on the finish. One found the finish short, but another found the finish very mineral in nature, very much like tonic water. A fine acidity aided the wine, very clean and etched. Medium weight but heavy extract and intensity. This bottle was chilled for 2 hours only. That was plenty, more would only numb this wine. The bottle was unique and delicious and worth the tariff.  Tasted by Squire on 5/25/2014 & rated 90 points: We very much liked this delicious champagne. HowardNZ's comment is worth repeating, "Moutard explained that the Champagne is unusual in using six of the permitted varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Petit Meslier and Arbanne." The champagne is both extraordinary and quite palatable. Enjoy! (1329 views)
Tasted by Yme on 5/25/2014: Did someone change the recipe? I was looking forward to this after tasting it over a year ago. Darkish lemon gold. Honey, baked apples, bread and oak on the nose. Had difficulty discerning the flavour characteristics (lemon, baked apples) on the palate as there was a huge hit of oak that overpowered everything else. Only one bottle was bought to the tasting so unsure if this was due to bottle variation. For our taste, it would be a shame if the style has changed to a very heavy oak influenced way. (1504 views)
Tasted by HowardNZ on 5/19/2014 & rated 92 points: Dinner at Mike and Cathy's place (Wellington, New Zealand): Colour deep gold, a real contrast with the NV. Also, more persistent mousse than the NV. A contrast on bouquet too. A rich, mealy, complex nose showing some autolysis character with notes of yellow peach, nectarine and a savoury element. In the mouth, this Champagne is much more about structure than the first two, with good dry extract and power. Rich, complex and seemingly with some age (everyone was picking this as older, 2002 and or from the 1990s), but still focused with balanced acids. Flavours of pineapple, mandarins and marmalade, with a zesty, dry finish. Would be interesting to cellar. M. Moutard explained that the Champagne is unusual in using six of the permitted varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Petit Meslier and Arbanne. (1824 views)
Tasted by Winetex on 3/17/2014 & rated 87 points: Yeast bread aromas with fruity peach, pear flavors and a mineral finish. As noted by the tasting leader "a curiousity" Prestige Champagne Tasting, Ay, France. (1360 views)
Tasted by Papies on 3/16/2014 & rated 90 points: Felt better than when we had this 3 months ago, which leads us to belive ageing this a few years more will only help. Felt rounder and richer than before. Good wine, good story behind it too. 90ish (1199 views)
Tasted by AV2012 on 11/22/2013: Soupy bouquet of bread and burnt raisin. Quite intense on the palate, finish is sweet. Nothing special about it. (376 views)
Tasted by Papies on 11/17/2013 & rated 89 points: A good champagne but to be honest not very memorable. We haev had a few vontages of it, consistently thinking the same. Well round and smooth, citrus notes predominantly. 89 and easy to drink from now. (1217 views)

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
