Community Tasting Notes (average 93.7 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 79 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by rwpalmer on 12/27/2023 & rated 92 points: Pretty purple with a hint of browning. Not the deepest colour. Very lifted and pure nose---floral, red-fruited. Just medium weight on the palate. Moreish. Just not the most weighty, complex or possibly long-lived but it has so balance so I could well be proven wrong. (Only a middling length cork.) (1331 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 11/26/2023 & rated 95 points: Black.
Huge nose, rich dark spicy fragrance.
Deeply intense, seamless, dark fruits, licorice, plums, tar spice, delicious. (1511 views)
Tasted by TheoIV on 9/21/2023 & rated 96 points: A very yummy vintage port. Beautiful nose. Dark ruby/black color. The whole milk weight on your tongue makes anticipation almost unbearable. Flavors of chocolate, leather, black currant and rose pedal.. An elegant balanced port. Lovely. It went great with dark chocolate and a Portuguese Nada (egg tart). (1780 views)
Tasted by TheoIV on 7/4/2023 & rated 94 points: Rich blackberry and earth on the nose. Palate: smooth plum and blackberry with a hint of fig. Surprisingly acidic on the tip of the tongue. Lovely port. Shared for at a 4th of July celebration with friends. (2159 views)
Tasted by FransS on 12/4/2022 & rated 89 points: Winefield's auction pre-sale tasting: A hint of cherries and currants, very sweet, riper than I expexted; a nice port, but not Taylor at its best. (2986 views)
Tasted by papak on 5/18/2022 & rated 95 points: Low intensity nose of raisin, plum, and a hint of spice. Love the palate: raisin, black cherry, caramel, something umami (mushroom?). Medium acidity, full body. Finish for days. Really nice. (3854 views)
Tasted by Sam3 on 4/9/2022 & rated 96 points: Quite enjoyable. 1st of three bottles and has a long time to go. Nose of blue and black berries. Long finish and sweetness held nicely in check. (3690 views)
Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 12/24/2021 & rated 93 points: From .375. Very nice port. (4193 views)
Tasted by ChristopherB on 11/18/2021: Not a formal note due to circumstances. Tasted at Taylor’s in Lisbon over about 15 minutes. All pours (1985, 1994, 2003, 2007, 2009) from Coravin stored bottles without knowing since when they’ve been open. As mentioned on occasion, my success with Coravin has been spotty. All tasted without anything to rinse palate (bread, water or otherwise). So these tasting notes may be way off from a properly decanted wine that has had the right amount of air.

Dark ruby black with slight purple reflections. Nose of dark fruit, violets, grapes. Ok, this has some of the youth I like from young port, but oh the tannin! (Taylor). Touch of blueberry. Esteva and eucalyptus - good balance. Back to it; quite pleasant also. Chocolate (dark) tannin long finish. Between two ages in a not as good way as the 2003, in the sense that it is still closed; doesn’t have the exuberance of youth or the mellow complexity of age. 91 with upward potential. Give it at least 4 years.

If I had to rank the 5 vintages in this tasting, by personal preference, not necessarily intrinsic qualities, it would look like this:

2003=2009>1994>2007>1985 (3825 views)
Tasted by tob100 on 8/20/2021 & rated 92 points: I'm not much of an expert when it comes to port wine, nor do I drink it - although I do love Sauternes, to the extreme - But a friend of mine introduced me and I wanted to give it a go, with this producer.

- Tasted from half bottle (more than enough)
- Consumed over 4 hours
- Took out of the fridge after spending three days, then I left it open for 30 minutes.
- Tasted with chocolate truffles

The nose:
Very high alcohol (of course) comes right up. After that i have oak, prune, plum and blueberry. The finish ends with chocolate.

The palate:
Spices and pepper at first. Then I've got the same fruity notes from the nose, I've oak, chocolate, brown sugar and caramel, raisin and figs. A little marzipan kind of finish.

The wine was great. There was a great sweetness to it, the different characters what delicious and I like that there's some other notes than "the usual" you've get from red and white wine etc. but of course the alcohol and acidity, was quite high.

Personally, I think that it would do good with a decant, just a few hours. AND I would not serve it too cold, but cellar temperature should do it. The wine will get more smooth.

Overall I'm a fan! But I can see through other notes here that this is too young now. I don't know myself, but due to a much needed decanting of this wine, maybe it is too young.

Not the last time I've tried this.

Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 6/11/2021 & rated 94 points: BBC Long weekend 2021; 6/11/2021-6/13/2021: silky smooth, powerful long palate, ripe seamless dark fruit, not yet in the developed phase, gorgeous. (3320 views)
Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 12/24/2020 & rated 94 points: Excellent. Bought upon release and have been patiently waiting to try. This was from a 375M (I prefer buying this size for Port). Dark black and blue fruits. Nice balance. It was gone far too quickly. I think these are early in their drinking window. But very enjoyable now. (4070 views)
Tasted by mtaczak on 10/19/2020 & rated 93 points: a billion years left in this, showing no signs of age and plenty of dusty tannin (3538 views)
Tasted by bambam on 12/24/2019 & rated 94 points: Still very primary, Carmel on the nose. No overt sweetness with nice woody cherries. Enjoyed in its youth. Wish I had more. This has great potential. (4274 views)
Tasted by fingers on 11/25/2019: From 375ml. Still very primary, but really delicious. 2007 VP’s are truly things of beauty. (4440 views)
Tasted by drjb on 8/1/2019 & rated 94 points: This wine is darkest crimson with a reticent but ultimately intense nose of blueberry, blackberry and dark plums with lavender and violet dark chocolate characters. On the palate is mouth filling with plenty of floral dark chocolate character balancing the dark fruits and there is great grip and drive. Overall it is more closed than the previous bottle and seemed to need several days after opening to show its best. There is plenty of structure and density so I feel there is plenty of evolution ahead. (4389 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 3/5/2019 & rated 97 points: Improved over the last few years. This has no cloying sweetness, it’s very open and resolved but retains a stiff backbone of tannin and has a dryness on the finish I find rare in vintage port. (4304 views)
Tasted by srh on 1/5/2019: Winebar [4 Whites, 8 Reds, & 7 *shared* Reds] from 01/04/19 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): THANK you EVER so much for this TREAT, Dr. Tom! :)

Supposedly 103 g/L R.S. & 4.5 g/L T.A.

N: RIPE (but unparsable)

P: Med body; SWT frt with acidity & alcohol to balance; VERY LONG finish with a refined swtness. Flavorful as this is right now, it struck me as being still tightly wound with YRS of development ahead! 20% ABV; My EXC+/Exceptional-. 97+ John Gilman, 94 pts RJonWine, and 18+ (2x), 18, 17.5+, & 17.5/20 Jancis Robinson, + numerous other solid reviews listed on wine-searcher's "Tasting Notes" pg. [This vendor's $72.95 would appear to be the BEST U.S. price on wine-searcher!] (4419 views)
Tasted by drjb on 10/5/2018 & rated 95 points: A lost cellar wine from an unknown source, this wine is darkest crimson with a reticent but ultimately intense nose of blueberry, blackberry and dark plums with lavender and violet dark chocolate characters. On the palate is mouth filling with plenty of floral dark chocolate character and great grip and drive. This is just a youngster but really delicious nevertheless. (3835 views)
Tasted by dvansteenderen on 9/11/2018 & rated 93 points: @ The World of Fine Wine (List) Awards. Delicious Vintage Porto, doing very nicely with some of the cheeses served by La Fromagerie (3686 views)
Tasted by srh on 1/6/2018: 3 Shared Bottles (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Dr. Tom, THANK you for CONTINUALLY expanding my wine horizons! :)

Supposedly 103 g/L R.S. & 4.5 g/L T.A.

P: F, poss MF, body; Rndish entry with SWT frt EXQUISITELY balanced by acidity as it morphs into a LONG, tangy/swt finish with a swtness to the very, VERY fine tannins. Just a pup with MANY yrs ahead of it! :) 20% ABV; My EXC/EXC+ with CLEAR potential for more. 97+ John Gilman, 94 pts RJonWine, and 18+ (2x), 18, 17.5+, & 17.5/20 Jancis Robinson, + numerous other solid reviews listed on wine-searcher's "Tasting Notes" pg.  Tasted by SteadyEddy on 8/31/2017: Still young, obviously, but enjoyable with extended decanting. Best on the fourth day. Very rich, flavorful, dense fruit and other savory flavor notes.

It still has some rough tannic edges and the various elements haven't quite integrated yet, although this improved by Day 4. Not surprising given its youth. This should soften and integrate further with time and clearly has room for improvement. (4894 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 11/18/2016 & rated 90 points: Some licorice; dark fruit; acidic, ok fine but seems to be at an awkward stage, or, as it is much different from previous tastes, probably an off-bottle (6060 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 9/17/2016 & rated 95 points: Black core, dense.
Ripe young fruit, smooth and a little earthy, plums and fruitcake spice, refined and brightly sweet and spicy.
Medium weight, dense, flavour packed, youthful, tight, lots of tannins, ripe and strong, sugars mask them to an extent, dark fruit profile, tar and graphite complexity, a little sweet sherbet, good acidity, delicious. (6339 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 5/15/2016 & rated 95 points: Dark red; excellent sweet nose; deep, chocolate, licorice, plum, intense, smooth and silky; very very nice (6563 views)

Taylor (Fladgate)

Producer Website

Taylor's vintage ports are renowned for their massive structure, concentration of flavour and distinctively masculine style. Taylor's Port is also renowned for being amongst the longest lived of all ports.

Robert Parker: "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades."

Port Blend

Over a hundred varieties of grapes (castas) are sanctioned for port production, although only five (Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional) are widely cultivated and used.
