Tasted by asgerG on 4/26/2024 & rated 93 points: PnP
Mature garnet red, yellow tinged, 4.5
Generous mature Nebbiolo, dried roses, tar, tobacco, sweet Slavonian cask, ..
M-T, hA, m+B, dry, rounded, very well balanced, long finish. Complex.
Drink now-onwards.
Really in a fine place now (252 views)
Tasted by Araldinho on 3/13/2024 & rated 92 points: Medium deep brick red.
Aromas of cherry jam, plum tarte, sandalwood, wet tarmac and violet.
Medium body.
Finely grained lively tannins. Blackcurrant acids and walnut bitterness.
Palate of cherry, blackcurrant, truffle, nutmeg and baked earth.
A mature, rustic and utterly well-balanced wine with delicate dark fruit, beautiful grippy acids and a moderately long mineral finish. Drink within 5-7 years.
Tasted alongside Scavino, Bric del fiasco 1998 and the matched wine was generous, complex and modern in comparison. (672 views)
Tasted by rinnocenzi on 2/17/2024 & rated 94 points: Drinking great but still with life (743 views)
Tasted by Limbus Lafayette on 10/21/2023 & rated 93 points: Enjoyed with G and X. Rainy day and solo stove. Drinking beautifully right now. Drink or hold, but in a great place right now. (1510 views)
Tasted by dream on 10/7/2023 & rated 94 points: This was such a delicious, mature Barolo more on the black fruit spectrum with authentic flavors of tar, licorice, bitter chocolate and a lovely floral lift. Not crunchy and complex but rather layered and savory with an enveloping finish and just the right amount of acidity underneath. Certainly a plug for how good a blended, high-production Barolo can be with age. Off the list at Lucciola. (1572 views)
Tasted by Axone on 10/1/2023 & rated 94 points: Excellent vin qui gagne à l'aération.
Encore très puissant, il se boit bien aujourd'hui mais peut sans problème attendre encore 10 ou 20 ans. (1509 views)
Tasted by Marcellus77 on 8/17/2023 & rated 94 points: Simply extraordinary schoolbook barolo. So worth the wait and a lifetime ahead with fully intact cork and hardly any grout at all.
What a treasure 94+ (1842 views)
Tasted by SteelyMon on 7/17/2023 & rated 94 points: Slight sherry nose blows off in 30 minutes. Cork perfect as always with Pio it seems - modest fine sediment - 2 decades makes for a bold and beautiful Barolo from Pio - drink up - 94 (1852 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 6/24/2023: Blind; I guess this was a barolo.

It looked like a barolo in the glass, had that unique red hue of a nebbiolo or a Pinot Noir with age. There's a floral aroma and lots of tobacco on the palate. The tannins are finely knitted. (1585 views)
Tasted by lek55 on 6/16/2023: Too far past its prime, regrettably. Anyone who still has a bottle should drink up. (879 views)
Tasted by wineordeath on 6/7/2023 & rated 93 points: Classic barolo nose, but still fresh. Gorgeous rich, sweet fruit on the palate with a wee medicinal, tar edge on the finish. Juicy, refreshing acid. Long. Really very good. (1474 views)
Tasted by rlesher on 5/27/2023 & rated 94 points: Aged very nicely. A perfectly balanced wine. (1464 views)
Tasted by astroman on 5/20/2023: Aroma of leather, earth, red cherry. Full body, high acid, potpourri, some liquorice, touch of tar and rose, gamey with a long tobacco finish. On the 2nd day, fig and raisins. (749 views)
Tasted by spendergast on 5/16/2023 & rated 94 points: This wine is drinking very well right now with expressive dark fruit, leather and cigar box with hint of spice. Well balanced with velvety tannins, long finish. (1244 views)
Tasted by lek55 on 3/29/2023 & rated 86 points: Waited too long to drink this bottle. Still good color, but
The wine has leathery texture. The wine finishes medium. Have one more bottle. Hope it has aged better. (1339 views)
Tasted by nadwop on 2/24/2023 & rated 90 points: This has more time, got much more balanced after a few hours. Big, tar, long finish. (1347 views)
Tasted by mryev on 12/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Amazingly aged barolo - love it! Not the best year in Piedmont, but I think this wine still has some aging potential in it. Excellent tannins provide a strong structure for the wine from the 'mouth entry' to the finish, which is long and velvety. (1641 views)
Tasted by norsktorsk on 10/27/2022 & rated 90 points: this is sour cherry. medicinal. not my fav. acidic (1859 views)
Tasted by Chrisinroch on 10/21/2022: Decanted. Not much sediment. Woke up with some air and tasted great. (1824 views)
Tasted by mike410 on 10/19/2022 & rated 94 points: Wow, drinking so well at the moment. Integrated tannins, subtle but with a bite. Amazing nose. Doubt this can get any better. (1780 views)
Tasted by MinnesotaNice on 10/8/2022 & rated 92 points: PnP. Drinking really well right now but has plenty of structure. Held strong throughout the evening. CT drinking window is too conservative - this probably has 3-4 more years easy. Very enjoyable. (1644 views)
Tasted by yipen on 9/13/2022: Still have many year left. need decant for 30 min. (1766 views)
Tasted by Mike1369 on 7/30/2022 & rated 94 points: Ditto my last few notes. I like this wine a lot . (5661 views)
Tasted by Handy1 on 7/27/2022 & rated 92 points: From magnum. Nice floral notes on the nose. Good acidity and some leather. Very tasty not too complex. From magnum has years left (1618 views)
Tasted by d'Artagnan on 7/22/2022 & rated 88 points: Nez discret, qui restera peu expressif.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
