Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 256 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by tzelmer on 2/7/2024 & rated 93 points: This wine is holding steady. Brambly dark fruit and some plummy sweetness. Med+ tannin still but in good balance with the solid acidity and concentration of flavors. Good length with some tertiary notes of leather and cigar box starting to show up. I think this will continue to age nicely. Longish (4+ hours minimum) now, longer if able. Or better yet, wait 5 years. (1525 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 1/8/2024 & rated 92 points: Beautiful showing. 3 years since my last, not entirely convincing bottle, and this is back to old form. A nose that can only be Bdx, dark fruit with great freshness, perfectly integrated wood spices. Good structure from the tannins which are however well integrated. Medium body with good concentration. Medium finish, could be longer but hey this is a (great) Cru Bourgeois. One of the few 05s that never shut down, and for sure good for another 10 years. Super QPR - paid $40 back then and would not be surprised if you could still find it at similar prices. (1816 views)
Tasted by Doc Blinet on 11/15/2023 & rated 92 points: Pure elegant pleasure from the first drop to the last. Classic pencil shavings with subtle hints of black fruits. (1793 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 7/26/2023: Getting a large dose of new wood out of the gate on the nose. The palate has more to say with the wood just joining the conversation. The aromas fade slowly. By night two its well integrated into a nicely dark and surprisingly deep wine. Not real complex but complete. In a maturing place. Solid. (2806 views)
Tasted by Klugi Wine on 4/15/2023 & rated 93 points: Wonderful St. Estephe which really aged gracefully.
The bouquet started with dark cassis notes and some cedar. With extra time some meaty, umami notes develop.
The tannins are soft and melting but it has a good structure and length to develop beautiful and be enjoyable over the next decade or more. (3078 views)
Tasted by ProfByron on 4/11/2023 & rated 91 points: Old school but quite classy. Interesting and true to St Estephe. (2637 views)
Tasted by Sonoffalstaff on 4/2/2023 & rated 92 points: Latest bottle showed a lot of tobacco ( almost barn yard), superb length still supported by great tannin. I won't rush the last two bottles as it could be that 2005 is finally hitting the heights we were hoping for. (2488 views)
Tasted by Hiker4life70 on 2/25/2023 & rated 91 points: This is very good with great QPR. Really pretty with graphite and floral black fruit nose. The tannins are fine and silky palate. Plummy and very enjoyable. (2368 views)
Tasted by schiwi on 2/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Dunkel, schwarze Beeren, Kräuter, Menthol, tief. Wunderbar balanciert, eine schöne Länge. Ein Wein mit Charakter, jetzt trinkreif, hält noch Jahre. Toll! (1821 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 1/29/2023 & rated 92 points: Cold nose of graphite, incense, black fruit... Tannin present, has start to mellow, still cold. (1909 views)
Tasted by achim_berg@icloud.com on 1/13/2023 & rated 93 points: Great wine. Good complexity and balance, not heavy. Benefited from decanting. (1812 views)
Tasted by calypse on 12/25/2022 & rated 93 points: Braucht immer noch viel Luft bzw. einige Jahre im Keller. Dann ist das ein erstklassiger, perfekt ausbalancierter Bordeaux. Frucht, Tannine, Säure - alles in perfektem Einklang.
Erst am Anfang seines Optimums! (1681 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 12/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Excellent st Estephe in early maturity. Black currants and hints of cedar spice with coffee. Tannins are rather mild and for a ‘05 but there’s plenty of structure. Excellent finish. (1773 views)
Tasted by winestorage.it on 7/19/2022 & rated 93 points: What a great wine this is. Wonderful fruit, top balanced with lots of back flavors. Absolutely at its peak right now and will hold up there for a bit. Not a marathon candidate.

Tasted by egoya on 4/10/2022 & rated 91 points: Enjoyable but not yet at its peak. I will wait at least 2 years with my second bottle. (3097 views)
Tasted by rmarkey on 2/18/2022 & rated 95 points: Excellent. Superb Bordeaux from great year. 13.5% alc.
Colour: deep red berries, crimson edges
Bouquet: red berries and plums, mint, slight delicatessen developed character and smokiness.
Palate: characters as bouquet, voluptuous and concentrated, leather and Vegemite, full bodied but incredibly smooth and balanced, with good fruit character still, soft firm tannins, dry with very long finish.
Still drinking beautifully on 2nd night. Colour and palate more black than red fruits though.

Tasted by chablis28 on 8/28/2021 & rated 93 points: A nice pour from a recent wine party. No info on the air it got but suspect it was opened at the start of the event & didn't get all it deserved. Got my pour about 2+hrs in with less than half of the btl left. Still some residual oak and structure to work through but this is loaded with intense concentration and fruit. The nose is already sublime. I'll keep an eye for some of these for my cellar too 93+ (4895 views)
Tasted by Alc13%byvol on 6/24/2021 & rated 94 points: My last bottle shared with a good friend. Rocking. Delicious and memorable. On song. Fully integrated. Consumed alongside Dme de Chevalier 2004. We enjoyed both and I really like 2004, but this stood taller and was everything I like a bottle to be. Tempted to hunt down another case while I drum my fingers for the 2010! (4785 views)
Tasted by Tompa71 on 5/1/2021 & rated 87 points: Quite humble on the nose. Strict and firm on the palate as expected. Have been stored optimal and could have used 2-4 more years in the cellar. (4208 views)
Tasted by Michael Mackenzie on 4/28/2021 & rated 91 points: Intrigued by the latest previous reviews of this wine. To my mind this is still very youthful, buoyed by its 13.5% ABV. The château's website is infuriating in terms of getting assemblage details. However, to my humble palate, this is classic St Estèphe and not the more modern fruit bombs from grander neighbours that belie the terroir.
Colour: deep red, thin rim, purple tinge.
Nose: full, fresh, ripe, cassis, v. St Estèphe
Taste: med body, v. classical, good fruit, four square, still tannic. Med finish, good ripe fruit, v St Estèphe.
Overall, a good representation of the appellation and the vintage, clearly more structured than its almost eponymous neighbour, which I like in spite of its underperformance. Plenty of life ahead and much pleasure to come. (3881 views)
Tasted by olebaer on 4/18/2021 & rated 90 points: Good Bdx. RP/WS rating I don't understand.
Drink now. Don't see much potential for holding. (3801 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 4/13/2021: Perfect cork. Quintessential Bordeaux with a lovely bouquet of some old school funk and cedar. Still a puppy, this has some way to go yet but I don’t think that it has the complexity to develop much further. Still enjoyed this very much though, firm tannins and fruit is restrained rather than overripe for such a big vintage. (3174 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 3/14/2021 & rated 91 points: blind
half bottle from a perfect stored bottle. It was really late in the evening so I have not many notes. At his peak, typical BX from a warm vintage. Everything is balanced, missing length and density. 91 (3046 views)
92 (3499 views)
Tasted by Barolo Raymond on 11/15/2020 & rated 92 points: Decanted for ~30 min. Lively deep ruby, savory nose with hints of oak and barnyard. Dry, medium-medium(+) acidity, medium mellow tannins, medium alcohol and medium(+) body. Palate with ample black fruit, leather and butterscotch notes framed by supple texture and elegant structure. Complex layered finish for minutes.
Deliciously matured and a demonstration of the longevity of this top vintage.
Cellaring potential 5-10 years. (3508 views)

Located in the village of Saint-Estèphe, Château Phélan Ségur has proudly overlooked the Gironde estuary since the early 19th century. Founded by Irishman Bernard O’Phelan, the estate was developed by his son, Frank, and renamed Phélan Ségur in the early 20th century.

Consisting of seventy hectares of vines divided into four distinct parts, the great diversity of the terroir accounts for Château Phélan Ségur’s complexity. The cellar and vat room are integrated into the Château in a highly unusual architectural ensemble. The wines are aged with the greatest of care and Château Phélan Ségur is famous for its elegance, finesse, and balance.

Philippe Van de Vyvere is the owner since january 2018. Initiated by his grandfather at an early age, this great connoisseur of Bordeaux was really taken with the Château.

Philippe Van de Vyvere intends to apply his entrepreneurial values in pursuit of aesthetic and technical excellence while respecting environmental balances.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc) - Read More about the Medoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Estèphe

Read more about St. Estephe and its wines Whereas the first activity recorded in Saint-Estèphe goes back as far as the Middle Bronze Age, the first vines date from the Roman Occupation. But it was the Bordeaux merchants who by aging and selling Saint-Estèphe wines themselves were largely responsible for this appellation's fame. And in the nineteenth century, noted for its prosperity, the great estates of today were created. The movement continues today with the merging of small estates.

A land of great wines, Saint-Estèphe is situated almost in the centre of the Médoc, close to the Gironde Estuary. The appellation is equidistant from Bordeaux and the Pointe de Grave.
The beds of soil are characterized by their remarkable diversity, the result of their undulating relief and excellent drainage. Quartz and well-rounded pebbles mingled with light, sandy surface soil are found everywhere, giving the wines a distinctive finesse. And the subsoil is made up of the famous Saint-Estèphe limestone, which outcrops on the west of the commune.

Tasting
Thanks to ideal conditions of climate and geology, Saint-Estèphe wines are characterized by their sturdy qualities and robust constitution. Accordingly, they can be laid down for a very long time while yet preserving their youth and freshness. Distinguished by a subsoil which is more clayey than that in the other communal appellations which lie by the river, the wine here attains a distinctive individuality : a very rich tannic structure, a fine deep red colour and an exceptional backbone with aromas of great finesse.

Production conditions (Decree dated September 11, 1936):

In order to have the right to the Saint-Estèphe appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Saint-Estèphe, "excluding any parcels in that area which are situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
