Tasted by rapcor on 3/16/2024 & rated 92 points: I treated it with the respect it deserved. It had been kept in ideal cellar conditions. I let it stand for 2 hours to allow the fines to settle then carefully decanted the wine with a torch, not allowing any of the fines to reach the decanter. I then let it breathe for 2 hours.
The colour had lost its bright berry hue, was moving towards amber and had lost some depth. The aroma was of spices, leathery and earthy which flowed through to the palate. The acid and tannins had all but disappeared. It was savory and long on the palate.
It was enjoyed by my audience of a 30 year old grandchild his wife and 3 friends. Although enjoyed by all the general view was that they may have preferred it more if it did not have as much age and showed some fruit. (315 views)

10/25/2020 - Fat1Wombat Likes this wine:

This is what great Hunter Shiraz is about. Medium to full bodied.
Medium deep red, a little dull and a hint of brick. Still vibrant and primary at over 20 years.
Rich, sweet fruit. A mix of acidity and fatness. Mid weight but fading a bit. Great structure and texture. Plum with a little prune and a hint of tar. (981 views)
Tasted by Fat1Wombat on 10/25/2020 & rated 95 points: This is what great Hunter Shiraz is about. Medium to full bodied.
Medium deep red, a little dull and a hint of brick. The aroma is massive. Bacon fat and black fruit. Still vibrant and primary at over 20 years.
Rich, sweet fruit. A mix of acidity and fatness. Mid weight but concentrated. Great structure and texture. Plum with a little prune and a hint of tar. More bacon.
A showy yet classic 20 yr old Hunter. (1873 views)
Tasted by rgawlowski on 5/21/2020 & rated 94 points: Really, really supple on the palate; very nice, long nose; I think right at its peak, with a beautiful finish. (2153 views)
Tasted by Jimmy_D on 4/10/2020 flawed bottle: And there’s the bottle variation. Decent hint of TCA. Drinkable, but feeling old and lifeless. A shame after a spectacular bottle late last year. Will be a roll of the dice on my last few bottles. (2238 views)
Tasted by marcellonegro on 12/31/2019 & rated 94 points: Rich berry and spice. Concentrated. (1702 views)
Tasted by Jimmy_D on 9/11/2019 & rated 97 points: Wow is the word that describes this for me. Plenty of stories on bottle variation had me concerned, but this bottle is in ace condition. The nose is seductive, the palate complex and finish long, the tannins svelt. Smokey, raspberry, plum, blackberry. A heap of fruit still in the mix with gentle tertiary notes building in the background. Some hunter earth and leather showing through as you’d expect. Plenty to get your head around in the glass. Pure enjoyment from start to finish. This nearly as good as it gets for hunter Shiraz. (1914 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 3/23/2019 & rated 90 points: Black.
Licorice, blackcurrant, blood plum, tar.
Rich and plummy, some sweet vanilla backing, tar and licorice spice well integrated. Soft mouthfeel, light acid and pretty soft tannins.
Nicely aged. (1406 views)
Tasted by thebatcavewines on 12/30/2018 & rated 93 points: Breathed for 2 hours. A soft cedar colour. Turps, coffee, chocolate, and black olive on the nose. The taste was nice with an under current of toffee and sweet berries. The tannin's were soft & supple but a nice addition. I feel some of the guts had been ripped out of the wine through time but nonetheless very enjoyable. (1600 views)
Tasted by crazywineguy on 7/7/2017 & rated 94 points: Bought at auction. The cork was stained just 2mm at the wine end, so perfect that for a moment I was afraid it was a fake bottle but one whiff and i knew it was pure true Graveyard. Classic HV Shiraz notes but distinguished by the depth and concentration which was outstanding. Again, on the palate this was clearly a superb wine that really enthralled with depth, concentration and complex interplay of elements. Softened over the hour of drinking. Looong finish. i'm going to look for more of this. (2561 views)
Tasted by fizz on 3/4/2017: Lots of variation in recent bottles, so decided to open the last one. Not disappointed. Decanted 1 hour. Dark fruits, with dark chocolate, iodine, leather, violet and spice. Palate was medium to full and carried the intensity through to a long finish. Of all the recent bottles, this one, oddly, gave the impression that it could easily last for some time yet. (2268 views)
Tasted by fizz on 2/15/2017: Deep garnet. Black fruits emerge with some earthy scents. Such a deep and dense wine here. Fruit is formidable, almost (but not) jammy even. Kind of primary still. So different to 2 recently consumed bottles from other sources. (1931 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 2/15/2017 & rated 92 points: SLDS February 2017: Toast, ash, vanilla, meat and leather. Good savoury and spicy fruits on the palate, this shows very good length. There are hints at brett but it is low level. In a really nice spot for drinking now and over the next 4-5 years. (2633 views)
Tasted by fizz on 2/4/2017: 47th TWIGS session (KC's place): 14.5% alc. Cork.
Served blind. Dark garnet colour with some bricking. Soy sauce, coffee, dark chocolate, bramble, leather, black olive. The dense medium/full palate has lots of ripe, sweet, black fruits. Like a Christmas cake, but not at all porty. The tannins are almost fully resolved.
The last few bottles have all tasted very different. This one was drinking nicely. (2017 views)
Tasted by Ian S on 1/6/2017: Thanks to Fizz on CT, whose note prompted me to open my bottle of this.

Still great depth to the colour, still very much opaque. There is some browning at the rim, but the core is still deep garnet/red.

Some meaty creosote backing plum/figs on the nose, swirling not changing it much, except bringing some black olive.

A similar savoury profile on the medium to full palate, though raspberry emerges brightly on the lengthy finish. Subtly persistent acidity helps carry that raspberry, without making this at all spiky. No noticeable tannins.

All in all very enjoyable.

If you have any more bottles, it's no crime to open now, but it should hold for a few years yet. Whether it's at peak is likely to be a personal judgement - I could see arguments on either side. (1012 views)
Tasted by fizz on 12/17/2016: Black fruits fade into the tertiary flavours of iodine, leather and earth. However, the Brett here was formidable and in the end was too much for me. (1181 views)
Tasted by Hagaprod on 3/27/2016 & rated 95 points: Easter Sunday dinner - decanted for an hour and opened beautifully. Three years ago a bottle from the same case was closed and a little disappointing, but this was terrific. Slight Hunter Valley leathery flavours running under the shiraz pepper with great length. Still deep colour and full flavour but hard to see it getting better. A Graveyard at its peak. (1557 views)
Tasted by fizz on 3/19/2016 & rated 91 points: Dinner at Patrick's place (Patrick and Tanya's place): Served blind. Deep, dark fruits with notes of iodine, truffle, earth. Medium palate is dense with savoury flavours. Touches of pepper and spice. It feels like a 'masculine' wine. Medium/long finish. (1696 views)
Tasted by sphBacchus on 8/9/2015 & rated 94 points: took about an hour to open up but then a classic Graveyard . very dark and very smooth - great balance . Wish I had more than a couple of bottles left . (1807 views)
Tasted by azzah on 7/13/2015 & rated 95 points: A wine of beautiful line and balance - everything in the right place. One of those wines which exudes quality. Quite dark fruited for a Hunter shiraz - no real appearance of red fruits. Blackberry, vanilla, plum, chocolate, earth, spice. Oak treatment of the very best and expensive kind. Almost a violet-type aroma on the nose. Fantastic. (1845 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 1/2/2015 & rated 93 points: Raid Len's Cellar #6: Bacon and meat, raspberry, spice and truffle notes. Palate is excellent, there is plenty of fruit power but it is savoury in nature and it has a fantastically long finish. Much better than a bottle almost 10 years ago. and I think it has the structure to it for it further improve over the next 10 years. (2583 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 4/8/2006 & rated 88 points: Very closed, very hard to judge. Some liquorice, violets, blackberry on the nose. The alcohol was showing through on the palate. I was excited to taste this, but it really felt a bit lacklustre. Would not touch another one for 5 years. (4479 views)

Brokenwood Shiraz Graveyard

Langton’s classification outstanding

BROKENWOOD WINES GRAVEYARD VINEYARD SHIRAZ

With its superb individuality, distinctive regional authenticity and potential for longevity, Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz is the Hunter Valley's greatest red wine of the modern era. It follows on from the 19th century success of single-vineyard wines, the revolutionary work of Maurice O'Shea, the winemaking philosophy of Max Schubert and the original, tentative aspirations of founders James Halliday, John Beeston and Tony Albert. An ongoing philosophy of inquiry, experimentation, engagement, peer-review and imagination lie at the heart of Brokenwood. A great vineyard site combined with intuitive winemaking across 30 years underscores the magnitude and standing of Graveyard Shiraz. Veteran chief winemaker Iain Riggs has developed a wine style of exquisite beauty and harmony. The east-facing Graveyard Vineyard, planted in 1968, was gazetted in 1882 as the Pokolbin cemetery but was never used for this purpose. The significance of this 15-hectare site is shown when the almost inevitable February rains come. Although anchored in heavy red clay over loam with some pockets of ironstone, the topsoil is very mean and shallow. The Shiraz vines, descendants of colonial vine-stock including the James Busby collection, generally struggle during the growing season resulting in very low yields (averaging about 2.5 tonnes per hectare). Although the vineyard has been planted with other varieties, notably Cabernet Sauvignon, Graveyard is nowadays a Shiraz vineyard. The most recent blocks were planted in 1993-1994 and 2002-2004, with additional old-gene material derived from McLaren
