Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 68 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jonahfactor on 4/28/2024: Must be an off bottle, given other recent CT tasting notes. Cellar-stored and a deeper gold than expected. Dull nuttiness on the palate. I might venture that this one was corked. (124 views)
Tasted by agsdlswine on 1/11/2024 & rated 92 points: Wow! Holding this wine was worth the wait. Delicious w/a scratch prepared dinner & also nice after dinner. Enjoy now or hold awhile if you have a couple bottles. (703 views)
Tasted by yatchisin on 11/13/2023 & rated 92 points: Gorgeous golden color. A wine about structure and geometry, with honey and honey crisp apple, hay, quince. (765 views)
Tasted by wchrisw on 8/13/2023: Found this average. I let it warm up and decanted it. Some stoney - melony flavors but that’s about it. Same on day 1 and 2. (871 views)
Tasted by wilypod on 8/30/2022 & rated 89 points: From a 375. Deep gold, ready for prime time. Rich mid weight palate, mild aromas which become more expressive as the wine warms. Not as alluring as 2012, 2013, or 2016. (1857 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 8/6/2022 & rated 90 points: Lovely Rhone blend. Fortunately, it does not have the waxy flavors you can sometimes get out of a Roussanne. Also, definitely a wine to go with food, not a before dinner white. (1623 views)
Tasted by Oldmanzin on 6/15/2022 & rated 92 points: Time in the cellar has tamed the influence of the Picpoul Blanc that is blended in this wine. A wine of great balance. Light straw notes are accented by thyme, forest floor. Somewhat muted on the nose. An intellectual wine that if accompanied with the correct food, is a pleasure to drink. Good juice. (1808 views)
Tasted by Oldmanzin on 1/25/2022 & rated 91 points: A wine so unique that it is best complemented with the appropriate food. Apples, beeswax, limestone and animal fur. The nose is somewhat muted. An intellectual palate takes you to dried fruit and hay. I really like the old version prior to 2014, but still enjoyable. (2208 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 1/23/2022 & rated 91 points: Monthly Tasting Group: Northern Rhone and a Couple CdP's (A - Side Public House, St. Paul, MN): Pale gold color. Small glass over 30 minutes. Lots of stone on the more nose, green orchard fruit skins, diesel, peach. The palate shows peach, apple, stone, a touch oily, steely, diesel, on a medium body. Well done. (2296 views)
Tasted by Oldmanzin on 11/10/2021 & rated 92 points: This wine continues to impress. I love the way the 17% Picpoul adds a lovely wild component to the creamy Roussanne and the bright Grenache Blanc. The aromatics are somewhat muted here, but on the palate, the wine excites you in every way. Lemon notes are running in stride with wild herbs, hay and cured meats. This wine is in a perfect drinking window with five to seven years of good drinking in its future. Good juice. (1988 views)
Tasted by Oldmanzin on 11/5/2021 & rated 91 points: This wine has evolved nicely since I last tasted it. Grilled lemon, walnuts and thyme notes combine to create a unique Rhône white. The picpoul has mellowed somewhat, but still creates a wild component to the wine. It is hard to describe, but it works well here. Great depth and texture. Drinking this near room temperature will help open up the quiet aromatics. Good juice. (1834 views)
Tasted by wilypod on 1/12/2021 & rated 90 points: Enjoyed via Zoom with three other couples, tasting it blind, from the same two bottles decanted and distributed earlier in the day. It was immediately identified as a Rhone white. Two couples thought it French, the third was emphatic for California, because of some pineapple-like aromas. Everyone thought it a beautiful wine.

In agreement with the July 2020 Esprit Blanc vertical at Tablas, I find the 2015 Esprit has a profile at some remove from all the other Esprit Blancs I've had, 2010 to 2017 inclusive. Normally Roussanne is around 65 to 75% of the blend, but in 2015 just 55%. It is a bit lighter with a less viscous sensation than the other Esprit Blancs.

We tasted it cool, 45-55 F. My notes said the nose was Roussanne initially with an orange custard character, followed by Picpoul's tropical pineapple, and in the mouth I felt a dominating presence of Grenache Blanc and minerality. This may seem strange but I thought the wine better integrated a year ago. So with regard to a drinking window for my stash, I'll wait for the Roussanne to bloom more revealingly in the coming years (2023-2027). (2223 views)
Tasted by Seneg on 12/26/2020 & rated 90 points: very nice with raclette (1713 views)
Tasted by Omar Khayyam on 9/30/2020 & rated 92 points: Brilliant with richness and still a minerality and fresh verve, I really like this. (2029 views)
Tasted by dlduchon on 9/26/2020 & rated 91 points: Always lovely, minerals, restraint, balance. Nice texture and complexity. (1661 views)
Tasted by VoVo on 6/17/2020 & rated 90 points: This Tablas Creek signature blend is a delicious wine that pairs well with many summer lighter dishes you want to throw on the grill (chicken, fish) or not (cheese, crackers, fruit, bread on a hot night). We love the acidity that flows through a mineral backbone surrounded, if you will, by a generally pleasant fruit envelope. (Ok, you know what we mean!) (1982 views)
Tasted by Seneg on 5/29/2020 & rated 90 points: The wine looks light gold colored. The legs are fast. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like mineral and orange. It tastes like cranberry and lemon. The body is light/medium. The wine has juicy texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity. (1506 views)
Tasted by erwanlemoing on 5/13/2020 & rated 92 points: Very nice. Strong yellow color, oily, pear and honey nose. same in the palate, nice balance. Definitely gets better as it warms up. (1535 views)
Tasted by wilypod on 12/18/2019 & rated 91 points: From a 375. This is still quite youthful Esprit Blanc with only 55% Roussanne. Given the high percentage of Grenache Blanc 28% and Picpoul Blanc 17%, and their bracing acidity and mineral character, this currently tastes best chilled, in contrast to other vintages of Esprit Blancs (for example 2012, 2014) that emphasize Roussanne's fat, nutty and lush qualities. It came into balance after about 4 hours, so decant and air.

Viscosity tells one that Roussanne is still a player and notes of raw almond, almost ripe peach, and delicate honey gradually emerge. The palate is light to medium but the finish is disproportionately long and inviting. Patience will be rewarded. 90 to 94. (1997 views)
Tasted by dino_mike on 9/20/2019 & rated 90 points: Its was quite neutral right at popping, so I corked it overnight and it finally opened up. It has light melon flavors, very mild spice too but the texture was full and viscous though the mild in taste. It might get more complex in a couple years but its lovely now. (2134 views)
Tasted by magyarsvensk on 6/29/2019: Olives, green apples, stone fruits, butter, tobacco. Very interesting blend. A bit nervous and hollow. (2029 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 2/6/2019 & rated 92 points: Terrific bottle of wine, drunk too early I fear! (2391 views)
Tasted by HandmadeHomemade on 12/11/2018: Very well made wine. Medium bodied, long finish with a crisp acidity. I love the pear and spice notes, had with scallops. (2582 views)
Tasted by zarchasmpgmr on 11/22/2018 & rated 94 points: Was perfect for Thanksgiving! (2262 views)
Tasted by FarrisVault on 10/27/2018: It should be decanted and treated like a red wine.... (2250 views)

Tablas Creek

Producer website
Tablas Creek Vineyard, founded by the Perrin family of Chateau de Beaucastel and Robert Haas of Vineyard Brands, is dedicated to growing grape varieties traditional to France's Rhone Valley. The partners chose hilly western Paso Robles for its limestone soils, rugged terrain, and ocean influence. All Tablas Creek wines are estate grown using environmentally sustainable practices.

White Rhone Blend

A white wine containing two or more Rhône varieties, including: Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Bourboulenc.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
