Tasted by gharter on 7/1/2023 & rated 93 points: Decanted an hour and it helped. Opens with blackberry, cassis, plum, graphite, anise and spice. Full bodied with layers of flavor. Black fruit, graphite, leather, anise, spice and earth on the palate. Perfect balance. Long silky smooth finish. My last bottle, but should hold at least another 5 years. (1050 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 5/6/2023 & rated 92 points: Decanted for one hour. Nose of blackberry, currant, plum, graphite, anise and spice. Black fruit, graphite, leather, black licorice and baking spice on the palate. Very long, dry finish. Medium to full bodied. Served with grilled strip steaks and a red wine mushroom sauce. (965 views)
Tasted by RojoVino24 on 2/7/2023 & rated 91 points: 2hr decant. Light on the fruit. More old man leather, tobacco vibes. We felt this was a little fizzled out and past it’s window. Just coming back from Cairo, this reminded me of the Egyptian Museum…dusty. On the upside it had nice balance on the acidity and tannis. I regret that we didn’t open this sooner. 91 (1221 views)
Tasted by travelme on 6/4/2022 & rated 94 points: My only bottle of this vintage. This was absolutely delicious. Great RM Calistoga cabernet with a great profile of red fruit. An exceptional bottle from the nose to the mid palate to the finish. Creme de cassis and chocolate notes make it extra special on the finish. Wish I had more bottles lingering around. (1630 views)
Tasted by Backdoctor on 1/1/2022 & rated 94 points: everything a cab should be. Medium plus body, plenty of fruit, tannins mellowed. wish it had been a magnum (1993 views)
Tasted by Floyd77 on 12/25/2021 & rated 94 points: This wine is in a great place right now. I suggest a decant — both because it takes time to open up and there is a decent amount of sediment. Best showing yet for the 2012 Calistoga, but it’s unfortunately my last bottle. (1630 views)
Tasted by viking92067 on 12/16/2021 & rated 93 points: Acquired new from winery per mailing list. A very nice surprise. Enjoy the R-M Pinots but this was our first Cab. Will not be the last. (1653 views)
Tasted by CMSPN on 11/21/2021 & rated 91 points: Interesting but expected more. (1674 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 9/11/2021 & rated 95 points: So much better than I remembered the previous bottle. Lots of residua solids in the bottle, but careful decanting avoided most of them. Rich fruit and powerful fragrant nose in every glass. Mouth filling and pure. Great effort. Drank over two days with similar impressions. (1573 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 8/8/2021 & rated 93 points: Delicious ripe blackberry, cassis, oak, and spice on the nose and silky palate with soft tannins on the long finish. (1465 views)
Tasted by awilliamson4 on 1/16/2021 & rated 93 points: Really luscious...great mouthfeel. Nice dark fruits. (2232 views)
Tasted by jimyeni on 11/15/2020 & rated 92 points: Pop and pour but drank over 2 hours and it never really opened up the way I expected it to. Good but not great. (2514 views)
Tasted by budman on 8/8/2020 & rated 92 points: Mostly red fruit. Long finish. (2081 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 12/22/2019 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. Nose of black cherry, currant, chocolate and spice. Chocolate covered tart cherries, graphite, spice and velvety tannins on the palate. Finishes with good length. Full bodied. Served with pork stew. (1975 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 12/8/2019 & rated 89 points: PnP. Nothing very exciting. Tight upon opening. Didn't open up that much over an hour. (2217 views)
Tasted by rmh66 on 5/23/2019 & rated 93 points: Pop and poured and followed for several hours. Initial pour was bright and layered, tightened up a bit over the next few hours, and then loosened up again a few hours later. Black cherry, red cherry, black raspberry, cassis, smoke, graphite, earth, and spice on the nose. Tart cherry, red and black cherry, plum, herbs, earth on the palate. Lively acidity, integrated fine tannins, long finish. Delicious. This is definitely a brighter style RM cab, but it's still complex, delicious, and maybe more food friendly than usual. (2145 views)
Tasted by Screameagle on 5/22/2019 & rated 95 points: A killer cab that is drinking great right now with an hour decant. We love TRBs wine and this is one of the best ones we have consumed in recent memory. Loved it. (2292 views)
Tasted by wendyinwlv on 4/26/2019 & rated 87 points: Totally agree with Fisk. Acidic bland for us. Don't know if it's going to get any better with age. A little disappointed in these cabs. (1885 views)
Tasted by fisk15 on 1/13/2019 & rated 92 points: Once again, a bit unbalanced and acidic. Wished for more fruit. Still well made, just not hitting for me. (2124 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 12/15/2018: PNP at dinner with friends and much liked by sister in law...to me holding back and needed more time or air (1892 views)
Tasted by jpmo on 10/4/2018 & rated 87 points: I’m a big R-M fan so I was surprised on night one - way denser/ bigger than expected and with a flavor - after lots of air time - not pleasing, so I opened a different cab from another producer. Night 2 - the offensive flavor (which my palate isn’t sophisticated enough to identify) was gone and the Calistoga was drinkable but not memorable. The bottle wasn’t flawed but this just isn’t my favorite R-M cab. Maybe more time will take care of this issue but I’m happy that this was my last bottle of the ‘12 Calistoga. (2223 views)
Tasted by beau11 on 7/27/2018 & rated 92 points: Agree with a lot of previous notes. Higher toned. Medium body. Nice finish but weak midpalate. Lacking a bit on the fruit. Overall enjoyable, but not exciting. (2034 views)
Tasted by Grubert on 7/12/2018 & rated 97 points: Always a huge pleasure. This wine delivers and is among my favorites. Decanted for 5 hours and tasted against a Shafer Hillside 2001, the Calistoga was much better. (2137 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 4/3/2018 & rated 92 points: Agree with Fisk15 review but didn't give it much time in the decanter to come together. A bit sharp on the finish but delicious fruit. Lighter on its feet than expected. I'd hold or give a multi-hour decant. (2503 views)
Tasted by fisk15 on 2/16/2018 & rated 91 points: Very high toned with vibrant red fruit followed by a dark fruit finish. Not as rich and unctuous as I was hoping for on this night. Perhaps just in an awkward phase. (2482 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
