Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 94 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by nrk99 on 6/2/2023 & rated 91 points: Crisp and bright. I’m surprisingly pleased by this late stage Mercurey (673 views)
Tasted by hadukla on 4/7/2022 & rated 95 points: Light and delicate, balanced and put together. Long finish with heavier fruit. Destroyed the OR pinots of the last two nights. (1269 views)
Tasted by SoundinBetween on 11/8/2021: Nose offered taut cherry, a hint of spice. Classic Burgundy red fruit, forest nuances, and cherry pit again. An easy drinking bottle with supple mouthfeel and moderate weight, this was fully mature and no expected development. A picture of modesty. (1575 views)
Tasted by wayfarer on 11/1/2021 & rated 90 points: A bit tight on opening, decanted one hour. Marked improvement with air, tart cherry, black cherry, hints of plum, earth underneath. Tartness resolves to a balanced acid spine to go with the fruit. Mineral/earth notes show a bit more over hour or two with and after dinner as wine gained depth and length on palate. Enjoyable. (1600 views)
Tasted by redwhiteandrich on 6/3/2021 & rated 90 points: Double decanted, last glass on day two was the best. Picks up more weight with air. Has plenty of life ahead. (1843 views)
Tasted by DesMarteau on 5/21/2021 & rated 92 points: Agree with Bacchus on a lot of the flavors...a bit quiet upon opening...then after 30 mins shows life but is nothing special. after 2 hours starts to get more tart and simultaneously deeper cherry core....so out of balance but more range. I think this sucker needs to sit for 10 more years....most burg is better with age :) (1606 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 4/18/2021 & rated 89 points: Pale ruby, fresh nose of red cherry, cherry cola, spearmint. The palate delivers persistent red cherry flavours plus spicy notes. Pleasant but lacks a bit of bit of complexity. (1324 views)
Tasted by nrk99 on 6/17/2020 & rated 92 points: Day 96. Ripe cherry secondary salty sea aromas. Red cherry, earthy underneath, nice acidity, minimal tannin (1437 views)
Tasted by goffo on 5/24/2020 & rated 89 points: Light, bright almost translucent in the glass. Red fruits, strawberry, ripe cherry coming through. Fresh, few tannins, fine balance and long finish. (1424 views)
Tasted by mattym19 on 3/6/2020 & rated 89 points: Needs air (or time). Last night I opened the bottle and had a glass. It was good but it had a lot of “rough” edges; nose was overly earthy and spicy, palate was a bit thin and very acidic. Now, after keeping the bottle in the fridge overnight, things are much better. The earth and baking spices are still present in the nose, but not overpowering. There is a hint of red fruit as well, almost like a subtle potpourri. It was complex when I opened it but now it is much less muddled. Same with the palate; now there are clear notes of ripe—almost dried—red cherries, green strawberry, acidity is definitely present but balanced with the (still considerable) tannins and the body—not big by any means—is slightly fuller and rounder and more attractive. I would wait awhile on my next bottle if I had one ; ) (1369 views)
Tasted by nrk99 on 12/18/2019 & rated 91 points: Great bright red cherry on the nose and palate. Reminded me instantly of a lollipop - and this is a good thing! Nicely balance acid and earth, minimal tannin. Great drinking right now. (1515 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 9/4/2019 & rated 88 points: This is entering its tertiary flavour development. Dark ruby colour with some bricking. The palate has savoury tapenade flavours and marmite with some blackberry fruit still present but the dominant flavour is savoury. (1511 views)
Tasted by RN on 3/25/2019 & rated 91 points: Intense nose. Lovely layer fruit, nice mid palate, spice.... lots of good things going on. Lovely length that just goes on. Very impressive for such a modest wine. (1790 views)
Tasted by nicefish on 5/17/2018 & rated 91 points: Showing beautifully right now. (2525 views)
Tasted by DaddyNeedsPow on 4/16/2018 & rated 89 points: Seems to be in a good place and was big enough to hold up to some simple grilled steaks. (2489 views)
Tasted by RN on 4/2/2018 & rated 90 points: This continues to improve. Lots of floral aromas. Very intense berry flavours. Not so Subtle oak frames it up,but doesn’t dominate or make too heavyweight. Good effort. Showcases the year. Long long life ahead. (2276 views)
Tasted by IlonaN on 12/22/2017 & rated 90 points: Should have decanted this wine for an hour or so because at that point it was showing such nuanced and layered aromas and flavors. Just blew away the (expensive) simple Oregon pinot noirs that were served alongside it. This will hold up for at least another decade, IMO. (2279 views)
Tasted by RN on 12/19/2017 & rated 91 points: Lovely nose. Purity of fruit for the locale. Nothing rustic about this at all. Intense, concentrated with some spice. All very cote de nuits not mercury. Surprisingly very good. (2030 views)
Tasted by Avid Wino on 8/19/2017 & rated 91 points: Cherry, raspberry. Roses. A line of minerality but this is very much fruit driven, albeit on the light side of medium weight and intensity. Fresh cleansing acidity. Purity of fruit and balance make this a joy to drink. Enough length. Improved with air. Enjoyed this over 6 hours and last glass was the best, so no hurry to drink these up. (1834 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 2/25/2017 & rated 88 points: Pale ruby with floral aromatics of roses and cherry blossom and red cherries; an elegant and delicate nose. The palate light to medium body offering up red cherry, violets and a fresh clean finish. (2283 views)
Tasted by sevo on 10/14/2016 & rated 90 points: Had this with Grandma Geri. Very elegant with lovely fruit notes. Significant raspberry notes upon opening. Delicious and quite enjoyable with Italian dinner. (2618 views)
Tasted by christyler on 10/5/2016 & rated 91 points: This was another really good showing. I think I'm beginning to "get" Myglands. Lots of bright red raspberries and pretty red fruit. Not a ton of minerality or complexity, but there's nice purity. A fruit driven wine done right. The 2010 vintage continues to shine - great acid and concentration. (2608 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 5/29/2016 & rated 90 points: Red cherry, Chinese spice. The palate has red cherry fruit, medium bodied, smooth and mellow texture, super balance, lovely flavours which glide across the mouth and lingers long after the wine is swallowed. Delicious. (2788 views)
Tasted by winopops3 on 4/23/2016 & rated 90 points: Seems to have picked up some weight since my last bottle. Black cherry and strawberry, with hint of cedar. Plenty of acidity and medium finish. (2567 views)
Tasted by Life At Your Leisure 🍷 on 4/22/2016 & rated 92 points: Lightly smoked ruby color turning to glass at the rim. The nose is very attractive with notes of rich earth, smoke and spices like cumin, nutmeg, leather, cola and tobacco. The palate is light-to-medium-bodied with a slithery, oily texture that acts as a medium to carry mentholated flavors of dark cherry, raspberry, dried meat, and scorched earth. Starts off intense but elegantly tapers to a lingering finish that's tangy with hints of eucalyptus. Drink now with a 30-minute decant until 2025. (2177 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
