Tasted by TWG on 5/21/2023: 25 years on maybe waiting that long was a bad idea. 10 years ago these were a lot better. (236 views)
Tasted by CMStrong on 9/7/2018 & rated 93 points: One of the few true bargains in the world of older wines. A wine with 20+ years that has this much freshness, nuanced fruit and life to it, and all for the price of something you might randomly pull out of the cellar without thinking twice? Yes please! (1092 views)
Tasted by sawira on 6/12/2017 & rated 94 points: Bottle #4 of 7. Stupendous. Again. This is coming near the end of its life, as the last bit of bottle showed some dulling decline the second night. Time to drink these up. A marvelous bottle. The best ever Muscadet for me and the wife. Beautiful green sheen to the bright yellow color. Classic lemon and sea breeze on a foundation of blazing acidity. Very long finish, medium mid-palate. (1661 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 5/31/2015: MuscaDay 2015: Briny, focused, bright, tons of sour lemon, sea breeze, crusty jetty rocks. Creamy notes, slight honey, still plenty of life ahead. Tied with the 2002 for my favorite. (3200 views)
Tasted by sawira on 8/19/2014 & rated 94 points: Brilliant. Most likely the best Muscadet ever for us. Blazing, razor sharp acidity frames green (not unripe, but deep and vegetal, like a Gruner), lemony, and distinctly saline, almost musky, shellfish-laden fruit, with a powerful finish. I'm smelling this right now, at the 1.5 hour mark and it smells like a barrel of shelled oysters. No sh*t. (Salmon tonight, no oysters). Musky, dank, bright, oceanic, laden with nuance, and stinkingly delicious. My first ever oyster juice wine, and I'm not kidding, try it. And, to top it all off, this seems like it will last another decade, as there's a jolly rancher note here that denotes adolescence. Awesome! Bottle #3 of 6. 94pts pure quality, 96pts personal preference. (3099 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 7/18/2014 & rated 93 points: Really enjoyable bottle of L d'Or, better than my recent '89. The fruit here is still very bright and fresh while having picked up a little more roundness and generosity than you'd get in a young Muscadet. I have a vague sense people have called this a flabby vintage but if so it's good flab, there is the perfect amount of flesh on these bones and this wine is in a great place right now. (11342 views)
Tasted by sawira on 8/6/2013 & rated 93 points: Again the Gruner profile starts things off when first opened. This gives way to a glycerin laden, sour lemon infused, crisp and powerfully long seashore finish. This is right up there with the best Muscadet ever, and we made a huge mistake having this with anything other than oysters. Luckily I have another 4 bottles to remedy that! Very light yellow color and the evolution of this bottle in glass denote a long future still, unbelievably.
A week open in bottle: Still going strong and I was tempted to upgrade its points. If this had a longer finish I would have. This really is a gem. (3062 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 7/23/2013: Last bottle of a small batch that has provided great drinking over the past 5 years. Still light yellow. Fresh orange and seashore on the nose. Light weight. Penetrating bitter citrus, swirling stone and soil finish. This has hardly budged over the last 2 years-amazing longevity and the antidote to (much more expensive) French whites that have been ravaged by premature oxidation. (2615 views)
Tasted by Serge Birbrair on 3/11/2013: Good to the last drop of the last bottle. (2080 views)
Tasted by manonthemoon on 2/24/2013 & rated 85 points: Nose was light with sea water, little floral.
Palate was light with mostly saline, salt, little white grapefruit.
A little past its prime. (1535 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 2/24/2013 & rated 90 points: MuscaDay 2013 (Tom's House - Washington, DC): Aromas of lemon peel, orange peel, sea salt and beeswax. Pure and tangy on the palate, with a solid minerals and hardcore acidity. Flavors of green apple, sea salt, oyster brine, sea shells. Rich wax and nut flavors make this a complex wine. Some thought this wine was a bit muted, but I think it's just gotten a bit more restrained with age. Still wonderful. (2125 views)
Tasted by sawira on 1/25/2013 & rated 93 points: Absolutely brilliant. Perfectly mature, still crisp and complex, this is at peak. Starts off with a Gruner-like nose and flavor profile. I know, I know, we thought the same thing. Then, in the next 30 minutes a beautiful sea shore, lemony, mouth grabbing demand for respect emerges. Not quite blistering, in fact, integrated acidity and all the usual Muscadet suspects emerge. This is brilliant and I'm so glad we have 5 more bottles. Score! 93pts pure quality, 95pts for personal preference and especially style. (1038 views)
Tasted by Serge Birbrair on 1/13/2013: drink up (1243 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 7/28/2012: Still plenty of life, but on the soft side for LP. Full, good length, lemon and rocks, nice match with the oysters, but needs more zip to be outstanding. B (1452 views)
Tasted by diggydan on 7/6/2012 & rated 90 points: Reticent aroma of lees. Palate is lemon and mineral, with a nutty finish. Good length, good acid tang. Enjoyed this wine very much with sockeye salmon poached in coconut milk with fennel, long beans, and thai chili. (1447 views)
Tasted by Pierre-Yves on 5/16/2012 & rated 88 points: A bit creamy, subtle, a bit toasty, and still some tense. Although, the striking acidity if a young Muscadet is not there anymore, this is an interesting example of aged one. (1324 views)
Tasted by coremill on 4/26/2012 & rated 88 points: With its lemon fruit, slight leesy notes, and chalky texture, this actually reminds me a bit of a blanc de blanc champagne without the bubbles. Good depth for a muscadet, with a noticeable nutty quality to the finish. On day 2 the fruit is a bit rounder, showing melon and key lime pie. The chalkiness is toned down, and there's a weird chartreuse-like flavor, with a bit of bitterness on the finish. (1671 views)
Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 3/7/2012 & rated 91 points: Fab. If you have never tried one of these "oddities" you must. Grab a bottle of 10 year old Cru Beaujolais and a bottle of 15year old Muscadet from Luneau-Papin and have a feast. Add food if you must but don't let it get in the way of enjoying the wine!

Nose of hay, fruit, grass, stones. "smells like fresh sun dried laundry" Smooth, light, delightful, dancing on your tongue, with nice mouth feel with complex flavors on the finish that carry on and on. If you still think of Muscadet as some cheap $9 plonk that you drag out once a year for oysters, wake up. This is a whole different league. A must try on anyone's "wine bucket list"! (1361 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 2/7/2012 & rated 90 points: DC Crew's Gem Tasting - 3rd Annual (Palena - Washington, DC): While waiting at Weygandt Wines for everyone to arrive for the tasting, we popped this aged muscadet. I was really impressed with this wine. Aromas of lemon peel, sea salt and mixed nuts. The combination of nervy acidity and mature, nutty fruit is spectacular. Still vibrant and solid, and I'd love the opportunity to drink this over the course of a few hours to see how it develops. (2052 views)
Tasted by tooch on 9/30/2011 & rated 88 points: Had this alongside the 1999. Another enjoyable Muscadet, with a briny-ness and focus that is wonderful. A little lighter than the featherweight 1999, so some might be turned off by its lack of density. (1812 views)
Tasted by Jossik on 8/6/2011 & rated 89 points: Gran bell'esempio di Muscadet maturo, iodato e dolce, con note di alghe e mare. Bella struttura in bocca ma bevibilissimo (1337 views)
Tasted by wallstreet on 4/4/2011 & rated 92 points: Drinking real well. I love this wine with the right food! Paired it with Scallops this time. (2283 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/12/2011: Still pale. Amazingly youthful chalk, soil, and orange zest with the extra layer of flesh and the barest hint of caramel that age brings. Phenomenal complexity and value. (2120 views)
Tasted by wineshlub on 12/11/2010 & rated 94 points: Perfume like aromas of honeysuckle and thyme. Rich palate of lemons and almonds, with sherry like notes. Beautiful mineral laced finish. Everything is in perfect balance, this is just a great wine.

This is the first time I have had a Muscadet with significant age, and it was a revelation. I don't know what I would have thought this was if I tasted it blind, I would definitely have thought it was young, and I would never have guessed it was Muscadet. (2377 views)
Tasted by wallstreet on 11/5/2010: a really great muscadet. Pear, perfumed, melon and aged to perfection. Can go another 10 years. (2429 views)

Melon de Bourgogne

Melon de Bourgogne or Melon is a variety of white grape grown primarily in the Loire Valley region of France. It is also grown in North America. It is best known through its use in the white wine Muscadet.

In the U.S., Federal law prevents "Muscadet" from being used for American-produced wine; only the full name of the grape, or the shortened "Melon" can be used.
