Tasted by MISTER17.5 on 4/9/2024 & rated 96 points: This is top tier Napa. Perfect blend of old and new school. The fruit is still shining at 27 years. This could age another 10+ years but drinking at peak. (380 views)
Tasted by Jhalpern27 on 3/12/2024 & rated 93 points: I enjoyed tonight as a flight of part of our wine group.
We had 97,14,16,17. The 16 and 17 were tops after the first hour with the 16 just a hair above. The 97 started to wake up but the 16 was the wine of the flight. (593 views)
Tasted by popasq on 10/22/2023 & rated 95 points: This bottle has aged beautifully. (1306 views)
Tasted by NewFrenchClaret on 6/28/2023 & rated 88 points: From magnum. Rather plummy when first opened, but got much more herbal as time went on. Tons of rosemary. Not a whole lot of complexity.

Tastes good, tannins are in a good place. Everything's balanced well. I just don't really care for the nose much. (1671 views)
Tasted by Pitkin_CT on 6/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Needs more time in the bottle (1604 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 5/8/2023 & rated 92 points: Luscious purple fruit, very clean. (1871 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 12/25/2022 & rated 94 points: This is a wine of place. Youthful yet resolved, with layered notes of black raspberries, cassis, cherries, and chocolate atop of herbs and wet earth. Bright, vivid, shapely, impeccably balanced, with tremendous purity of fruit, and the perfect tension between the grip of youth, the complexity of maturity, and the aura of vinosity. A glorious wine that has years left in the tank. (1297 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 8/26/2022 & rated 94 points: Decanted and poured. Aromas of funk, dried cherry, earth, root vegetables. Nose needs some time. Flavors of dried cherry, dried blackberry, currant, iron and bit of earth. Ends with a 35+ second finish with mint and blackberry notes. Nose needed some time but the palate was quite nice. (2367 views)
Tasted by spacewrangler on 8/1/2022 & rated 94 points: Pop n pour over 3.5 hours. I'd take these faded reviews with a grain of salt, they may enjoy young robust cabs or milkshakes as I call them. This has aged so gracefully at 13.5%. For my palate in no stage of decline, plenty of fruit and in balance. Plum, pomegranate, cedar, mint and some leather fill out a lithe profile. Finish lingers, a classic Napa cab. Well stored bottles have room to run. Try my last bottle in 2-5 years. (2169 views)
Tasted by orange boy on 4/16/2022 & rated 90 points: end of journey still fun bit faded (2495 views)
Tasted by Shugs_Claret on 3/26/2022 & rated 90 points: Aromas of cassis, smoke and saddle leather. Ample dark fruit and acidity in this bottle. Tannins were a bit coarser than the last. (2578 views)
Tasted by Elpaninaro on 2/26/2022: deep red color with a bit of age on the rim, classy nose of cassis, cedar, eucalyptus and dark cherries, pure, substantial, on the palate still young with some as-yet unresolved tannins, plums, a bit of forest moss, fine length, a bit strict at this point- almost austere, but with lovely balance and just now starting to really come into its own, fine bramble notes with time like a great old Chateau Magdelaine, wonderful wine, long life ahead.

****+, now to 2040+ (2588 views)
Tasted by Shugs_Claret on 10/28/2021 & rated 90 points: Fully mature with tannins resolved. Nose is smoke, tar and dark cherries. Touch to much acidity to complement the dark fruits on the palate. (2336 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 10/22/2021 & rated 91 points: A stacked cabernet lineup (James and Carrie's house): The second of 2 bottles and neither met my expection. You would expect great things from the Mondavi reserve in 1997, but don't look here for that. Tobacco, sweet fruit, elegant and uninteresting. The same thing as 3 years ago. (2315 views)
Tasted by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine on 10/22/2021 & rated 92 points: Outstanding Old World Napa Cabs: Splash double decant, then 2 hours slo O - This wine undeservedly did not get a lot of love (probably suffered slightly due to the competition), but I thought it was drinking great! Still very youthful, which is not surprising given the vintage. Nose had black fruit dominating with some spice and bramble. On the palate, there was plenty of black and blue fruit, some pencil lead, some cedar all wrapped in well-rounded tannins. The finish was medium with mostly cassis and a hint of chocolate. Some said they detected slight alcohol, but I didn't notice any. 92+ points for me...I thoroughly enjoyed it! (2358 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/22/2021 & rated 90 points: Old OG Napa Cabs (James & Carrie's, Northern Burbs, Mpls): Very dark red color. Splash double decanted; drank a glass over 3 hours. Dark fruits, damp earth, tar, and oak on the nose. The palate is layered, concentrated, black fruits, and lots of wood tones. This is a little bigger Mondavi and it shows some heat which distracts a little. Just not the elegant balanced wine I expect from here. This was the second time I've had this wine and it feels like a trend. (2015 views)
Tasted by orange boy on 10/3/2021 & rated 92 points: perfect great vintage still there (1581 views)
Tasted by rldixon on 9/16/2021 & rated 93 points: Delicious wine. Very tannic on open, moderated quickly with air. Aromas opened up after 45 minutes, fruit orchard & leather. Dark fruit flavors. Complex, elegant wine to be savored. Consumed over two days, day two was very similar to day one. This wine aged beautifully, it's time to drink up. (1122 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 9/10/2021 & rated 92 points: blind
well aged, I guessed Bordeaux, at his peak, still some fruity notes, not overextrated. 92 (1430 views)
Tasted by Javachip on 8/26/2021 & rated 92 points: Allowed to breathe in glass 1 hour. Clear deep dark garnet color. Classic Napa bouquet of dusty dried blackberries, black cherries, black currants and their liqueurs; fennel, lavender, coconut, vanilla, sweet spicy oak, forest floor. Occasional savory meaty aromas blew off with more air. Full body, seamless, balanced, lingering finish. Improved with air and held up fine under vacuum stopper in refrigerator 4 days, showing best on day 4. (1136 views)
Tasted by Trent Walker on 12/12/2020 & rated 95 points: Ok, I know, I know. 95 points for this. Look, I am embarrassed as much for myself as you are embarrassed for me. But that said, I’m angry at this bottle for being this good. It’s tops 10 from the 1997 vintage that I’ve had, and I am probably underrating this. A warm wave of blood and leather with warm smoky embers and mature cab fruit tsunamis over the palate and the nose. As soon as you smell you know what you will taste. It’s quality and comfortable as opposed to cerebral and complex (think designer Ugg’s). I will literally chose this wine anytime I see it at a restaurant as every person in the table will fall in love with it and I will get the fix of complex Cabernet that I want. I went on wine searcher and bought what I could. Rarely do I do this (ok, twice a month, but still). Value for the $185 price tag. Makes me want to explore “to kalon” vineyard more. (2782 views)
 Tasted by Steve&Bird on 10/29/2020: 1999 (2587 views)
Tasted by djdaqm on 10/14/2020 & rated 95 points: Cross between good Bordeaux and Napa. Really well balanced and restrained, yet with a lot of bouquet and flavor that developed across the palate. Still lots of life left, with at least another 10 years of good development. (2740 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 10/5/2020 & rated 93 points: WIML93

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Followed over about 2-3 hours.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of cigar box, talc, dust, black berries and dark plums. Flavors of black berries, black cherries and plums. Medium acidity, resolved tannin, full bodied. Drink or hold. Ready to go. I'd drink. (2703 views)
Tasted by rcg62 on 6/28/2020 & rated 90 points: Signs of age on the rim for sure. Was initially a little put off by the nose as there was a bit of a stewed tomato/cooked note along with the plum; it did fade somewhat. Palate better. Soft. Nice aged Cali cab. Good acidity, dried cherries, earthy flavors, and some tart bite. Past it’s prime in my view, but will drink fine for ten years. (Note: after writing this I saw I wrote something similar about the age of the wine...nine years ago!) Okay but wouldn’t seek it out. (3153 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
