Community Tasting Notes (average 88.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by diggydan on 12/19/2020 & rated 94 points: Beautifully matured and softened. Lovely old leather, tar, black cherries, menthol. (1176 views)
Tasted by JWG on 10/8/2018 & rated 95 points: This last bottle was the tops. Nose was very much like our 2017 bottle -- tar and smoke was big. Palate was deep nebbiolo fruit, earth, mushrooms, still significant acidity, and moderate tannins at the end. A gem. (1598 views)
Tasted by JWG on 6/12/2018 & rated 91 points: Not as spectacular as the last bottle last year. Still a lovely bottle of Produttori, but the nose was more muted, and the palate has lost some of its brightness. Still full of sumptuous nebbiolo fruit. So, unless this was a one-off, the wine may be peaking. I'll see with the next bottle. (1714 views)
Tasted by JWG on 1/24/2017 & rated 94 points: This has really soared since 2015. Nose is bigger than ever, with tar and smoke and dark cherries. And I have to quote from earlier: "Palate is bright with nebbiolo fruit, yet there is a darkness and earthiness which gives it depth. The acidity is part of that brightness along with a bit of spice."
Eventually tannins kick in and this wine just kicks ass, all along the flavor profile. I'm pushing the ideal drink by date back to 2018 because it is NOT over any peak at this point. Just keeps on giving. (2332 views)
Tasted by JWG on 8/17/2015 & rated 92 points: Dark cherry and smoke on the nose. Palate is bright with nebbiolo fruit, yet there is a darkness and earthiness which gives it depth. The acidity is part of that brightness along with a bit of spice. More significant tannins that previous bottles -- this has good structure and long legs, so not nearly at or over its peak. (3135 views)
Tasted by JWG on 9/30/2014 & rated 92 points: Dark cherry and smoke on the nose -- a big nose. Palate is bright with nebbiolo fruit, yet there is a darkness and earthiness which gives it depth. The acidity is part of that brightness. Then, there is a nice transition of tannin that extends for a long time in echoes of pleasing dustiness. Still young and at the top of its game for at least a couple more years, maybe longer. (2807 views)
Tasted by JWG on 12/17/2012 & rated 92 points: Can't write a detailed note but another bottle of this that is drinking really great. Has all the classic signs of a luscious barbaresco. Not the deepest expression of nebbiolo, but a lighthearted, bright happy version. (3395 views)
Tasted by Axone on 11/11/2012 & rated 91 points: Excellent vin pour le millésime.
Bon le premier jour, vraiment très bon les deuxième et troisième jours.
Beaucoup de matière, vin déjà bien évolué.
A boire. (3470 views)
Tasted by JWG on 8/26/2012 & rated 91 points: Nose is the most intense level of smoky tobacco I've ever smelled. Also a bit of floral under the smoke. The palate is bright, fruity, spicy, acidic. Very spirited flavor. Modest drying tannins at the end. (2914 views)
Tasted by JWG on 1/3/2012 & rated 92 points: Again this vintage has maintained power. Nose has rich nebb fruit and a bit of smoke. Tastes take about 45 min. minimum to open but they really get deep with earth, dark fruit, definite acidity, and more tannins than before. Takes a good 1.5 hrs to show completely. (2524 views)
Tasted by JWG on 4/1/2011 & rated 92 points: The nose has gained some richness and smoke to go with the big nebbiolo fruit. The palate has gotten deeper with some dark cherry note and an earthiness and good acidity and modest tannins. Really well rounded and developing to a hgher level than before. (2433 views)
Tasted by JWG on 7/9/2010 & rated 90 points: Nose has lovely nebbiolo fruit with slight astringency characteristic of this grape (a faint lemony note). Palate is rich and austere at the same time and rides on a nice acid layer, and ends with medium tannin hit that is well integrated. Still fresh and youngish. (1806 views)
Tasted by JWG on 12/23/2009 & rated 89 points: Has developed very well since 3yr ago. Needs at least an hour open. Nose is rich with big nebbiolo fruit. Palate is bright fruit and floral notes, good acidity, with an unctuousness. Tannins kick in after an hour or so. Still can use some time to grow. Could end up above 90. (1930 views)
Tasted by Cunningham on 4/13/2009: 5/5 Stars (2294 views)
Tasted by BSpdx on 12/7/2008 & rated 84 points: This is pretty interesting, but not necessarily in a good way. The nose is quite nice with violets, ripe cherries and leather. The palate carries the cherries, but in a medicinal, cough syrup way, with drying tannins that just clamp down. Thin, and slightly off balance, ultimately there's not much to recommend here. (2225 views)
Tasted by KillerScaryRawr on 12/13/2007 & rated 86 points: got a better bottle this time, seems like it had time to air out and sort itself out. florals, cherry, tannic and dry, lots of acid. (2647 views)
Tasted by KillerScaryRawr on 10/4/2007 & rated 83 points: strong and inviting on the nose with subdued fruit behind earthy, lots of bitter and tannic elements on taste, some grape Robitussen, fairly thin and bland otherwise, although decent finish. i put this as 5th out of 6 in the flight. average but boring at the moment (79)

b's notes - soft but still full of flavor (86) (2679 views)
Tasted by JSwick on 9/4/2007 & rated 88 points: Cherry, stony, mineral aromas. Gamey, soy sauce like aromas on the palate. very closed. (2649 views)
Tasted by jimbomatic on 5/14/2007 & rated 88 points: Drinkable Produttori! Whoo Hoo! Sweet and delicious. Almost lacking Barbaresco-ness in its forward, lush quality. As deep and dense as other wines from them? No, but this is a sweetheart of a wine that will give you something to do while everything else sits around. (2579 views)
Tasted by Veloman on 10/8/2006: Decent Nebbiolo character with red fruit and floral elements, med-bodied, a little tannic bite. Juicy midpalate, not particulalry complex. Gret with Florentine braised beef, but at this price ppint I prefer some of the 2003 Barbarescos such as Vietti and Ca' del Baio. (2922 views)
Tasted by Vikeby on 9/27/2006 & rated 70 points: Rich nose, but kind of thin taste. Not the greatest vintage I think. I am no expert though. (2988 views)
Tasted by JWG on 9/24/2006 & rated 86 points: First try at this 2002 version of the usually delicious Produttori offering. Clearly needs time open, since it was somewhat unbalanced for the first hour. Rich nose, but taste was unclear. But then about an hour in, the nose became dark and floral, and the taste started melding very well. It had good fruit at the front, and a strong tart aspect in the middle and an unctuous and tannic ending. Will let this sit for a year or so before going at it again, to see if it needs time. (2793 views)
Tasted by zerhart on 7/29/2006 & rated 84 points: Relatively big, but not much complexity. (3049 views)
Tasted by Torchill on 5/7/2006 & rated 80 points: Tasted at Pastaworks with a couple of 2000 Crus. (3309 views)
Tasted by MBannon on 10/14/2005 & rated 91 points: Slow to open, but then floral and aromatic. Smooth and tannic in the mouth, with nice balance, good nebbiolo character, and some black licorice showing. Nice wine, should improve for several years. (3333 views)

Produttori del Barbaresco

O ok just

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco

Producer
Prior to 1894, Nebbiolo grapes were sold to make Barolo wine or simply labeled ”Nebbiolo di Barbaresco”. But in 1894, Domizio Cavazza, headmaster of the Royal Enological School of Alba and a Barbaresco resident, created the first cooperative, the ”Cantine Sociali”, by gathering together nine Barbaresco vineyard owners to make wine in the local castle that he owned. Cavazza understood that there were differences between Nebbiolo grapes grown in the Barolo district versus the same grapes grown in the Barbaresco district and, for the first time, recognized it on the wine label. The ”Cantine Sociali” was forced to close in the 1920’S because of fascist economic rules. In 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way the small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. The first three vintages were made in the church basement, and then in the winery built across the square from where the Produttori is still located. United once again, the small growers continued the work started by Domizio Cavazza, producing only Barbaresco wine and enhancing both the reputation of the wine and the village. The proud past of Barbaresco and the dedication of its creators have made the Produttori one of the greatest producers in a great wine-producing area; it... ”continues to set some of the highest standards of wine making for any cooperative in the world”. (Robert M. Parker, Jr.; The Wine Advocate, 2-28-90). The Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, now has 56 members and 100 hectares (250 acres) of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation, which amounts to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area. Each family is in full control of its land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with centuries old skill and dedication. The winery produces a Barbaresco D.O.C.G., a blend of Nebbiolo grapes harvested from different vineyards, and a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe suited for earlier consumption. In great vintages, nine single-vineyard Barbarescos are produced from nine classic premium sites within the Barbaresco village boundaries: Asili, Rabaja, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Paje, Montefico, Moccagatta and Rio Sordo. These are the geographical names of sites where Nebbiolo grapes have always been cultivated. The names of the single-vineyards, the total number of bottles produced, and the name of the owners of the vineyards are marked on the labels. The Produttori del Barbaresco, which vinifies only Nebbiolo grapes, produces around 420,000 bottles (35,000 cases) per year. In a good vintage they are divided among Barbaresco (40%), single vineyard Barbarescos (40%) and Nebbiolo Langhe (20%). Produttori del Barbaresco s.a.c.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
