Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 45 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by the godfather on 11/27/2023: quite good (1985 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 7/23/2023 & rated 92 points: Totally digging this. Maturing well with a long life ahead. Light cherry color with a pink rim. The nose is bright and classic with ripe cherry, rose petal and herbal notes. Eucalyptus. Good ripeness. The palate excels. All the flavors in the nose (maybe a bit more floral) in a light to medium bodied package. Weightless but with lovely length. Just super. Pretty. To drink with food and friends. (92+) (2372 views)
Tasted by Wadham Cellar on 4/23/2023 & rated 92 points: Opened cork an hour before drinking and poured a glass. No decant. Tar nose resolves with air. Elegant, long and excellent. (2609 views)
Tasted by jamesabdavis on 3/8/2023: Fragrant roses, reticent. Black fruit herbs and a touch of liquorice emerge with air.
Beautiful black raspberry fruit on the palate, elegant. Very pure.
Relatively light and not the most complex wine but absolutely gorgeous and excellent for the level. (2651 views)
Tasted by Bullethead on 12/31/2022 & rated 91 points: Closed and suggest to wait for 5 more years (2783 views)
Tasted by Isobel goudi on 11/25/2022 & rated 84 points: Schon ziemlich ausgezehrt Würde ich nicht mehr kaufen Dafür gibt es zuviel guten anderen Wein (2723 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 6/18/2022: Burlotto Barolo Tasting + X (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Seems to me at its peak. Nice acidity and tannin, good grip and balance. Long. Drink now or within the next 5 years. 90 (3778 views)
Tasted by Isobel goudi on 12/18/2021 & rated 87 points: Klar würzig dunkle früchte. Mittelgewichtig Sauerkirsche mittlerer Abgang (4419 views)
Tasted by Keith Cooper on 9/10/2021 & rated 92 points: Drunk to accompany duck. Opened 30 minutes before drinking. Light garnet colour. Lovely nose of blackcurrant, leather, chocolate and earthiness. Rich, soft palate, sufficiently mature, tannin evident. Dark berries and oranges. Long finish. Delicious. (4525 views)
Tasted by Isobel goudi on 4/9/2021 flawed bottle: Hatte Kork (4783 views)
Tasted by jkuanl on 4/5/2021: Nose dominated by sweet cherry, medium bodied, somewhat dry and astringent, good finish, young (4513 views)
Tasted by jonanator on 10/21/2020 & rated 91 points: Will keep for a while yet, but this is very accessbile at this point. The tannins are nicely integrated and there is a beautiful pure cherry fruit quality to this wine. Really a joy to drink right now. (4873 views)
Tasted by geoffreychambertin on 9/26/2020 & rated 91 points: A more delicate take on Barolo. Super accessible at this point. (3789 views)
Tasted by Keith Cooper on 4/1/2020 & rated 90 points: Half bottle. Opened 45 minutes, not decanted. Light orangey cherry colour. Earthy nose, cherries, marzipan, charcoal. Full bodied, rich, fruit cake, plummy. Good tannins. Quite long. Drinking well now but will surely keep another 5 years. (4015 views)
Tasted by Brian of Mull on 3/4/2020 & rated 91 points: Strawberry and Cherry. Needs more time to age. Also I am not being fair as I should have opened a few hours ago vs just now. This is a solid effort. (3454 views)
Tasted by Gannet2013 on 2/21/2020: More closed than previous 375ml bottle despite a long decant. Will leave the rest for a while before broaching the next one (3325 views)
Tasted by Gannet2013 on 9/22/2019: From 375. Needs a decant but drinking nicely albeit at a very early stage. Precise with some grip and obviously needs food (4107 views)
Tasted by RuneW on 5/12/2019 & rated 90 points: Et ganske mørkt og modent fruktbilde på duft. Tett og konsentrert i munnen, litt rå tanniner som gir en tørrende utgang. Denne kan trygt lagres i flere år. (4816 views)
Tasted by AWBryce on 1/2/2019: Sour dusty cherry on the nose, pretty firm acid and tannin, this need time, not showing a lot right now. (4010 views)
Tasted by Keith Cooper on 10/27/2018 & rated 90 points: Served from half bottle. A late decision, so opened just 20 minutes before tasting. Continued to breathe in glass for an hour. Colour is slightly hazy garnet. On the nose there's strawberries, red fruits, vanilla and cinnamon. Medium bodied, medium length, cherries, smooth. Probably a little young so I'd expect this to continue to improve. (3894 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 6/27/2018 & rated 92 points: Incredibly closed off, acidic, and astringent initially. An hour in the decanter and a little food made a world of difference. Tart bitter red fruit eventually led into deeper dark yet still very bright fruit accompanied by classic Barolo character of truffles, violets, mineral and soil. Needs 3-5 more years but a nice regional wine. (4610 views)
Tasted by mwieth on 5/13/2018: Ganske åben, dejlig frugt, og imponerende eftersmag for en normale. Traditionel. (4345 views)
Tasted by burgund on 2/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Energetic and fresh, fine soft tanins, elegance and delicate nose. Still not even close to Monvigliero in 2013, but what a wine. Wait several years if you can (4108 views)
Tasted by jonanator on 1/25/2018 & rated 91 points: Fantastic wine. Beautiful clarity in the warm red fruit. Lots of spice - anise, clove, cinnamon. Great structure. Not quite up to par with the Monvigliero of the same vintage, but definitely plenty of quality to praise. I will be a buyer. (3710 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 12/27/2017 & rated 91 points: PnP in Burg glasses and slow ox for 45 minutes prior to dinner of beef stew. Semi translucent ruby color. This is the most classic vintage I've had of this basic blend Barolo cuvee since my first vintage with the 2009s. Balanced to be sure but the first vintage I've opened where it's structure is significantly tamer and more enjoyable with food than without. '9 & '12 were more accessible either way. That's not a complaint just apparently the nature of Burlotto's '13 basic Barolo. I did enjoy it standalone too but the structure melds best with food. Classic aromas of dark berries, roses and hint of leather. Raspberry, tar, licorice, herbs, mineral and again hint of leather on the palate. This has a more classic masculine structure but, not oppressively so. It comes off more serious and brooding than '9 & '12. Might do better with a decant. I have 3 more and likely will wait a minimum of 3 more years before my next btl. Alc 14%. If you have them no problem with trying them early though. 2 hour+ decant might be a fun experiment. Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
