Tasted by stretch9942 on 5/21/2023 & rated 90 points: Delicious, easy drinking and balanced. Floral nose and caramel on the palate. (1212 views)
Tasted by DoubleD1969 on 12/16/2021: Pop and pour. Light gold color which seemed appropriate for its age. Expressive nose of grilled pineapple, butterscotch, and a touch of petrol. Palate is medium-bodied, silky with flavors of Golden Delicious apples and honey. Sufficient acidity to balance the sweetness. A pleasant surprise. (1663 views)
Tasted by vide on 9/15/2019 & rated 91 points: There was a time when I pooh poohed Sauternes second growths (with the exception of the two Doisy wines). Either these wines have got better or something has happened to my palate. This is my second half-bottle in a month, and both have performed exceptionally well: beautiful lift of green banana, marzipan and superior industrial fluid on the nose; very good mouthfeel, a little light perhaps, but there are times when a light Sauternes is exactly what one wants. The 2005 vintage is obviously adding something to this, but overall I have been impressed by "humbler" Sauternes such as de Malle, Filhot and Caillou recently.

Sauternes seems to be going through a difficult time at the moment, as our collective palates are becoming drier (and I do understand this - I am struggling with the older style German wines at the moment). But if you can push your palate in the direction of the luxuriance of Sauternes, you will not be disappointed. (2936 views)
Tasted by vide on 8/3/2019 & rated 91 points: It's a second growth so, of course, it lacks the depth of its grander first growth relatives. But, nonetheless, within the parameters of what it is, and what it wants to be, this is a fine wine = light but lifted nose of muted toffee and tropical fruit; light texture of the same, but clean and elegant. An understated but refreshing wine.
If you want something grander, then choose something grander (and my cellar is full of Climens, Rieussec, and noteworthy Sauternes). They are all great wines but, in its own way, so is this wine, in its humble simplicity. (1800 views)
Tasted by jdinkin1 on 7/15/2017 & rated 88 points: Disappointing. Maybe with a few more years (3935 views)
Tasted by Birged on 12/26/2015 & rated 91 points: Wonderful deep yellow straw color, sweet fruit on the nose, thick viscous nectar of butterscotch, a very nice end to a meal. (5072 views)
Tasted by SonnyChiba on 9/21/2015 & rated 91 points: Really lovely. Golden color with slight Amber. Good spot right now but long life ahead. Tons of sweet fruits, honey, brandy-like. Nicely balanced. (4242 views)
Tasted by jeffreylubowski on 8/16/2015 & rated 88 points: Odd, I didn't much like this out of a 375 ml bottle. Tasters below did. I found it simple and lacking in acidity and even sweetness. But I paid little for it and I drank too much before it, so this is just a dumb cheap drunk rambling. Not bad by any means. (3913 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 3/15/2015 & rated 91 points: Sweet pear, honey, and clean must; some elegance; good acidity keeps it lively on the finish; not much complexity right now, but seems to have the stuffing to improve (4216 views)
Tasted by SonnyChiba on 12/30/2014 & rated 90 points: 375. Enjoyed this quite a bit. Balanced, silky, a pleasure to drink right now. (3249 views)
Tasted by subir on 5/16/2014 & rated 90 points: Deep gold color, honey, meyer lemon, mandarin oranges and wildflowers on the nose. Medium body, very sweet but balanced with a healthy amount of acidity. The sweetness comes and fades over the medium length finish. This is such a bright and lively wine. (3115 views)
Tasted by juffer on 4/5/2014 & rated 91 points: Can't compare to the suduiraut, but decent nonetheless. Nose is a bit muted with some apricot, but mouth feel is nice and the long finish is excellent with plenty of spice and acidity.
P.S. Starting to open up with some pear and pineapple on the nose. (2715 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 9/4/2013: From 750; golden, still youthful; nose is honeyed and rich with pineapple and peach; those fruits continue onto the palate which comes across as a little heavy, decent spiciness, lacks some acidity to love it now so give this plenty more time before opening. (3980 views)
Tasted by Longpourplease on 8/29/2013 & rated 88 points: Sauterne with "3Ps": Peach, Pear, Pineapple!!!. Nice mouthfeel. Still young. Opened up nicely overnight. If I had more I'd cellar it. Will look for more. (3052 views)

VISUEL: pâle. Miel
OLFACTIF: nez aux fruits confits et notes de botrytis (la pourriture noble....)
GUSTATIF: Beau sauternes. Long en bouche.
ENSEMBLE: Très bien pour accompagner le foie gras à la St-Sylvestre (2980 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 5/26/2012 & rated 87 points: Half-bottle. The wine offered peach, tangerine, pineapple and botrytis on the nose. On the palate the wine showed nice botrytis spiciness, with stone fruits, some sweet pineapple, some sweet red apple, a lemon tart finish, and medium length. The wine had medium-level acidity and medium-level sweetness in the context of Sauternes and hence seemed pretty balanced. I liked it. It delivered for its price. 87+ (4203 views)
Tasted by pacificoast on 4/1/2012 & rated 84 points: Pretty undistinguished for such a superior Sauternes vintage. Thin, simple and thoroughly uninteresting. Nothing to recommend it, rather boring. (3360 views)
Tasted by Lord of the Bottles on 6/20/2011 & rated 89 points: Very sweet and powerful tropical nose and taste. Less honeyed than the Rayne Vigneau I had the other day, though still good depth and paired well with blue cheese. (4591 views)
Tasted by esh44 on 6/17/2011 & rated 85 points: Almost a slight petrol on the nose, with lemon curd and apple coming through. Not much acidity and hot on the finish. Probably needs more age. (4290 views)
Tasted by Msquared on 4/30/2011 & rated 89 points: Was the same color as our daughter's hair. Alcohol nose, almost petrol-like, finish was not like it smelled. It was not as sweet as I thought it would be. We had it with tiramisu and it was probably not the best pairing, but worth the 20 buck... (4011 views)
Tasted by Le Vin on 3/12/2011 & rated 88 points: An easy drinking Sauterne. Bien equilibre. Paired well with foie gras. (3990 views)
Tasted by BoireBio on 11/28/2010 & rated 82 points: 14/20 Belle teinte jaune or prononcée. Nez avec des notes bien présentes de botrytis. Un Sauternes agréable avec un bel équilibre. Très bien. (4206 views)
Tasted by christyler on 7/22/2010 & rated 88 points: Very heavy viscosity. It was really lacking in acidity but managed to avoid being gloppy or sweet. My biggest problem was the heat and alcohol on the finish, although I was told that will calm down over time. Great value at $20, might re-buy. (4557 views)
Tasted by cdimaro on 12/13/2009 & rated 88 points: Bright straw colour. Delicate, shy nose that displays refined scents of dried apricot, straw, honey wrapped up in a thin spicy vanilla, waxy dimension. Plenty of finesse and silkiness. Harmonius and gentle in the character, supported by an underlying, subdued strenght from the dried fruit. Its spicy dimension keeps coming back, understated and nervous at once. On the palate it's rich but bright , not overly concentrated and perfectly balanced. Good correspondence to the nose. Long finish. Rebuy: yes. (5051 views)

Château d'Arche

Producer website - Read more about Chateau d’Arche

The Château d'Arche vineyard expands over the hillsides surrounding the Sauternes village. This unique location close to the Ciron river, allows the vines to benefit from a particularly favorable micro-climate. In Autum, thick morning mists cover the Sauternes valley and are then dispersed by the afternoon sun.

Covering over 40 hectares, the Château d'Arche vineyard is planted on a variety of soils composed of 70% gravel, 20% clay and 10 % limestone. Each soil type expresses itself differently contributing to the harmonious balance of Château d'Arche wines. The gravel soil provides structure and strength while the clay-limestone soils help develop delicate aromas. The North-South plantation axis of the vineyard ensures the grapes a maximum amount of sunshine throughout the day.

A lesser-known, but equally important, fact about the renowned 1855 Classification of Bordeaux is that Sauternes and Barsac were included. Twenty-six producers were named in the Grand Cru Classé “promotion.” Château d’Yquem earned its own Premier Cru Supérieur category, 11 other châteaux were ranked as Premier Crus, and 14 more as Deuxièmes Cru. Château d’Arche lies in the latter, and their prestige is well-deserved. Founded by Henry d’Arche in 1580 and later acquired by the Counts of Arche in 1733, these wines were treasured and considered among the best in the region long before the 1855 Classification was in existence! Today, the estate has grown to 27 hectares and the historic charm still thrives with a 17th-century manor serving as the main attraction.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

Le Grand Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac 1855 (Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac) - Read more about Sauternes, Barsac and its wines
– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
