Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.8 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 12 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Papies on 9/30/2023 & rated 95 points: A Burgundy Night in Paris (Les Climats, Paris): Jumped out of the list at Les Climats, Paris ( Frankly quite a few bottles of white Burgundy jumped out of their bible of a list ) and did not fail us at all.
A blend of a mineral and saline palate with a waxy after texture and popper polished acidity. The magic of great Chablis, well round, flinty, stone fruits and all in harmony. Focussed wine and proper carrier of the name. 95 for now but has more to give. (818 views)
Tasted by rdsboca on 9/5/2023 & rated 94 points: This was my first experience with this wine and I thought it was a great bottle. Extremely well integrated and multi-layered yellow fruit with a distinct sense of terroir. (480 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 4/29/2023 & rated 93 points: Double decanted for two hours. Chiseled, bright, yellow fruit, harmonic; vintage seems to gift this bottle with very good concentration. 93-94 (697 views)
Tasted by burg++23 on 4/29/2023 & rated 93 points: Fruit day, more open than what I expected, oyster shell and yellow fruit, clean, crisp with sweet finish (528 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 6/12/2022 & rated 92 points: Slightly underwhelmed here but still enjoyed it. Lemon curd, white flower, yellow fruit and mustiness. Less lean than typical Chablis. This still needs a few years. (1348 views)
Tasted by Montesquieu on 5/8/2022 & rated 93 points: Mirazur restaurant, Velo Roussillon cycling trip (Menton, France): I found this much more expressive than many Chablis. Intense pear, minerality, some wax. (1178 views)
Tasted by ddamron on 10/6/2021 & rated 97 points: The 2016 Domaine Francois Raveneau Chablis Vaillons was a treat as it was my first Raveneau. Dayum this is good Chablis. People often speak of its “precise” minerality and it had this in spades with peaches, pear and baked apple notes with a creamy finish in a very dry wine. -DD97 (1369 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 9/10/2021 & rated 93 points: Another lost Friday afternoon gathering - mostly French (Jailbreak Brewery, Laurel, MD): Slightly coiled nose displaying yellow citrus fruit with a hint of white, lemon curd, fresh apple, honey, beeswax, saline, spicy spices and mineral. Very good concentration, coiled yellow fruit, not as opulent yet rounder than a typical Raveneau, good acidity, medium mineral, and a medium to long yellow citrus fruit driven finish with honey at the end. Perhaps it needs a few more years to settle. (1724 views)
Tasted by jviz on 5/2/2021 & rated 97 points: The thing I love about Raveneau is its uniquely singular expression of Chablis. This particular 2016 was uncorked in the afternoon to assure it was sound, recorked, and paired with a baked scallop with panko. The match was delicious, with the sweetness of the scallop dancing against a wine just dripping with honey and stone fruit. By the way, you know it’s going to be a good night if you find yourself chipping away at a hard yellow wax capsule.

Served side by side with a 2016 Leflaive BBM, there was no discernible oak or reduction here. The wine had a notably golden color, with an exotic nose and profile. Lots of ripe nectarine and stone fruits. The wine just drips with honey. Among the least acidic Chablis I have ever tasted, and while it is absolutely elegant, weightless, intense on the midpalate, a delight to drink now, I suppose it lacks acidity for a long age. Drink over the next 5 years. (1493 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 5/1/2021 & rated 93 points: First experience with this producer. Leans toward light pear and yellow fruit notes, but fattens out on the palate and finish. Stony and nuanced, but a bit less energetic than expected. Sensational with food. (882 views)
Tasted by Satoshi Nakamoto on 7/4/2019 & rated 93 points: While with my other Raveneau experiences have been with aged bottles (usually around 20 years), this young bottle was fantastic.

Precise, fresh, balanced, energetic, uniquely Burgundy, and so expressive. Love the salinity and minerality that this wine offers, on top that lemon curd, butter, and cream. So approachable and dangerously easy to drink. I could sip on this all day. Craving the leftovers right now! (1506 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Chablis

Chablis (Fédération de Défense de l'Appellation Chablis) | Chablis (Burgundy Wines)

2014 Vintage Notes:
"... a hybrid of 2004/2007 and 2010. The stone, citrus and limestone amalgam is exactly what we search for in Chablis as the style harkens to a day in the Cote de Beaune proper (1960's - 1980's) when wine was not meant to be consumed the week it was released, battonage was not used by all and new oak was rarely seen ... the texture is natural and 'of the vintage' not 'of the winemaker' .... Like Sancerre or the Loire in general, 2014 in Chablis is one of those rare years with extract and transparency. It appears to be a vintage for the "neoclassic" ages and those of us intent on cellaring the most terroir-driven (but still powerful) examples of vineyard, site-place and varietal will want to invest (heavily) in the magnetic and electric 2014's." - Jon Rimmerman

2018 Vintage Notes:
"There’s not that razor sharp Chablis acidity in 2018,” says Patrick Piuze. “But there is good definition of place. The dry conditions drove vines to drink deeper down in the soil profile."
