Community Tasting Notes (average 93.8 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 435 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by aof on 4/21/2024 & rated 98 points: Very expressive on the nose with notes of violet, leather and tobacco but what was so striking about this wine was how incredibly complex and long it was while retaining a very light touch and perfect balance. Beautifully aged Bordeaux. (563 views)
Tasted by Woodbridge Brad on 4/6/2024 & rated 89 points: Showing some age, (might be storage, not my cellar ) but still a very nice cigar box note and sun-dried tomatoes. Quite supple. This bottle needed to be consumed (746 views)
Tasted by toppcats@aol.com on 4/3/2024 & rated 94 points: Low neck level. Cork removed intact with about 1/8 purple stained and some crumbling of the cork but no evidence of any seepage. Initial nose (and taste) of sour cherry and some funk which took a couple of hours to blow off and see the wine settle down. Color - deep to opaque ruby garnet/translucent edge/no bricking. Slow ox. After about 3 hours beautifully balanced 'bordeaux' nose with dark fruit, spice, forest floor, tobacco/humidor, and mint. Palate showing dark fruit, lead pencil, and spice with medium length, silky mouthfeel, and ending with soft but grippy tannic finish. Wine is very good -> excellent, with elements in balance, but not exceptional. Overall, one point better than last year. Better, more complex, nose noted versus prior bottle. (859 views)
Tasted by Fftjr on 3/26/2024 & rated 97 points: Exceptional. Perfect balance. Deep ruby. Opulent nose. Still has at least 10, if not more, years. (912 views)
Tasted by Sergio Carneiro Filho on 3/24/2024 & rated 94 points: Aromas terciários
Intenso
Um pouco tanico, envelheceria mais anos (887 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 3/15/2024 & rated 92 points: CdB MN Spring Event (Minneapolis Club, Mpls, MN): Very dark red/purple color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes plus. Double decanted and recorked, then later slow-O for 2 hours. Tighter, sweet French oak, cassis, wood spice on the nose. The palate is dense, woody, purple fruits and tart black cherry, but it's more the wood and austerity that shows right now, very firm but not aggrerssive tannins. Like many '95's these can be recalcitrant; but based on previous bottles, I suspect that more air would have made some difference here. (998 views)
Tasted by shutto1992@gmail.com on 3/4/2024 & rated 90 points: PNP and then decanted and tasted over 5 hours. From other notes I assumed the wine would open up after 5 hours but it never did. Light throughout and disappointing for what it is. (1029 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 1/25/2024 & rated 92 points: Dark, forest floor, juicy, sauteed shrooms (maybe cuz they just served a big plate of them??)beefy, with a light tang in the finish. Nice stuff. Guessed '99. DD Blind 1982-2005 Bordeaux 1st Growth dinner at BOA steakhouse. Classic but this 2nd flight of 3 really wasn't that interesting (88 and 95 Mouton, 90 Latour). DD Blind 1982-2005 Bordeaux 1st Growth dinner at BOA steakhouse. (1404 views)
Tasted by MarkPDG on 1/25/2024: Costed (1434 views)
Tasted by mtnbarry on 12/27/2023 & rated 95 points: Took some work to coax the best out of this bottle and vintage. Upon opening (@ 12:30) bottle presented well with excellent cork, fill and color with slight bricking around the edges. Very fine sediment, but not alot. Aromas and flavors very closed with sour cherry and cedary flavors and big tannins. 5 hours later decanted and the things started to happen. In glasses around 7 30 and by 8 30 or so became the wine of the night against and impressive lineup of 95's and other goodies. Detailed, broad, precise and lengthy with plums, currants, herbs and spices all intermingled from start to finish. (1745 views)
Tasted by essenceofreal on 12/27/2023 & rated 95 points: This was barely in its drinking window, I will hold remaining bottles for 5-10 (20?) years before opening another.

Slow oxed for 6 hours then decanted 4 more. Drank over 2 hours. Was indeed a very special and silky Mouton. But, also, an adolescent. Was far from peak. Stil delicious but the best is yet to come. (1561 views)
Tasted by J_H on 12/24/2023 & rated 94 points: - I haven't had enough time to taste this Mouton 1994 in all details. In the nose fully ready, cabernet spices, pepper, more red frutit and meaty aromatics. This bottle was storde really well and thus are just first signs of tertiary aromas like forest floor and foliage.
- On the palate it was not totally on spot, it felt a lot thinner and less complex compared to the nose. Tannins were still medium, aciditiy is great and leght amazing. Just to early to drink this well stored bottle. I would recommend to decant this vintage for at least 1-2 hours.

Tasted by bon vivant on 11/27/2023 & rated 96 points: Same bottle as Mtnbarry the last glass was the finest - impressive and tasty! (885 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 11/3/2023 & rated 96 points: Mouton Rothschild Vertical: First time drinking 1995. Still have many years ahead. In its peak drinking window with notes of charr wood, spices, chocolate, vanilla, black fruits. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Did not decant. Pop and pour. (2392 views)
Tasted by jww on 11/3/2023 & rated 95 points: Deep ruby color
Full dark fruit nose on first pour
Fainter nose when aerated
Full flavor fruit cigar box and flinty
After an hour nose relaxed nice fruit and tasted dark fruit and cherry with layers of cigar box, flint earth
Continued changing over next couple hours
What a treat! (1630 views)
Tasted by liber on 9/30/2023 & rated 90 points: 10th of 24, opened 3 then decanted an hour, perfect cork and level - disappointing, purple rim of youth and attractive, nuanced and classy bouquet, but the palate is feeble with a pinched and slightly dilute middle, ok length but poor persistence, obtrusive dry tannins insufficiently well covered, upside hopefully but needs to round out significantly, 20+ years in hand! VGI (17).......poor relative to recent bottles and to the other firsts, LLC, Pichon L, Ducru, etc., hinting at poor selection for the Grand Vin after 4 duff vintages, ie too many mediocre barrrels in the assemblage. (2208 views)
Tasted by Frank Schneider on 9/12/2023 & rated 96 points: Thats bordeaux ! Pencil, cigar box, and all the forest stuff we re all looking for. Needed air ! After 5 h just beautiful (2452 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 9/1/2023: Beautiful wine and drinking really nicely and yet still oh so young which is crazy. Surprising to see how much more time this wine probably needs. Especially obvious next to the 1985. We all split a case of these and it was just a sign that our wines need to continue to rest. (2584 views)
Tasted by lexwine on 8/13/2023 & rated 93 points: 28 yrs and still at its prime. No decanting just a 30 min bottle opening. The entry nose of the first glass was awesome and full of dark sour cherry. However as the luck went on the wine calmed down and rested on a more elegant flow than a power Puillac which was not expected. Tannins were grippy and lively which was great and the acidity was there to make this a 35-40 yr wine to be. Quite frankly I have had a much better 1996 Montrose than this. So it does not hit the 95 mark and it costs double that other wine. (2061 views)
Tasted by LB88 on 7/21/2023 & rated 93 points: Lots of dark fruit mocha chocolates, decanted for an hour. Very much still alive and could improve with more cellaring. (2269 views)
Tasted by rpatel99 on 6/30/2023 & rated 97 points: Enjoyed at Le Hatley Restaurant at Manoir Hovey (North Hatley, Quebec). Decanted for 3.5 hours prior dinner and drank over 2+ hours. Still dark colour despite 1995 vintage. On the nose its flamboyant and you smell this melange of classic Mouton characteristics. On the palate, tobacco, cigar box, cassis, black currant, leaf, spices. Concentration was remarkable and the structure suggests this could go on for another 15+ years. (2119 views)
Tasted by danielk168 on 5/28/2023 & rated 94 points: tasted blind, missed the vintage by 3 years and basically nailed the profile. Slight garnet but still hues of ruby, full of life indeed. Rather elegant and definitely a Grand Cru. Lots of mineral and a tad on the light side. Did not feel any oak at all. Very well made! (2374 views)
Tasted by toppcats@aol.com on 4/30/2023 & rated 93 points: Not decanted. Initially, fairly closed with little fruit on nose but showing ,as described here on another review, (a not unpleasant) charred wood, forest floor, with pencil shavings, and a hint of mint. Some fruit on palate, full body, and mild tannins. This Mouton improved significantly with time and with being poured via an aerator (Swirling in the glass also helped coax this wine). After a couple of hours the nose showed more with cherry and dark fruits noted above the glass along with notes of wood/pencil shavings (hint of mint seemed to come and go). Increased fruit on palate over time with an increased sense of tannins as well. Medium length of finish. Reviews here have noted the need for patience with this wine to open up - and I have to agree.  Tasted by BLam on 2/28/2023 & rated 93 points: My first taste on this vintage and it served well. (2199 views)
Tasted by Rani on 2/6/2023 & rated 91 points: Tasted blind. The bottle was in a decanter for four hours but was still too tight and unyielding. Dusty, inky, concentrated but not overripe. This needs another decade… (3560 views)

Blend: 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
