Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 94.1 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 28 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Mark1npt on 1/30/2024 & rated 93 points: HMCs bottle brought to the table after a 2 hour double decant then sitting in the open bottle for about an hour til we got to taste it.

Initial nose on opening for the decant was very Cab Franc-ish with green/herbal notes dominating. These faded over time, disappeared completely at about 4 hours of air then slightly re-emerged at the end of the evening, approaching 7-8 hours of total airtime.

The palate was red fruited with a hint of spice along with oak and still some tannins. This bottle not quite what the last few have been. We speculated it may be in an in-between phase right now. I'd hold bottles for a few more years if you have them as air did not seem to help as much right now. 92-93 for me. (876 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 7/23/2023 & rated 95 points: I drank two bottles of Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso during my five weeks in Italy. The comp at the time - the one that came to mind immediately - was Detert. I will stick with my guns after opening this bottle, although Detert is quite a bit sweeter and more lush. Coravin. One hour in the glass. Peak at two hours. Graphite. Excellent wine, with beef ribeye. I need to taste the two wines side by side; that would be fun. Also, absolute gem on day two, albeit very American in style compared to Paleo. (642 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 5/7/2023 & rated 96 points: Two years since my last bottle and this is the last of my '16 stash. Opened last night as we all needed one more glass while playing cards after dinner. Repour stopper immediately put into the last half bottle to keep for drinking today.

Last night.....immediately accessible and singing. Needed zero time to be ready. Nose is of dark fruit, a little brambly whiff of florals but no green or sage as it had, when younger. The darkest opaque ruby in the glass. Dark, silky smooth fruit, smooth, sweet polished tannins and a very balanced palate. A little coffee bean. It has integrated quite well and now I wish I had kept my hands off the earlier bottles, which I gave 95s to. Today, the 2nd half of the bottle is as beautiful if not more. Perfect preservation overnight with the Repour stopper. Because it can be a bit reductive to the wine for a short time right after removal, I find the last glass to have a tad of balsamic caramel on the palate along with the dark coffee bean. I love that. It makes the wine richer, creamier, too. After an hour it returns to exactly where it was last night with no degradation. 95 last night, 96 today. A beautiful wine. (1728 views)
Tasted by Jimaronson on 5/5/2022 & rated 93 points: Pleasant wine, but still rustic. Tasted green pepper, earth, tobacco, and dark red fruit. I found the tannins a bit astringent after two hours in the glass. The wine was opened with a coravin. I tasted it over a two week period and the last glass was the best. The tannins were more resolved and the underlining dark berry fruit was sweet. I would recommend holding this for a couple of years at which time after a four hour decant it will approach a 95 score.  Tasted by JustBreathe680 on 2/20/2022 & rated 94 points: Decanted for 2 hours then returned the wine back into a cleaned bottle and returned to cellar temperature at 55 degrees in a U-Line U-Chill. Consumed over the next 4 hours out of a Grassl 1855 stem. The wine was paired with a Flannery Dry Aged New York Strip.

The nose was of flowers, red fruits and earth tones. The palate was of strawberries, cherries, green bell pepper and minerality. The tannins were medium to high and the body was medium to full. It had good medium to medium+ acidity. It was well balanced.

The wine is in a good drinking window now with a decent decant but it will only get better over the next decade+. If you have patience there is no need to rush this bottle but if you are curious and are itching to pop a cork, there is no shame in drinking this bottle now as long as you have time to introduce some air and its not just a PnP.  Tasted by Rbhan12 on 1/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Soul-searching in Napa. Beta-Jasud, Roy Piper, Detert, Elyse, Diamond Creek, Favia, Opus, Gargiulo, among others!; 1/17/2022-1/22/2022: Tasted with Tom at Dakota Shy.

Wasn't able to take detailed notes, going from memory, but this was an absolutely fantastic wine. Dark fruit, earthy, has some character that is discernibly Franc. So much structure and tannin here that makes this easily a 20 year wine.

Definitely good with some air time but no need to rush and pull a cork. (2186 views)
Tasted by ledocq on 11/19/2021 & rated 94 points: Maybe my favorite Detert CF to date. As ever, opens as if it's cabernet sauvignon's lighter brother, but in this case after two hours it suddenly took on extra nuance. Had it with Holy Grail wagyu burgers. really good stuff. (1367 views)
Tasted by BadOyster on 5/31/2021 & rated 92 points: Thick, rich, explosive Cab Franc. Nicely balanced hint of oak. Perhaps a bit too high octane for my taste. Hold for a while to see if nuance exposes itself over the years. (1784 views)
Tasted by tpbrown5 on 5/30/2021 & rated 94 points: Lots of graphite … great wine (1189 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 4/20/2021 & rated 95 points: Opened this only because I didn't want to touch one of my '18s yet! Initial nose of slight green pepper gave way to sage after 30 minutes. Initial taste was beautiful, rich red fruit. After 1 hour in the glass it was singing......soft, creamy mouth feel.....velour like. This wine over the next 1-2 hours really settled in nicely, close to a 96 for me. (2583 views)
Tasted by KenK on 4/16/2021 & rated 95 points: Still a baby, but already drinking so well. Excellent purity of ripe red fruits with soaring aromatics. Dense sweet and intense ripe mixed berry flavors with a succulent quality. Smooth sensual texture hitting every nook and cranny with starburst like qualities. Very long and fresh finish is quite impressive. So young, but so good, the harmony and overall impression is spectacular. This is a special vintage for Detert in my opinion. Could warrant a higher score in time. (1196 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 3/6/2021 & rated 94 points: Boysenberry. Sweet. Even better on day two. (1055 views)
Tasted by deadwax on 1/29/2021 & rated 94 points: Cab Franc that drinks similar to a cab sauv. A young wine but no baby fat, oak well integrated. Nice violet note on the nose and palette. Decanted for a couple hours. 94 pts for now with upside. (1135 views)
Tasted by Elkcims on 12/22/2020 & rated 95 points: Same notes as 8 months ago:
Beautiful full medium to full bodied expression of Cab Franc. Flowers, dark fruits, coffee. Best after 2 hour decant. (1060 views)
Tasted by JJB007 on 11/29/2020 & rated 94 points: love their half bottles when you are being good (991 views)
Tasted by ffzhang on 10/26/2020 flawed bottle: Not 100% sure if flawed but had a reductive-like unpleasant aroma upon pop and pour. Dissipated after some time in glass but classic Franc flavors never came around. Unfortunate, as this was my only bottle that I purchased directly from the winery. (1233 views)
Tasted by Elkcims on 4/16/2020 & rated 95 points: Beautiful full medium to full bodied expression of Cab Franc. Flowers, dark fruits, coffee. Best after 2 hour decant. (1221 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 3/24/2020 & rated 94 points: Decanted. Pencil lead. Graphite. Violet? Lavender? (1072 views)
Tasted by Gas Station Wine Guy on 2/3/2020 & rated 95 points: Dark berries with violets, & pencil shaving & fresh cracked black pepper. Young & tight but improving with air.
Palate- darker berries, violets, coffee notes, with some graphite, medium acid & very well integrated oak. Medium body noticeable tannins. This is damn good and could use a few years in the cellar. My first time trying and Detert and I'm quite impressed. (1355 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 1/11/2020 & rated 94 points: This needs at least three hours of air. (1251 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 9/1/2019 & rated 94 points: Decanted. Juicy. Pencil lead. Graphite. Grape popsicle. Winery smell and taste. Full and rich. The timing is borderline... recommend waiting one year and evaluating again. (1505 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 5/19/2019 & rated 94 points: Needs to breathe because it is young; decant. Graphite. Pencil lead. (1324 views)

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wines & Vines article

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
