Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Pinotfanbg on 2/27/2021 & rated 92 points: Dark purple - black color. Scents of blackberry, mocha, minerals, cinnamon spice and a bit of floral lift. Big blackberry fruit. Some ripe fruit tannins and spicy wood tannins on the palate. I think this saw a good bit of oak in it’s elevage. It’s mostly absorbed now. Medium density and length on the finish with a bit of grip. Not at all hot or showing it’s alcohol. Very nice, good value Tokalon Cabernet. (724 views)
Tasted by ledocq on 12/19/2020 & rated 93 points: Needed three hours to open up - before that, I thought it was mildly corked because I'm an idiot. Still one of my favorite wines. (944 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 5/30/2019 & rated 92 points: Off the list. Poured a couple of glasses and decanted the rest. Plum, sweet tobacco, blue fruit, pepper and herb aromas. Softened tannins. Black raspberry, plum and red berry fruit; long finish. Nicely balanced. 92+ for me and for Domino (who is not a fan of franc), high praise, 91. (1110 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 4/27/2019 & rated 95 points: Superb wine drinkly really well, paired with American Wagyu New York Strip. (1046 views)
Tasted by IJC on 5/19/2018: Delicious. Solid. Right in the drinking window. Fully resolved tannins, rich dark fruit, with just the right amount of tartness to keep it balanced. Whatever subtleties one might detect - bramble, bitter cherries, etc. - they alone are not the point; they support a larger message. This is a big wine, to be enjoyed in large measure, with food that is its equal. Paired excellently with a flank steak with marrow and red wine sauce - the wine and food complimenting each other.

Rated 1 on a scale of -1 to 3. (1418 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 1/27/2018 & rated 94 points: Heavy sediment on shoulder. Tasted Like Bordeaux. Great steakhouse wine. (994 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 12/17/2017 & rated 93 points: This wine should be imbibed now. (997 views)
Tasted by IJC on 11/23/2017: "Infanticide" - note to file, this bottle definitely needed more time, and hold off at least 2 years before approaching again.

Nonetheless, quite a bottle. Almost black in color and density, a powerful nose and matching strong flavors, and a considerable punch of alcohol - this is in every sense of the word a big wine. The tannins need time in the bottle, and exposure to air to resolve. We failed to give it enough of either this outing, but we enjoyed the drinking experience, especially as it was the finale to a Thanksgiving Dinner with all the trimmings. We were thinking red meat might be a better accompaniment - the turkey was not pardoned - and whatever sensibilities might have been dulled by the groaning board, with this bottle, we ended the feast on a high note.

Rated 1 on a scale of -1 to 3. (I expect a future uptick of rating with more age). (901 views)
Tasted by ledocq on 8/26/2017: Had it this time with slightly spicy Italian food and it was fantastic. Went with everything. This is lighter than the Sauvignon, and I find it less tannic. Really charming, really satisfying. (1072 views)
Tasted by brianofthevine on 4/2/2017 & rated 92 points: Chalky blueberry pie and plum with white pepper and earth. Full bodied and nice long finish. (730 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 10/21/2016 & rated 93 points: Heavy sediment on the shoulder. Nose of black pepper, blueberry, and candied pecan. The first sip was watery. It improved after that though. Oak wine barrel, raspberry, and dry finish. Herbal? Floral? Grape popsicle? Maybe some tea leaves. Tart cherry. Salt. This is a great steakhouse wine. The empty glass smells incredible at the end.  Tasted by AllRed on 3/26/2016 & rated 90 points: 4th Saturday group "uptown" tasting (Mark & Rochelle's): Dark inky crimson color. Aromas of menthol, balck fruit and plum with a dusty, earthy undertone. There's nice fruit on the palate, and it's on the riper side of the spectrum, but I like it and the wine has a nice finish. Guessed Napa Cab Sauv.

While a nice wine, I found no Cab Franc character and was very surprised when this was unveiled, and I recall quite a few others sharing this opinion. This has also crept up quite a bit in price over the years, and for the $80+/- this commands, there are better Cab Francs to be had IMO. (1798 views)
Tasted by Mrp2008 on 12/13/2015 & rated 91 points: Aging well and starting to turn a corner towards maturity. Subdued fruit, incredibly herbal, specifically fresh thyme with chalky dark fruit. More old world than expected for Oakville. Huge tannins, which likely will always overpower. Consistent over 2 days. Intrigued by Detert. 90-91 (1108 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 3/27/2015 & rated 94 points: Wood and grape popsicle. Delicious Napa red wine that embodies what I seek. (1513 views)
Tasted by ledocq on 3/15/2015 & rated 92 points: I like the prior notes here -- I'd just add that on night 3, it's still strong. A delight. (1773 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 12/26/2014 & rated 94 points: Decanted. Alcohol on the nose. Slightly floral. Massive olive. Earth. Plum. Smell and taste of what I would call terroir. This seems French to me. Vanilla. Almond extract. Pepper. Orange rind. Sort of hot finish with some sourness and tang. Not mellow. Sharp, but in a good way. Still young. Excellent wine. I am a big fan of Detert. (1375 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 7/26/2014 & rated 90 points: 4th Saturday Group brown bagger (M&R's): Notes of candied black raspberry and dark fruit. Black fruit on the palate- reminds me of a Biale. Nice balance and fruit, finishing with good length. Guessed Zinfandel. (2234 views)
Tasted by dlcass on 12/8/2013 & rated 92 points: Nice wine. Soft, integrated tannins; a touch of jamminess at first that seemed to dissipate. (1867 views)
Tasted by Napacablover on 9/9/2012 & rated 93 points: Great bottle of Cab Franc! (2006 views)
Tasted by prettydeceextrap on 10/22/2010 & rated 93 points: Winery Tastings, October 2010; 10/22/2010-10/25/2010 (Mt. Veeder, Oakville, Spring Mountain, St. Helena, Calistoga, Napa): Drank alongside their 04 and 05 cab franc. This one was probably the best of the bunch. Big, bold fruit with smoke and graphite, along with black licorice and anise. Complex in the mid-palate. (4048 views)

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wines & Vines article

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
