Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by grafstrb on 11/17/2023 & rated 91 points: -- decanted 1 hr. before initial taste --
-- tasted non-blind over 2 hrs. --
-- 70% Mourvedre; 25% Grenache; 5% Syrah --

NOSE: perfumed, dark & spicy red fruits; slight high-toned bent; not funky; aromatics started-out in quite showy fashion, but noticeably subdued over a couple hours.

BODY: youthful, blood red color of great depth; barely any bricking; full bodied; perfect cork.

TASTE: Ash, who was tasting blind, guessed “smells Mourvedre … Rhone varieties … 2012” – so pretty damn spot-on; very darkly-fruited; Robitussin cough drops, but more darkly-fruited; med. to med.+ acidity; dark, baked raspberries; 14.6% alc.; Drink Now and over the near term. Ash gut impression score: 93

Tasted by kevinpatrick on 7/3/2022 & rated 92 points: Sunday Drop-in at Cork Vault Charlotte (Guigal, Delas, Tablas Creek) (Charlotte, NC): Late entrant, decanted ~1.5 hours after the Rhones and hit its stride at the 2 hour mark.
Nose: Soft, gentle notes of raspberries.
Body: Elegant wine (but give it the full 2 hours of air); smooth texture and balanced red fruit notes. Easy drinking and more approachable. A crowd pleaser.
Finish: Medium length and enjoyable.
This "Southern Rhone" blend from Paso Robles was a fun and tasty complement to the Northern Rhones. 3 Votes for Wine of the Night which speaks to "all wine tasting is personal" and the bias of any amateur scorer as I had this a notch below the Rhones yet it was clearly a strong performer to the crowd.  Tasted by dino_mike on 4/19/2022 & rated 95 points: Great example of this wine in a good vintage and age. Drinks perfect now, why wait. A couple hours aeration is needed. Great balance of cherry fruit and darker brooding notes but super balance and length. (920 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 9/26/2020 & rated 90 points: Smooth and slightly sweet plum and strawberry; animale notes; tannins virtually resolved and soft mid palate; just past its prime for me (1113 views)
Tasted by dino_mike on 8/10/2020 & rated 91 points: Drinks very good now, especially after gentle aeration. Last half of the bottle had a nice red strawberry with cinnamon spice. Good intensity and great balance. I would hold on until next year mid 2021 to drink again but it certainly can wait 2-3 years before drinking. (1139 views)
Tasted by jimineff on 3/12/2020 & rated 92 points: Unlike the same vintage Esprit, the Panoplie is still drinking very well. Great nose, good fruit, fine tannins. (1133 views)
Tasted by sfbikeguy on 1/24/2020 & rated 93 points: Nice wine. Needed about 2 hours to get to a nice spot. Agree that after 3 hours it was better. (1035 views)
Tasted by dino_mike on 10/7/2019 & rated 96 points: Simply amazing: Super smooth and refined, just a small bit of velvety tannins but the red fruits over blue dominate (quite surprised) this mostly mourvedre blend GSM. Warm strawberry and cooked pie cherry with lurking forest floor and spices way beneath. Very fragrant on opening and still got better over 3 hours. Drinks perfect now, would be a fun stunner comparing French Rhones to this and it will be fine over 2 years, probably more. (1157 views)
Tasted by SteveG on 11/10/2018 & rated 88 points: From memory, ripish CdP blend, seems an accomplished wine, but I couldn’t get past the blueberry and alcohol palate. (1071 views)
Tasted by A6Rover on 2/16/2018 & rated 91 points: Cellared properly and paired with a true cassoulet (duck and pork). The cork broke but was readily dealt with and the wine showed no flaws. Light but expected bricking. Appealing dark fruit aromas including a characteristic Paso Robles scent, but that wasn't overpowering. Flavors were balanced acidity and fruit tending toward the tobacco, beef jerky, and some just overripe fruits. Perfectly enjoyable wine to pair with this rich and lusty meal. (1204 views)
Tasted by VoteferPedro on 7/13/2017: Sampled over several days with not much change

I find the flavors to be well delineated black fruits but pushing into over-ripeness. That concetration comes off initially a bit fat but smooths out on the finish with some depth

I think they did a good job crafting a wine of interest from over ripe grapes but in the end not something that I find appealing

It has enough structure to go 3-5 years but I feel that will not enhance it
for me a B+ or 85-87 but I can see other palates going higher (1394 views)
Tasted by smcg on 11/28/2016 & rated 88 points: Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I did a vertical Panoplie tasting with ’04, 05, ’06, ’07, and ’08 vintages. All of these wines were tasty, but there were some distinct differences. The ’04 and ’05 were fairly similar-- mature, soft, plum-like and gained some spice and complexity after a bit of time in the glass. I’d suggest drinking these if you still have them. The ’06 and ’08 were also similar—younger and a bit more interesting that the two oldest wines, with more cherry fruit than plum. The ’07 was the most different and controversial—it seemed much more youthful, and full of peppery spice. The ’07 was my favorite, but others preferred the ’06 and ’08. (1818 views)
Tasted by BVal on 3/5/2016 & rated 89 points: Color: nearly opaque ruby core -> medium-deep ruby rim with some bricking evident. Let this develop over the course of 2+ hours. Bouquet of black cherries and plums with a little tobacco and a slight earthy edge. Palate showing cherries and plums again with some (nice) black tea. Medium (and just a little muddy) bodied wine with adequate structure and acidity and length. Tannins lightening up but still present . . . . Have to say I'm searching in vain for real complexity here and really not finding any in this high-end Cali-CDP clone. I was really hoping for a lot more given the lofty scores for this wine, especially at 11 years out, but I'm just not feeling the luv. To my mind this underdelivers for the price tag. (2324 views)
Tasted by bruce.lovett@yahoo.com on 2/28/2016 & rated 92 points: Opened at 4 PM and drank at 6 PM. Berries, jam, some fruit, opened up beautifully. Fairly straightforward. Gave the impression that it could age longer. (2111 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 5/3/2015 & rated 89 points: Second Sunday Group: Panoplie vertical (Jeff's): Red currant, lavender and herb notes dominate, adding a ripe dark fruit/plum note as it sits. Spice, herb and red fruit qualities on the palate. Less acid than wines A - C, but it finishes with very good length. 89+ pts.

My #6, Domino's #5
Group #4, 48 pts (3050 views)
Tasted by DodgerDave on 12/26/2014 & rated 92 points: Snowy Christmas Colorado Dinner of prime rib and this great wine! Opened and tried first small glass after 1 hour. Great full mouth, complex and subtle ruby brown color and slight tannin. While roast cooked wine opened up further and after 3 hours was very special. Smooth, berry, cherry, smoke hints. Held will with dinner and glad I didn't wait to open. Kept one small glass for next day and still wonderful. (2572 views)
Tasted by tward on 11/30/2013 & rated 92 points: Decant this. After 15 minutes of decanting I'd give it an "88". Three hours later, a "92". Through the entire journey it had plenty of dark fruit, never heavy or cloying, but deep. At first it showed black tea, Asian spices, and some elements of soy or Hoisin sauce and it seemed slightly "cooked". As time went on it settled in and added layers. A few hours in it showed chocolate on the nose and taste, eucalyptus, hints of mint, cassis, forest floor, and garrigue while brighter red fruits seemed to pop up. The tannins added grip to the finish, indicating this could age longer, but they weren't too drying or gritty and did not completely close off the finish.

A wonderful wine. Even so, I'd give it average QPR given the $75+ price point and then many years of aging. [Aside: This wine was stored well, but not perfectly. It saw no day-to-day changes but seasonal swings from probably the low 50s to the upper 60s degF.] (3048 views)
Tasted by Haltermr on 7/9/2012 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured. Initially showed copious fruit, then, within an hour, closed down and became quite course. Vacusealed, came back on day two. Now drinking beautifully. Beautiful blackberries, strawberry preserve, mineral, and blueberries. No real earth or leather notes. Nice body and energy across the palate with refined but abundant tannins and a 25 second finish.
This highlight here was the purity and depth of fruit and mouthfeel. Not extremely complex. (3969 views)
Tasted by jeff nowak on 1/26/2010 & rated 93 points: bold without going over board. lovely fruit and mouthfeel. recommended, especially at the price offered at the tasting, $63. (5035 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 1/26/2010 & rated 93 points: Dark ruby color. Red berry aromatics. Tastes of raspberry, cherry and blackberry. Rich fruit on the mid palate. Full bodied. Good balance. Powerful finish with very nice depth and complexity. Impressive. (5335 views)
Tasted by Haltermr on 12/7/2008 & rated 93 points: Beautiful stuff. Opened nicely to show underbrush, dust, a touch of game, plum, black cherry, mineral and espresso. Incredible palalte, excellent midpalate complexity and long finish. Very tannic, but tannins are refined. Great stuff, and actually quite drinkable. (4200 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 5/16/2008 & rated 91 points: No real formal note taken. Great nose I remember, good fruit and floral characteristics. Palate had good extraction, a bit dusty, a little hot on the finish and real high tannins. WAIT 5 YEARS MIN. (3877 views)

Tablas Creek

Producer website
Tablas Creek Vineyard, founded by the Perrin family of Chateau de Beaucastel and Robert Haas of Vineyard Brands, is dedicated to growing grape varieties traditional to France's Rhone Valley. The partners chose hilly western Paso Robles for its limestone soils, rugged terrain, and ocean influence. All Tablas Creek wines are estate grown using environmentally sustainable practices.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
