Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 11 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Herschel Krustofski on 4/30/2020 & rated 92 points: Last bottle. I didn't think it will last that long, but it seems like it's still at peak (or not too far from peak). Fully mature, generous fruit, quite soft and approachable. Drink up.
20-25 min decant recommended (for well-kept bottles; this one was professionally stored at the cellars of the Wine Society for 7 years). (920 views)
Tasted by nsellen on 5/13/2016 & rated 89 points: Fresh and primary. Black Forest Gateau nose. Powerful entry with a hit of heat from the alcohol. First entry is primary and sweet. Spice, dried figs, licorice chew. This is rich, quite sweet, a bit fruit cakey. Very easy to like although it needs to be temp controlled. (2521 views)
Tasted by bruno64 on 1/2/2016 & rated 92 points: Classic Chateauneuf-du-Pape, agreeing with the other notes, but although this is so much better than when drank even a year ago could do with a couple more years to be at its best. Still tight, sweet and sharp when these mellow and blend will be smooth rich and full of fruit. (2526 views)
Tasted by PT insurgent on 8/6/2015: Pronounced nose. Notes of black olives, black fruits - plum, cherry, blackberry. Strawberry, raspberry. Prunes, figs. Leather, earth. Violets, black pepper, cinnamon, licorice.
Palate is dry, med+ acid, high tannin, full body, pronounced intensity. High alc, well integrated.
Notes of black fruits, plum, cherry, blackberry. Prune, fig. Leather, earth. Floral - violet. Clove, cinnamon, licorice. Black pepper. Long finish. (2503 views)

Nose: The nose is Clean and Developing, showing Pronounced intensity primary aromas of red cherry, raspberry, redcurrant, red plum, blackberry, blackcurrant, black pepper , secondary aromas of vanilla, cinnamon, cloves and tertiary aromas of forest floor , cooked fruit.
Palate: The wine is Dry in the mouth with a Medium(+) level of acidity. It has Medium(+) Ripe/Soft tannins and a High Level of alcohol (15.00%). It has Full body and Pronounced intensity primary flavours of red cherry, raspberry, redcurrant, red plum, blackberry, blackcurrant, black pepper , secondary flavours of vanilla, cinnamon, cloves and tertiary flavours of forest floor , cooked fruit. The finish is Long
Overall: Complex, intense, long. Great balance between ripe fruit, acidity, tannins and well integrated alcohol. Has potential to age. Superb typicity.
Conclusion: It is an Outstanding quality wine. Drink Now; not suitable for Ageing or Further Ageing Has all the attributes for another 5 - 10 years of ageing; Premium priced (£35.00) (5357 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 6/24/2014: quite restarined on the the nose - herbs, dates, figs
quite tannic, feels like it's just opening up
big wine, lots of alcohol
some nice herby notes
I tried it too warm and to be honest it didn't taste great, but cooler and with suitable food should be good.
No hurry to drink (1303 views)
Tasted by Herschel Krustofski on 3/24/2013 & rated 92 points: Trial balloon. Decanted. Sampled over the course of 3 hours. Marvellous intense bouquet in the first 30 minutes. Surprisingly approachable. Smooth and fruity; fig and cherry notes.
Underperforms at the second and third hours. Fading quickly?

On the second day, it welcomes us with a lovely cherry nose again. Ready to drink 10 minutes after serving on the second day.

An interim conclusion is that perhaps it is not really for the very long term and should be consumed before its 10th birthday. If drinking it now, I'd recommend only a short decant 15-20 min (BTW, some sediment is present but not excessive). (1687 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
