Tasted by Ridgerunner on 10/12/2022 & rated 94 points: This is classic Petite Syrah! It is one of our old favorites! And, this is a great bottle from a great vintage! (509 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 3/17/2021 & rated 93 points: Impressive Napa PS from that special Stags Leap fruit (1162 views)
Tasted by hankj on 1/31/2019 & rated 93 points: My bottles have been in perfect cellar conditions from early on. This one was phenomenal, dropped weight and picked up tertiary aroma but still lush and pleasingly structured. It's a testament to the winemaker that one can pick up this bottle in most any decent supermarket on the West Coast for a mid-range price, and cellar it for more than 10 years, and it gets better and better. (2235 views)
Tasted by jerrysvino on 12/19/2018 & rated 87 points: Deep color, gritty, a bit rough, with still some black cherry, high tannins and believe it or not can still use some time. (2132 views)
Tasted by roasted hill on 5/14/2016: deep purple. nose of dark fruit and leather. black raspberry and a hint of blueberry with underlying spice box. tannins fully resolved. overpriced. (6295 views)
Tasted by hankj on 4/27/2016 & rated 91 points: This coming along really nicely - well-integrated now but still plenty of tannin and fruit. Different obviously, but has some of the character of mid-tier BDX with some age on it, some power but smooth too, some similarity in the arc of how the phenols are decomposing. Good now and this wine could go a while longer, resolve a little more and gain some earthier aspects. (6061 views)
Tasted by OldwineinVT on 1/31/2016 & rated 91 points: Color: Beautiful dark purple with thick viscous legs
Nose: Intense... lots of dark, ripe fruit. Spicy with black pepper; some tobacco and leather

Body/flavor: Full bodied; complex flavors of ripe dark fruit and blackberries; tannins present but not overwhelming. Despite 14.3% ABV, alcohol not apparent. Petite Sirah characteristics show through. Has time.

Finish: lingering aftertaste.

Paired with slow cooked, spicy brisket! Definitely matched the food! (5928 views)
Tasted by Martin Ferland on 12/12/2015 & rated 91 points: En carafe 4 heures (5584 views)
Tasted by Canoehead on 8/23/2015 & rated 85 points: The fruit is going already... not a wine for lying down for more than a couple of years IMO. Actually for $50Cdn there are better alternatives out there. (6108 views)
Tasted by Combo on 12/24/2014 & rated 90 points: Dark, rich, ink colored. Still pretty tight tannin structure. Strong blackberry, some anise, smokey finish. Drinking well. Probably should have decanted. (3624 views)
Tasted by bu11itt on 9/26/2014 & rated 91 points: Dark burgundy in the glass with a red rim and long legs. Rich and full bodied. Thick nose of tobacco and leather. Layers of deep tannic complexity and a dry finish. (3272 views)
Tasted by skp88 on 1/12/2014 & rated 87 points: Day 1: A tannic beast. Lot's of flavor, but the tannins are just too much for me as they block out any subtlety or complexity. Day 2: a third of the bottle corked and left on kitchen countertop. Tannins have been tamed and the wine is much more balanced and enjoyable. My one and only bottle, but if I had more I'd leave them alone for 2-3 years (5528 views)
Tasted by daver852 on 11/28/2013 & rated 91 points: Lovely, seductive wine. Very dark color, strong blackberry element in the nose. Quite fragrant. Brambles and spice on the palate; dark fruit on the attack, with some earthy notes on the finish. Just a textboook Petite Sirah, only lacking a bit of depth and lushness on the finish to merit a higher score. But make no mistake - this is good stuff. A bit pricey, but worth it. Highly recommended, and would buy again. Will hold and possibly improve for another five years. (5187 views)
Tasted by hankj on 7/8/2013 & rated 91 points: coming around very nicely from 2 years ago, when I doubted it could be as good as the 2005. Now it's right on par! (6212 views)
Tasted by winedr on 6/27/2013 & rated 92 points: - Medium forming legs. It's balanced with a medium/full body. Polished texture with a medium finish - I think this wine is fantastic and always consistent. Have tried other petit syrahs and always come back to this one. Blackberry on the nose with silky tannins and medium to long finish. Always keep this wine in the cellar. (5203 views)
Tasted by fournet on 6/20/2013 & rated 87 points: Tried over three hours. I have had better vintages of Stags Leap Petite Sirah. The tannins are more prominent, probably due to slightly less acidity than is typical? Also a bit thinner since the blackberry characteristic is not as prominent. Not as big as is typical of a Petite Sirah. Probably not age worthy. (5161 views)
Tasted by Jsmithbim on 6/9/2013 & rated 90 points: This wine is always a sure bet and once again it did not disappoint. Fruit forward (think cranberry and strawberry) and bone dry. My experience was not a heavy of a wine as others mentioned. Drank right out of the bottle and could have opened up a bit before consuming. (3199 views)
Tasted by ecola on 1/5/2013 & rated 90 points: Big dark fruit and starting to show a little earth. Full body without being too over the top. (4368 views)
Tasted by RBOND on 12/24/2012 & rated 91 points: Sweet and fruity. Never lost its nose through the entire bottle. We had it with salmon and it made the meal pop. THis bottle had a bunch off sediment. A truely great Petite Syrah (3436 views)
Tasted by rpontual on 12/22/2012 & rated 90 points: Well balanced now, but still young. Perhaps a couple of years in the cellar will make a big difference (3395 views)
Tasted by stickmanparty on 12/1/2012 & rated 90 points: Decant first (3775 views)
Tasted by danershi@gmail.com on 11/29/2012 & rated 95 points: Sumptuous blackberry and blueberry. Dark and inky. A blockbuster! (3634 views)
Tasted by rgrosz6 on 11/12/2012 & rated 91 points: This was the blackest wine I've had this year. Very big wine, tons of black fruit, very intense. Nice long finish, balanced, a real crowd pleaser. Definitely needs red meat. (2777 views)
Tasted by dontime on 11/7/2012: I've been on a PS rolls the last few nights. Another tooth stainer. Almost black, thick and rich. Flavorful fruits. Food friendly. If scoring 90-92. (2658 views)
Tasted by Litigater2 on 11/7/2012 & rated 92 points: I love this wine. I have never, not even once, been dissatisfied with a bottle of this wine. Big, full, dark, and very flavorful. (2719 views)

Petite Sirah

Varietal character (Appellation America) | P.S. I Love You: A Petite Sirah Advocacy Organization

Petite Sirah is a variety of red wine grape grown in France, California, Israel and Australia. Recently, wineries located in Washington State's Yakima Valley, Maryland, Arizona, West Virginia, Mexico, Chile's Colchagua Valley and Maipo Valley, and Ontario's Niagara Peninsula have also produced wines from Petite Sirah grapes. Though developed in France, it is nearly extinct there as of 2002, hanging on in limited plantings in the Isère and Ardêche regions of the Rhône Valley and in Palette, a tiny appellation in Provence. It is the main grape known in the US and Israel as Petite Sirah with over 90% of the California plantings labeled "Petite Sirah" being Durif grapes; the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms recognizes "Durif" and "Petite Sirah" as interchangeable synonyms referring to the same grape. The grape originated as a cross of Syrah pollen germinating a Peloursin plant. On some occasions, Peloursin and Syrah vines may be called Petite Sirah, usually because the varieties are extremely difficult to distinguish in old age.

The 'petite' in the name of this grape refers to the size of its berries and not the vine, which is particularly vigorous. The leaves are large with a bright green upper surface and paler green lower surface. The grape forms tightly packed clusters that can be susceptible to rotting in rainy environments. The small berries creates a high skin to juice ratio which can produce very tannic wines if the juice goes through an extended maceration period. In the presence of new oak barrels the wine can develop an aroma of melted chocolate.

Petite Sirah produces dark, inky colored wines that are relatively acidic with firm texture and mouth feel. The bouquet has herbal and black pepper overtones, with plum and blackberry flavors on the palate. Compared to Syrah, the wine is noticeably more dark and purplish in color. The wines are very tannic with aging ability that can eclipse 20 years in the bottle.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
