Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 82 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Neecies on 2/26/2024: Excellent. Plenty of elegant fruit and stuffing; doesn't show its age. (276 views)
Tasted by redz on 3/22/2022 & rated 91 points: Tasted a little muddy after Terry Hoage Paso syrah. Likely peaked. (800 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 2/14/2022: Loved this. Blackberry fruit, clove, a hint of sage; elegantly powerful concentration and integrated tannins that poured like silk on our palates. 14.2% alcohol didn't show. Possibly the best California syrah I've ever had. (955 views)
Tasted by Wine_in_HD on 12/22/2021 & rated 88 points: Bought this bottle off of WineBid because I liked another bottle of this wine so well. What a difference in bottles. Not nearly as good as the previous bottle. (998 views)
Tasted by Wine_in_HD on 9/25/2021 & rated 94 points: Still going strong at 14 years old. (1123 views)
Tasted by Bwalter17 on 9/11/2020 & rated 91 points: Aged nicely. Still has a few years left. Inky purple. Well integrated tannins giving it a smooth and slightly silky mouthfeel. Luscious fruit with clove, blackberry, black pepper. A little heat on the finish - DuMol syrahs seem consistently to be a little higher in alcohol than I prefer. (1188 views)
Tasted by NY Wino on 10/26/2019 & rated 93 points: Deep purple color, big nose of spice and dark fruit, this wine is drinking beautifully after a 2 hour decant. Delicious fruit, smooth tannins, great spice. Holding up beautifully. (1199 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 11/6/2018 & rated 93 points: In peak form. Dense, brooding, almost black in the glass with black raspberry fruit, bay leaf, white pepper and just the right amount of funk. Sensuous, silky mouthfeel added to the thrills. (1322 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 11/5/2018 & rated 92 points: Very nice peppery Syrah with a fair bit of burgundy funk. Dry and resolved. (1372 views)
Tasted by mattdathan on 4/3/2016 & rated 92 points: Silky smooth - lovely (3246 views)
Tasted by joraesque on 11/22/2015 & rated 88 points: Native yeast for sure, and an overall profile that seemed to be akin to that of a wine at the end of a refermentation stage. Perfectly drinkable but quite disappointing based on my high expectations. Perhaps Wine Spectator is right and this should be consumed by 2016? If this is classic DuMOL then I shall pass next time. 14.2% ABV. (3198 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 10/13/2015 & rated 92 points: Dark purple. Opened and finished the bottle. Blueberry, minerals, grilled meat, with ripe dark fruit, deep, rich, big but not sweet or overdone. Well made. Drinking great now. (3205 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 9/20/2015 & rated 93 points: Dark purple in color. Cedar, tobacco, eucalyptus, and grilled meat with a terrific nose. Black cherry, plum, and red currents. Excellent depth, rich, balanced, and a long finish. I like this with the extra age. Has improved and matured but by no means too old. My last bottle. Will not be in a rush to drink my other vintages too early. (3009 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 2/20/2015 & rated 92 points: Interesting. Last bottle, and quite different from the others; a load of barnyard funk on this one, from beginning to end, and it's quite nice. I don't recall ever finding that note of funk on a DuMOL syrah, but it's working. (3435 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 4/9/2014: A much better bottle than the last. Classic DuMol syrah notes perhaps from a weaker vintage. (2665 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 4/1/2014 & rated 89 points: Very tight and not giving up much! Will wait 1-2 years on my last bottle. (2300 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 3/11/2014 & rated 90 points: Aromas of smoke, dark berry, meat, and spice. Consistent flavors with nice balance throughout a lengthy finish. Less fruit than 16 months ago. (2364 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 1/3/2014 & rated 92 points: Based on my previous two tasting notes, I wasn't necessarily expecting to see improvement, but this has moved towards a more silky-textured blue-fruit based profile, which is all to the good. I think there is a reasonable chance that more improvement is in store with a couple more years in the cellar. (2551 views)
Tasted by jbro on 11/25/2013 & rated 92 points: The community underrates this a bit. Second night. Deep purple, medium legs. Blackberry, meat, soy and motor oil on the nose. Heavy, dark fruit on the palate with balanced acidity and tannins; not sweet- like slightly under-ripe blackberries which you can't stop eating even though you wish you had some sugar to sprinkle on top. On the back of the tongue on the way down you want to smack your lips against a finish that you wish was sweeter as it goes on and on. Wish I had more than the single bottle. (2355 views)
Tasted by tgkswine on 11/24/2013 & rated 89 points: Drank over two nights. Big dark fruit and pepper and spice. This was declining on day two. (1548 views)
Tasted by fingers on 11/16/2013 & rated 88 points: Notes after two hours in decanter. Very dark ruby color with a solid meniscus, 90% opaque and thin, albeit very slow legs on the glass. Profound and tense nose with lots of spice, black fruit, smoked meat, and toasty oak. No bramble present. Palate displays some identity via the presence of earth and slight funk. Medium body with a lot of alcohol to go with the dark oak and mellow, but plentiful tannins. Medium length finish. Maybe a bit over-extracted, at least for my taste. If I had more, I would probably wait on it for a year or three. 4+11+16+7 = 88 (1938 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 11/10/2013 & rated 90 points: Purple. Nose of black fruit, lavender and cigar box. Still moderately tannic, nice balance , drank over two nights. Good both times. Really very solid wine. (1596 views)
Tasted by NY Wino on 10/13/2013 & rated 90 points: Decanted for 1 hour. Rich purple color, big nose of fruit and spice, the wine is drinking nicely although there was some heat in the finish. (1518 views)
Tasted by fingers on 1/29/2013 & rated 88 points: Exponentially different (better) after a day open in the pantry so it really needs a long decant to soften up. It was mostly oak and alcohol on the first night and although some of the pepper disappeared with the alcohol, it felt overall like a 2% drop in abv. overnight.
Very dark ruby color, 90% opaque and light sediment. Bouquet offers blackberry, raspberry, red currant, strawberry jam, and dark smoke. Easy tannins, soft acidity. Dry, medium-long finish. 5+10+16+7 = 88 (2670 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 1/13/2013 & rated 93 points: California Syrah or CDP (with some Whites to Start) (Beebe House): Tasted blind. Guessed Syrah. Last bottle of tasting so notes were poor. On nose, black cherry, black raspberry, cherry, meat & charred barrel. On palate, stil fruit primary with similar profile to nose with medium acids, tannins grippy on the long finish. I really enjoyed this and would buy. Very big so old world fans would not enjoy. 93- (3027 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
