Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 94.1 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 106 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Kbentley007 on 4/5/2024 & rated 96 points: Decanted for about an hour. Cork didn’t survive opening. Very little sediment. Still good acidity though so plenty of life left. Tannins well integrated. Still plenty of fruit. Glad I finally opened this bottle. (148 views)
Tasted by kennyd on 12/31/2023 & rated 96 points: This wine was great with our prime filets on New Years Eve. It is in a perfect place No need to decant. Hold or drink, leaning more towards drink, although it is quite clearly constructed for aging. One note: the cork virtually disintegrated. The wine was unharmed. I have to admit I'm a bit concerned about the other five bottles we have in our cellar. I will just be careful when I open them. (256 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 11/11/2023 & rated 97 points: Similar to prior notes after a 2 hour double decant; outstanding, drink or hold, no rush (546 views)
Tasted by Handy1 on 8/6/2023 & rated 97 points: Decanted three hours. Dark dark fruit. Blueberries maybe some black cherry and plums. Tannins still present but not obtrusive. Drinking very well now (605 views)
Tasted by evanlyall on 4/15/2023 & rated 95 points: Was worried about a semi soft cork but wine is intact. Big wine drinking perfectly now in my opinion. Leather and chocolate notes so says my friend. Poetry never dissappoints. (742 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 12/3/2022 & rated 97 points: Similar to prior notes, except that it is now in its prime drinking window; outstanding, drink or hold, no rush (1136 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 9/10/2022 & rated 96 points: Ruby red with red fruit and plush mouthfeel. Long length and pleasant finish. (1267 views)
Tasted by gteran76 on 5/8/2021 & rated 94 points: Excellent wine, dark ruby in color, firm tannins, big body, complex, balanced. Persistent finish. It will only get better as time goes by... (2378 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 5/8/2021 & rated 96 points: Similar to prior note after a 2 hour double decant; outstanding, but still a little young, drink or preferably hold for another year or 2 (common thought for me on the 07s) (2038 views)
Tasted by Elkcims on 4/12/2021 & rated 97 points: 1 hour decant, very elegant mouthfeel: a bouquet of blueberry, black cherry, anise, medium bodied, soft minerality, light tannins present at finish. Wish I had a few more at the release price as this appears to easily have more life ahead. (1927 views)
Tasted by Brolawa on 3/13/2021 & rated 94 points: A very big wine. A rich nose of stewed plums and wood reminiscent of higher-end CdP. Palate was a beautiful mix of tobacco, earth and black fruit.

Drank this with a 2009 Dana Helms Vineyard. I probably preferred the style of the Dana, but this is still an excellent wine.

This wine was ready to go immediately upon opening but still let it decant for roughly an hour. (1800 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 7/25/2020 & rated 96 points: Double decanted for 2 hrs, deep ruby, dark fruit & vanilla on the nose, black cherry on the palate, med. tannins, long finish; outstanding, drink or hold (2377 views)
Tasted by meatbomb013 on 1/23/2020 & rated 95 points: Wines like this remind me of why love California cabernet blends. Dark fruit and spice on the nose. A nice plush mouth-feel with fine, well integrated tannins. Blueberry, blackberry and a hint of cassis combined with some vanilla and spice. Still in primary phase although getting close to secondary cabernet characteristics. Enough acidity to prolong life.
Great wine now and for 10 plus years. Don’t expect it to get considerably better but will drink well for 10’yewrs or more.
I wish I had more to try later. (1962 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 12/30/2019 & rated 95 points: From mag, similar to prior notes after a 2 hr double decant; delicious, drink or hold, just entering its plateau (2073 views)
Tasted by Ranjan on 8/26/2019 & rated 95 points: Amazing wine, well balanced, fruit forward nose. (2241 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 5/25/2019 & rated 95 points: Similar to prior note; delicious, drink or preferably hold (2409 views)
Tasted by hawkeye54 on 4/29/2019 & rated 96 points: PNP. Drinking great. Typical Cali bdx blend with excellent balance of fruit, tannin and acidity. Seems to have many years of excellent drinking ahead of it. No hurry to drink, but no need to wait any longer in my opinion. (1990 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 12/28/2018 & rated 95 points: From memory of having at dinner last week at Angelo's Pizza. Double decanted for an hour, deep ruby, black cherry, med. tannins, long finish; delicious, drink or hold (just entering its window) (2101 views)
Tasted by sunnylea57 on 3/2/2018 & rated 94 points: This has come a long way since my last bottle. It’s in a great place after an hour in the decanter. A plush, full mouthful of sweet blue and black fruit, with a dollop of vanilla, and dusty sweet tannins. More right bank merlot-like than Cab Sauv, and I mean that as a compliment. Delicious and a hit with my lunch guests. I’d love to find more... (2966 views)
Tasted by Alberta66 on 2/4/2018 & rated 93 points: Visual: deep ruby color, completely opaque right to the edge, slightest hint of garnet (red/brick) at the rim. Indicates it's holding up well at 11 years old.
Nose: rich, fully ripe dark berry fruits (black berry, etc.). Soft secondary notes (e.g. oak/vanilla) and a few tertiary notes (ageing) starting to present.
Taste: the fruit comes through loud & clear. Rich and ripe, not cloying. There's enough acidity to keep it balanced (a bit more might be nice). Tannins are soft. Oak is balanced. Long pleasant finish. Overall a V good/Excellent wine (though I'd want a bit more finesse at this price point). (2561 views)
Tasted by Coachron13 on 12/31/2017 & rated 94 points: Another great Poetry vintage. Fruit is still very prominent, tannins are resolving. Probably drinking near peak now, but not close to fading, probably 5+ years at this level still. (2399 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 7/29/2017: Dark ruby garnet.
Ripe luscious blue fruit with light toasty oak.
Super delicious with great balance. A great party wine if you could stomach the bill (3281 views)
Tasted by MatLot on 8/13/2016 & rated 96 points: Plus grand que dominus, wow tout un vin ! A+++ (4752 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 7/4/2016: Really quite pretty.
Dark ruby. Luscious blueberry blackberry flavors, with some sweet tea on the finish. Perhaps could use a bit more acidity, but otherwise Beautiful balance in a big Cali style. (4050 views)
Tasted by KeithSurg on 6/13/2016 & rated 94 points: Similar to initial notes. This has help up well, but would not hold much longer. Very nicely integrated. (4154 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
