Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 51 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by simpen9 on 1/6/2024 & rated 95 points: Otroligt av en snart 30-årig Geyserville, lagra dessa!

Utvecklad doft och mycket komplex smak, mogna röda och mörka bär. (337 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 4/22/2022: Bill's. Silky red fruit, lighter bodied than the '92 before it and it acquired a lot of caramel as it sat in the glass. Excellent. (1283 views)
Tasted by ocwineo on 11/12/2021 & rated 90 points: Ample fruit with soft tannins this well balanced wine is still holding up- drank with a selection of California Cabernets-almost everyone in our wine group thought it was a cab (1554 views)
Tasted by Tgood on 7/16/2020 & rated 96 points: Cellared at 55 since purchase upon release. Medium translucent surprisingly brightish ruby w pigment thinning ambering at rim w 2sh mm meniscus. Now the fun starts fresh pure thinly concentrated cherry raspberry cinnamon black tea notes on nose echoed on palate w lively focusing acids and clandestine tannins that come out of the background only at close leaving a nice astringency inviting this drinker to take another drag. Super juice and tremendous vindication for keeping a cellar. (2103 views)
Tasted by ocwineo on 2/15/2020 & rated 90 points: Surprise surprise as this wine is alive and well-a little past it’s prime but plenty of fruit, smooth, soft tannins and slight musty smell. Tastes like a cab and enjoyed by all. (2250 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 5/19/2019 & rated 90 points: Definitely still in its drinking window, As is often said to be the case with older zin & zin blends, however, it’s more like a claret than a zinfandel. Subdued fruit notes are woven with earth, button mushroom, and black tea, atop silky smooth tannins. Just a wisp of spice on the close. A nice way to start off a few 25th anniversary year wines. (2431 views)
Tasted by Adam T 12 on 3/2/2019 & rated 90 points: A nice surprise at 25 years old. Really nice nose. Black cherries, raspberry on the palate. Fruit is definitely still there with a mature undertone. Drink up and enjoy. (1951 views)
Tasted by Jaber on 1/14/2018 & rated 90 points: Still alive. Nicely balanced. (2320 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 12/26/2017: Not surprisingly, this is still in very good form. The exuberance of youth has faded from the fruit, and what remains is a fully mature, but still quite fresh, medium-bodied wine with soul and grace. The more of these older Ridges I drink, the more I'm (even more!) convinced that Paul Draper is a genius's genius, and his palate, and growing philosophy are the stuff of legend. Continued to unfold over the course of a two hour dinner, but in a subtle, almost linear way. The color is holding fast, though this is clearly on the backside of its peak now, so drink up within the next 6-10 years (depending on how cold your cellar is). 14,3% abv. A joy to drink. recommended+

PnP, served non-blind; cork and fill in exc. condition. (2920 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 9/10/2017 & rated 92 points: Another beautiful, mature Ridge Zin. Firehouse brick red appearance. Deep, penetrating bouquet. Bottle aged cherries, pickled strawberries, sous bois, au jus, and leather aromas. Full bodied, resinous, and expressively long, the palate displays impressive fruit purity and a glyceriny texture. Crushed rocks fill the lovely finish. Long aftertaste. (2194 views)
Tasted by Georgebazil on 5/27/2017 & rated 93 points: Old bottle from cellar, initially uninspiring, but opened up an hour plus later
Lovely Berry Fresh Fruit, but with a bordeaux maturity, was a big surprise as I thought it would be past it's best, finish was long spicy and heavenly,
Just goes to show always try your old bottles, sometimes it can be amazing
Definitely Zinfandel can be great when old, absolutely gorgeous!!!! (2297 views)
Tasted by James Kim on 5/1/2016 & rated 93 points: From memory. Drank this with Wes, Matt, Brandon and crew. Double-decanted. Beautiful dark fruit with fresh tobacco, a hint of dill, herbs, and earth. Elegant but still with moderately full weight. Unlike the 1989 Trentadue, this was more about fruit rather than being claret-like. But still very lovely. (1408 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 4/9/2015 & rated 92 points: Sarsaparilla, cocoa, caramel, red zinger tea, strawberry. Oak is resolved, a touch herbal, faintly meaty, still fresh despite everything else. A great bottle. (4458 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 12/19/2014 & rated 90 points: Leather, cedar, jerky bouquet. Still large framed and savory in the mouth, smoke, cocoa, orange peel. Not the greatest old Geyserville but tasty. (4530 views)
Tasted by Doc90 on 12/18/2014 & rated 92 points: Bottomless nose of classic saddle leather. Saddle leather palate with earthy nuances of damp moss and wild sage. Long finish. (4068 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/22/2014 & rated 89 points: Slightly past its prime, but this charmer offered a lot of earth, spice and tobacco character. I remember this from years ago. The fruit is not what it used to be. But most of us are not what we used to be either. Drink up. (4923 views)
Tasted by Bisty on 3/23/2014 & rated 86 points: Ridge Zinfandel 1994-2010 (Brussels): Brick colour. Very developed on the nose, dark fruit but gives a clumsy impression with a heavy mouthfeel and an unwanted woody impression. (5097 views)
Tasted by elledeca on 3/21/2014: Ridge Zinfandels vertical: crumbly cork in both bottles. fruity and still going, but I prefer the Lytton (3090 views)
Tasted by GalvezGuy on 2/17/2014 & rated 92 points: Showing really well for a 19 year old field blend. Great nose of blueberry, cherry, flowers, hints of pepper and tobacco. On the palate lush but light with black cherry, raspberry, tobacco, blueberry, pepper. Nice balance on the finish with a little bit of grip that made me believe that well stored bottles should have some more life in them. (2323 views)
Tasted by pkatz on 10/27/2013 & rated 88 points: Showing some age but pleasant. (2596 views)
Tasted by jshearer on 5/25/2013: No formal notes, but this was showing very nicely. An elegant and still-balanced zin. (2727 views)
Tasted by Darren747 on 10/24/2012 & rated 93 points: Sweet fruit nose but not at all jammy. Well integrated smoky oak notes. Elegant on the palate, beautifully balanced with creamy strawberry and raspberry fruit and spicy tobacco layered with cinnamon. Oak is very well handled adding complexity and interest. There's a refreshing acidity and very light, soft tannin. Delicious wine with a long finish. (3209 views)
Tasted by unionst on 7/26/2012 & rated 95 points: How long does it take to turn a spicy zin blend into a complex and round perfectly balanced wine? I am guessing a little under 18 years. What a beautiful, full and complete wine. Lots of fruit and spice and earth on the nose. The palate is a blueberry, cherry and red raspberry Creme tart...just beautiful!

I am biased toward 94 Geyserville as it was part of my initial wine education. Coming back to the 94 after all of these years was a wonderful reward for both the patience to save one and to my wine journey in general. thank you, Paul Draper! (3468 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 8/23/2011 & rated 90 points: Tastes more like an older southern rhone than a zin. This wine is showing very well tonight, with black fruit, cassis, earth, pepper and smoke flavors, smooth texture, nice acidity and balance. (4078 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 6/17/2011 & rated 79 points: Bonham's and Butterfield Pre-auction tasting (San Francisco): Over the hill. Lost fruit, drying. Didn't show well today. 79 (4864 views)

Ridge

Producer website | Wikipedia

Ridge Vineyards is a California winery specializing in premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay wines. Ridge produces wine at two winery locations in northern California. The original winery facilities are located at an elevation of 2,300 feet (700 m) on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA near Cupertino, California. The other Ridge winery facilities are at Lytton Springs in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of Sonoma County.

Ridge Geyserville

(Ridge Spring 2012 Wine Club notes)

In 1966, Ridge made its first Geyserville from a strip of river rock and clay soils along the abandoned San Francisco and Northern Pacific tracks. Over time, we have added two adjoining vineyards on this same defined site. Each vintage is distinct but typical flavor characteristics include the blackest of blackberry fruit, ripe plum, cedar, and a distinctive mineral quality.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
