Tasted by gharter on 3/15/2024 & rated 92 points: Time has been good to this wine. No decant needed. Opens with with blackberry, blueberry, spice and a touch of cedar on the nose. Lots of flavor with black and blue fruits, anise, spice , vanilla and black pepper. Soft tannin in a smooth finish. In a really good drinking window, (242 views)
Tasted by Charlie C on 1/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Decanted for 2.5 hours. Vibrant dark cherry color. Black cherries, tobacco, anise on the nose. Lush, intense fruit, black cherries, blackberries, tobacco, anise. Great texture. Still big tannins. Great acidity and balance. There is a certain sweetness to the fruit. Finishes long and dark fruited. The wine becomes softer and sweeter with food, the tannins soften (the class Cab pairing, a New York Strip and baked potato). Develops a lovely texture, soft, almost plush. No heat. Drink over the next 10 years. (1185 views)
Tasted by trippingturtles on 6/18/2021 & rated 91 points: PnP. Round, dark fruit. Heavy mouthfeel. Good amount of sediment. (1472 views)
Tasted by gharter on 11/27/2020 & rated 92 points: Improved after a 30 minute decant. Aromatic with blackberry, spice, anise, and a touch of cedar. Medium body. Flavors of black and blue fruits, anise, spice , vanilla and black pepper. Not showing any tertiary character yet.
The tannins have softened nicely leading to a smooth finish. (1665 views)
Tasted by gharter on 9/22/2020 & rated 92 points: Time has been good to this wine. Needed a 30 minute decant, them blossomed. Beautiful aromas with blackberry, blueberry, spice and a touch of cedar. Great mouthfeel. On the palate, black and blue fruits, anise, spice , vanilla and black pepper. The tannins have softened nicely leading to a smooth finish. In a really good drinking window, no hurry. (1793 views)
Tasted by dserrano on 5/22/2020 & rated 98 points: Fantastic ,.. nice subtle oakiness unusually for California (1863 views)
Tasted by gharter on 11/1/2019 & rated 92 points: As expected, improving with age. Decanted 2 hours, I would not PnP. Great nose with blackberry, blueberry, spice and a little cedar. Nice mouthfeel with black and blue fruits, anise, spice , vanilla and black pepper. The tannins are starting to soften nicely, but doesn't shorten the finish. Starting to get to a really good place. Probably better in another year or two. (1775 views)
Tasted by BRR on 10/21/2019: After drinkning, I checked on when I had my prior bottle and it was almost two years ago to the day. I didn't rate then, as it was closed and way too young. I'll withhold today again, as I just don't think I can easily assign points. Very dark in appearance with purple bubbles when vigorously decanted, so the saturation is there for sure. Initially a very shy nose with black fruit, maybe a little smoke. The palate was tannic and drying, but with lots lurking under there. Note to self: no touch for 5 years at least. (1517 views)
Tasted by RichardP on 2/27/2019 & rated 92 points: No detailed notes, but this is improving as it ages. This opens up over a couple of hours to show rich red and black berry fruit with spicy notes on the medium to long finish, with strong tannins and good acidity. This is early in its drinking window and should continue to improve. (1845 views)
Tasted by gharter on 8/5/2018 & rated 90 points: PnP, should have decanted. a little tight initially. Nice nose with blackberry, blueberry, spice and a little cedar. Medium bodied with black and blue fruits, anise, spice and ending with some oak and black pepper. The tannins showed more in the finish than I expected. Definitely a food wine. Needs a few more years to show its best. (2101 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 4/22/2018 & rated 91 points: When I pop the cork on this wine, it was dark and saturated, with a colors of dark purple & blue, l thought the wine would really be intense, and in the glass, the same was true, a really rich appearance. On the palate much like before, the wine really never opened up. It was OK but rather ordinary and lacking the depth and intensity that I anticipated. Tart black and blueberry fruit tannic and acidic. A 90+ wine, but there's not a whole lot more to say about it in my estimation. It Would probably show better with a meal. (2898 views)
Tasted by mflesh on 3/30/2018: A very decent 2013 Napa cab. Made from what appears to be a combo of St. Helena and Howell Mtn fruit, this one has the black and blueberry core, cinnamon baking spice front, full bodied middle and finish, with some black pepper spice and sweeter almost toasted oak finish. This was built to be a 'classic' Napa cab, and that is exactly what is here. Not exactly complex, but was a nice wine that will age 10 years and do well. (2099 views)
Tasted by BRR on 10/16/2017: Night one, with no decant, this was so tight and shut down that I actually didn't finish more than a couple of sips with the rest going back into the bottle. Night two after just being under a lightly re-inserted cork, this was at least showing something in the way of nice, dark fruit. Still quite tannic, I think this has good stuffing, but I'm not going back for at least 5 years. NR (2642 views)
Tasted by Cabernetking on 10/16/2017 & rated 93 points: I found the body and texture to be excellent. Classic Napa cabernet with big fruit and silky in them mouth. I am a fan.

Enjoyed at Flemings in Omaha, Will be buying more. (2938 views)
Tasted by csimm on 10/10/2017 & rated 90 points: Same as last year's TN. It started out a little restrained, with a classical profile overall and some seemingly nice components of a frame to hold the red and black currant fruit in proper place. After about an hour, it got a little plumy. When it neared to room temperature as we reached the end of consumption (after about two hours of being open), its delivery was somewhat flat and dead.

88-90 points tops. No more for me on this label. On to something else. For those holding bottles, drink now with a quick slow O2 or some swirling in the glass (I wouldn't decant) and try to maintain service at cellar temperature. Holding for a couple of years may be ok, but I wouldn't go too long with this wine. Definitely not built for the long haul.

Served alongside a 2013 Fleury Estate BDX, which was superior to the Trujillo in just about every way, especially depth. (3926 views)
Tasted by Gestalted on 8/10/2017 & rated 90 points: Massively tannic! But underneath you get pronounced blueberry and espresso. I like my napa cabs young but this really needs time. Not too dissimilar to a young Insignia but at half the price. (2433 views)
Tasted by brianofthevine on 7/22/2017 & rated 94 points: Great wine. Blackberry/boysenberry fruit with an earthy core to it of tar, leather, and black licorice. Firm tannins, long finish. (2318 views)
Tasted by RichardP on 6/8/2017 & rated 91 points: Xylene (the smell of a ballpoint pen) and plum on the nose. On the palate, black cherry, currant, blackberry, and notes of cocoa and earth on the medium finish, with light tannins and good acidity. This may integrate and improve some, but it's not a mistake to drink it now. This is a credible successor to the old Karl Lawrence Cabernet, but the higher price makes it less of a bargain than its predecessor. Fair to good value at a little over $60. (1789 views)
Tasted by brianofthevine on 3/2/2017 & rated 92 points: Had at their tasting room in St. Helena. Nice wine here with red/black cherry and dark chocolate with some earth notes. Nice smooth tannins, should be great over time. (2089 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 2/26/2017 & rated 92 points: Nice wine. Gorgeous, rich purple color that gets to be more ruby red near the rim. Nice nose but on the palate restrained notes of dark fruit, berry and dried currant fruit. I'm sure that this will be a better wine, but unlike many of its 2013 brethren, it needs to age a bit more. I like it and if you drink it anytime soon, let it breath. (2589 views)
Tasted by csimm on 9/16/2016 & rated 92 points: Lazy Bear Restaurant SF (San Francisco): Tasted at a friend's before dinner. Paired with white ghost pepper salami and rich/salty hard Parmesan. This wine was MUCH better with food; as a stand alone drinker, it felt a little lost at this stage of its life.

PnP with restrained notes of black currant, cedar, mulch, grey fines (decomposed granite), and some dust. Not astringent thankfully, but fairly tight. Didn't show its hand too much throughout an hour of swirling in the glass. Black fruit driven, fashioned in a more classical style overall.

Lacked a little depth, with a medium-bodied finish. Clipped on the back end due to its youth, but some black fruit and dust pushed through, keeping the flavors going for a bit. Acid and balance were decent. Overall an "ok" Cabernet, priced a little high for what it is. There is some quality there, but it was a tad forgettable.

90-92 point potential in possibly another year. Try again in late 2017/early 2018, especially in hopes the fruit fans out more and gains some depth. (4438 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 8/12/2016 & rated 92 points: All the elements are there for a great wine but the wine seemed way too young and tightly coiled this time. As others noted, there is tons of dark chocolate, tobacco, earthy elements and minerality. Couldn't get a great read on the fruit as the dark elements overwhelmed it. Tons of structure and a long finish. Look forward to my other bottles after more cellar time. Classic 2013 intensity IMO (2434 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 4/14/2016 & rated 92 points: Classic, smooth but concentrated Napa Cabernet Blend. The nose is clean, with black fruit, tobacco, leather and herbs. The palate is dry, with a smooth mouthfeel; medium acidity, medium (+) tannins and medium to medium (+) alcohol. Medium (+) body, flavor intensity and length. Youthful, but already drinking well. (2589 views)
Tasted by Robert N's Wine on 4/9/2016 & rated 95 points: Beautiful dark purple with a full aroma and long legs. The nose is full bodied with plum, blackberry, and smoke. The mouth-feel is rich and smooth with a beautiful tannin structure. The finish is quite long and does not fade into nothingness, but rather builds as the tannins linger in a lovely way. The wine opens as it aerates, and the fruit builds within the glass. (2438 views)
Tasted by JDB on 2/14/2016: Michael Trujillo:
Stunning vintage that definitely exceeded our expectations.

"The 2013 Cabernet is full, well rounded and giving with a broad expression of aromas and flavors. Bold dark fruits are ample and plush coming forth black cherry, plum, dark chocolate and a hint of sweet cedar spice. Rich, smooth and refined on the palate continuously unfolding with each swirl and sip.

The generous flavors come up boldly, but are silky and mouth filling. Generous with black fruit flavors, hints of dark chocolate and a touch of toasty caramel and spice. Seamless balance of oak, tannins and alcohol all give way to a long lingering, complex finish on this beautiful 2013 Cabernet. A wine to enjoy now and well into the next several years."

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
