Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 32 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Praxis on 2/24/2023 & rated 93 points: Clean and brilliant golden yellow in appearance with a beautiful nose of ripe pineapples and stone fruits with a noticeable dried grassy herbaceous overtones. The palate is somewhere in between the fuller end of medium-bodied and the lighter side of full-bodied, quite concentrated and viscous with ample amount of refreshing acidity that keeps this interesting and not like canned peach syrup. The flavor profile includes candied yellow fruits (but in my opinion it's doesn't really taste like but rather somewhere in-between the essential flavors and characteristics of very ripe yellow peaches and golden pineapples), fresh juices from sweet ripe yellow pomelos mixed with lots of new clover flower honey with some straw, Botrytis-inflected characteristics, and finishes with a hint of rich vanilla cream tempered with just the right amount of refreshing acidity. A very lovely and memorable Barsac with a very controlled and genteel personality. Enjoyed a glass tonight chilled, popped and poured from a 375 ml. bottle. Will have to revisit tomorrow to see if there is any further developments in this. Day 2: Much more integrated with rich fruits dominating the honey component which dominant the taste profile yesterday, the vanilla cream is not present tonight but over all, it's still quite a remarkable experience.  Tasted by Bagwhat on 11/24/2022 & rated 90 points: Popped and poured, so will reevaluate after a night or two in the fridge. But this is pure sticky sweet apricot with a bit of orange zest. Honeyed and cloying, and lacking in acid for me. Medium finish is unfortunately clipped before it feels like it could get interesting.

Edit: I needed to give this a fair shot. It really tightened up by day 2, and the citrus becomes more prominent and floral details emerge. The finish has lengthened and added spices to its character. Will keep following, lesson learned!

On day 3, there is a lengthy finish that adds a creamy texture to the mix. As such we now have ginger apricot orange flowers and this wine is really coming into its own. (1937 views)
Tasted by T.E.D. on 4/23/2022 & rated 91 points: A straight forward and well balanced Sauternes. Claims notes of honey apricots with touches of orange marmalade and candied fruit. (2821 views)
Tasted by richard.presser on 1/5/2022 & rated 90 points: Good level of richness with wonderful balance. Drinking nicely from the half. (3155 views)
Tasted by aero on 10/17/2021 & rated 92 points: Excellent young Doisy-Vedrines - not too saccharine at this age. Each sip shows something different, even fresh cold coca-cola or hints of honeyed banana. Looking forward to the complexity age brings. (3477 views)
Tasted by richard.presser on 6/18/2021 & rated 90 points: Marmalade richness though restrained. A lovely dessert wine. Classic Sauternes structure. Fine with just a little lifted richness. Medium length. A simple joy. (2800 views)
Tasted by SpenceP on 12/18/2020 & rated 94 points: Apricots, poached peaches, spicy pears, orange peel, ginger, lemon, caramel, honey, almond, a hint of pineapple and maybe nutmeg, with a modestly long aftertaste that I suspect will get longer with age. Really quite lovely. Should be a treat for a long time. (3288 views)
 Tasted by JHo_MS on 11/14/2020 & rated 94 points: fabulous (2983 views)
Tasted by richard.presser on 8/22/2020 & rated 91 points: Very fine. Apricot, honey, marmalade cut. Good length. Fine and elegant, not big rich and powerful. A lovely wine. Drank from a half. Now-2028
Developing richness with breathing. More marmalade than apricot. (2730 views)
Tasted by vide on 4/18/2020 & rated 93 points: I think Jeff Leve is right (see below). The fact is that Sauternes really is best drunk young (1-6 years) or old (12-20 years). In between, it becomes fat and loses definition (like us).

This wine has not lost definition: wonderfully lifted nose of a spice and fruit, somewhere between nutmeg and mango (but it the clarity of the lift that matters - almost pungent); beautiful balance on the palate. Some will find the ultimate taste understated expecting something more imposing, but there is a purity of expression in this wine that should compensate for that.
A very fine wine and, as with its neighbour, Daene, most certainly worthy of elevation into the 1. Crus. (3019 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 11/7/2019 & rated 93 points: Elegant, fresh, lifted, tropical fruits and apricots coated with honey, vanilla bean and roasted nuts. The wine is rich, but also energetic, giving it the right balance between its natural sweetness and acidity, (4857 views)
Tasted by Tony Poli on 10/27/2019 & rated 92 points: Smooth, light on its feet, without any cloying sweetness. I’m a bit of a novice with dessert wines, I really liked this. (2398 views)
Tasted by Torchy on 8/11/2019 & rated 90 points: Velvety. Nose with apricot peel, tropical fruit, and hints of acetone. Viscous. Bright and dominant taste of apricot on the palate. Vibrant acid balances the fruit nicely. The wine has high concentration and extreme length. (2628 views)
Tasted by cltean on 7/22/2019 & rated 93 points: Drank from a 375ml bottle. Very light color so age hasn't begun its journey with this wine yet. Beautiful wine with notes of nectar and marmalade. I can't wait to see how this evolve over the coming years. (2465 views)
Tasted by jayw on 7/7/2019: Smoked saffron with refreshing lemon lift. Surprisingly balanced and enjoyable for such a young, inexpensive Sauternes. (2111 views)
Tasted by chuckos77 on 1/5/2019 & rated 90 points: Tasted along side a 14 and felt the 15 was slightly better. Paired with a poached pear dessert and it married nicely. Great sauternes (2402 views)
Tasted by F1NUT on 12/26/2018 & rated 93 points: Lovely dessert wine. Colour is somewhat pale and nose a little shy but the palate is really good. There is a nice but not prominent sweetness to the wine and not at all cloying. The fruit is a lovely mix of ripe pear, quince, melon, perhaps some apricot and maybe nectarine contributing the cleansing acidity. Excellent QPR too. (2109 views)
Tasted by Saxman1984 on 12/25/2018: A lovely dessert wine, not too sweet, with a subtle, but balancing acidity. A Christmas night dessert. Apricot in both the nose and palate. Very enjoyable (2036 views)
Tasted by cupoverflowing1 on 12/7/2018 & rated 95 points: perfect dessert wine; full bodied, honey, floral, no hint of bitter aftertaste. yum (2262 views)
Tasted by Blauweiss on 8/5/2018 & rated 92 points: Lovely, rich, honey and tropical fruits, fine acidity and just the right sweet feeling, good stuff! (3010 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 6/16/2018 & rated 92 points: Tasted after 2015 Doisy Daëne. Rich, big, concnetrated, but there is good acidity and lift. Maybe a little more linear with less finesse, but very good persistence. 91-92+ (2542 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 3/19/2018 & rated 94 points: Bordeaux 2015 in bottle (Zurich Arvi / Singapore UGCB): Lovely aromas of honey, smoke. On the sweeter side for my palate. (5681 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 3/11/2018 & rated 94 points: Tasted at the Arvi Bordeaux 2015 event in Zurich.

Tarte and lemon - let’s just say lemon tarte. Clearly honey. Ripe flavours. Not too sirupy on the palate. Nice long finish. Unfortunately tasted Yquem after this which overshadowed everything else. (2814 views)
Tasted by wineforth on 6/28/2016 & rated 94 points: A barrel sample at the 2015 Lords en primeur tasting. Rated in between Suduiraut and Giroud in points. Good all round, balanced and very long finish. (4142 views)
Tasted by PanosKakaviatos on 4/2/2016: First look at Sauternes 2015 from barrel (Camping du Lac Bordeaux): The nose was quite mentholated, and this sample - as Steve Webb confirmed - was perhaps not the best representative. But the palate showed much substance and vigor and was full bodied without being heavy. Well balanced. A long finish. Excellent potential. (4012 views)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

Le Grand Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac 1855 (Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac) - Read more about Sauternes, Barsac and its wines
– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
