Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 38 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by MJReb on 2/11/2024 & rated 93 points: Chez MG: powerful, tannins, mix of red and black fruit. (1134 views)
Tasted by winetobealive on 1/23/2024 & rated 89 points: Soirée vins compris. Nez un peu vert, mais fin et léger. Peu profond en bouche. Le vin en a toutefois encore sous le pied. 89-90. (1179 views)
Tasted by Teaky on 11/29/2023: Popped and poured over about 2 hours, at first was very closed and muted but after warming up to room temperature and being exposed to air for 30 minutes it opened up with blackberry and what I guess is the graphite pencil lead smell that people associate with Bordeaux, with aggressive swirling the nose was lovely and expressive. Flavors mainly in the dark fruited spectrum, mouthfeel was a bit astringent and drying and low acidity and a medium length finish. This was quite nice and might be a little young as it definitely took some swirling to open up. I'm going to try to wait another 10 years before opening another. (1393 views)
Tasted by brennan18 on 10/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Excellent -- no major difference vs my last note. Decanted for 1 hour and consumed over the next two. (1319 views)
Tasted by Explorateur on 8/11/2023 & rated 94 points: Very nice, classic St Julien. The nose showed right upon opening, the mouth feel suave and round. Blueberries, well balanced toasted oak. Chocolate, berries, earth, forest, mint… so nice. Well balanced. I think this has many years ahead. (1817 views)
Tasted by Shugs_Claret on 8/4/2023 & rated 93 points: Still very primary but open. Dark cherry, violets and mint. Fairly seductive and deep palate with fine tannins. Certainly will improve with time but very enjoyable now with minimal air. (1558 views)
Tasted by Kobracarry on 11/24/2022: Still a little young but really good. Tasted next to the 2005 (2611 views)
Tasted by brennan18 on 11/19/2022 & rated 93 points: decanted for about an hour and then drank over the course of the evening dinner (3.5 hrs). terrific mid-level Bordeaux that doesn't need years of cellaring to be accessible but will also improve with more bottle age -- detailed notes to follow...

graphite, black currants, spice, leather, tobacco, mint, herbs, forest floor, mushrooms, Darjeeling tea, anise, rose... bright red in the glass, medium/full body, it's got everything you want in a Bordeaux at a very accessible price point. I have 11 bottles left and got this via a deal from B-21. I regret not buying another case.... this can definitely be consumed now if you decant for 60-90 minutes, no need to wait years and years. Will it get better? Yes, probably. Will you actually notice that improvement? Doubtful... it's already fabulous. (2145 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 10/15/2022 & rated 91 points: Super young but potential here. Cherry, black licorice, spice, gravel, tar and clove. Medium plus finish and really young. Hold until 2025. 91-93 points. (2690 views)
Tasted by J_H on 5/22/2021 & rated 94 points: Tasted blind, straight from the bottle, then decanted (is recommended).

Nose: medium (+) intense, youthful aromas of dark fruits: Wild berries, blackberries, dark plums and initially some herbal spicy nuances of mint and eucalyptus, which embeds itself better and better. In addition, coffee, vanilla and cedar are now also discernible. A lot of development to be felt, the aromas are developing more and more.

Mouth: medium in alcohol (13%!), medium (+) acidity which contributes extremely to the wine's femininity. Medium (+) in flavour intensity and medium in body. This wine is characterised by a terrific freshness, balance and drinking pleasure. In addition, a long lasting finish. A very feminine wine and one notices the Cab. Sauvignon influence (spice) is not so strong, which is why I had not guessed Bordeaux.

Of course, still a lot of storage potential, will gain in complexity. 94 to 95 points. (5490 views)
Tasted by La Sprezzatura on 5/22/2021 & rated 94 points: youthful aromas of dark fruits on the nose: wild berries, cassis, dark plum, hints of mint and herbs, cedarwood.

medium alcohol, medium+ aciditiy, the wine has a very feminine and elegant character, which we liked a lot. very fresh and clean. great drink flow. we enjoyed this stuff.

can age forever. 1-2h of decant recommended. (2285 views)
Tasted by bbq_grandcru on 12/17/2020 & rated 89 points: A bit heavy on the fruit which seems a bit one dimensional but with a nice tannin balance. Nice finish. But lacks complexity. (4785 views)
Tasted by trumpet60201 on 11/28/2020 & rated 95 points: This was outstanding. Beautiful purity of fruit. Medium body. Nose of cigar box, pine, plum. Incredibly fresh and pure. Very fine tannins. Medium length finish. Full nose and flavor, but moderate body and alcohol (13%) - perfect combo. (4518 views)
Tasted by Motz on 11/7/2019 & rated 93 points: Tasted over two days. In the 2015 style: suave. Typical bouquet and profile, silky and velvety red fruits, lively acids, layered finish. The wine held form over both days, arguable showing marginally better on the second. It might improve after seven to ten years in the cellar. Drink by 2038-2040. (6477 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 10/1/2019 & rated 94 points: This starts off a bit too oaky with deep griotte cherry and smoky Provencal herbs. It's really the palate that tells the story of this wine, where the oak isn't nearly as prominent and the finish is full of beautifully pure, deep fruit, mineral, and wildflower. This could end up being very special. (6379 views)
Tasted by Andre Brattland on 12/1/2018 & rated 93 points: 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot.

Fresh and appealing wine with sweet red berries, light cedar and smoked aromas.

Pretty rich and with nice fruit feeling with blackcurrant, cassis, blackberries, leather, salts, and light sweet wood. A little anise too. Nice wine. (6063 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/17/2018 & rated 92 points: Medium/full bodied, elegant, fresh, tobacco and cedar tinged, the ripe, dark red fruits are forward. The tannins have a softness, making the wine seem already approachable. But patience will be rewarded, as time will add complexities and nuances to the wine. Give it at least another decade or longer before popping a cork. The wine was made from blending 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 9% Cabernet. (5558 views)
Tasted by Purple Grillz on 7/29/2018 & rated 91 points: Just read Leve on this from April 20, 2016. I had the same exact experience.

Same body as 1986 but that extra layer of fruit just isn't happening. (5118 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 6/16/2018 & rated 93 points: Juicy, ripe fruit on the nose, spices, smoke, forest floor, mocha. On the palate good structure, ripe tannins, well integrated acidity and generous fruit. Very good depth and length. 92-93+ (3920 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 3/19/2018 & rated 96 points: Bordeaux 2015 in bottle (Zurich Arvi / Singapore UGCB): This was nice, in the past this cru occasionally suffered from extensive brett but this sample showed non of this problem. May be the cleaned up wine making here as well. That would be great because it is characterful aromatic wine when it is on. This sample was on. Very fragrant, gamey, dark fruit, leather, musk. Oak needs some more time. Will be great after 2025. (7716 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 3/12/2018 & rated 93 points: Concentration, length, ripe dark fruits and the added nuances of wet earth, forest floor, tobacco, ash, herbs, espresso and cassis. The wine is full bodied with ripe tannins, fresh, juicy, not quite crunchy fruit and loads of blackberries in the finish. This is the best Gruaud Larose in years. (3949 views)
Tasted by AWBryce on 2/21/2018: Soft and approachable, good tannin, great fruit on palate. (2934 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 1/27/2018 & rated 90 points: 2015 UGC- The long awaited day and the tales of the Euro: One of the most fruit forward wines I tasted in the 2015 lineup, and the fruitiest Gruaud to date for me...Not what I look for in this wine. A 180' deviation in style. There is a bit of good brett on the nose that gives me hope...HOLD (3947 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 1/25/2018: Some Quick Takes from the 2015 UGC Bordeaux Tasting (Metreon, San Francisco): This too says Cabernet. Medium to full bodied with some sweet fruit but very backward. (3200 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 1/25/2018 & rated 93 points: UGC Bordeaux Tasting 2015 Vintage (City View, Metreon, San Francisco): Nose is very good, red bell pepper, spice, among one of the top noses here; palate seems a bit closed, needs time. 92-94. 93 (3044 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Bordeaux Wine Guide

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc) - Read More about the Medoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Julien

VdB

Read more detailed information on St. Julien and its wines The seventeenth century pioneers Traces are to be found of a Saint-Julien de Rintrac, perhaps Saint-Julien's earliest name, as from the thirteenth century. But we have to wait until the seventeenth century pioneers, urban and rural aristocrats, discover the exceptional merits of these terroirs.
Traces of this system still exist today in the structure of estates within the appellation: by the side of the two villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, the large estates are heavily preponderant, representing more than four fifths of the total surface of vineyards.

The terrain is practically identical over all the commune. Only the proximity of the estuary, sometimes close, sometimes further away, can cause slight variations in climate. In fact, Saint-Julien-Beychevelle's layer of gravel takes the form of a huge rectangle over 3 miles long and 2 miles wide. And the alluvial deposits are particularly well fragmented into ridges of Garonne gravel of the early Quaternary. Accordingly, the vines are safeguarded from stagnant water.

The wines from the Saint-Julien appellation may be recognized by their unparalleled bouquet, particularly harmonious and mild. They have a fine deep colour and combine the finesse of their aromas and a solid constitution. They have body, are very rich in flavour and have a delicious and delicate bouquet.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)
In order to have the right to the Saint-Julien appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Saint-Julien and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cussac, and Saint-Laurent, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
