Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by melvinyeowq on 12/8/2023 & rated 89 points: Eugene's birthday: Still tight and tannic with plummy notes. None of the textbook Roagna elegance and lifted aromatics, so suspect this was not the most representative bottle. (753 views)
Tasted by NickA on 10/10/2023 & rated 92 points: 2014 Barolo and Barbaresco (Terra Rossa): Slightly translucent red - quite a contrast to the wines in the previous flight. A sexy nose, with an almondy Bakewell Tart note, and a touch of vanilla. Good on the palate too, which was a great (and well-balanced) combination of juicily piquant, deeply plummy and slightly gamey. Very enjoyable, and the group's joint #3 wine. (958 views)
Tasted by fussyeater on 10/10/2023 & rated 92 points: Barolo and Barbaresco 2014s at Terra Rossa (Terra Rossa, London N1): Darker translucent red in colour with nose showing darker red fruits, freshly cut flowers, and a little smoke. Medium to medium full in body, satiny tannins, and darker fruits once again. Well balanced and focused delivery yet would benefit from cellar time. (764 views)
Tasted by Tejassathian on 9/15/2023 & rated 92 points: Showed really nicely alongside some very impressive wines (Grand Echezaux, Lynch Bages). Still quite primary but very enjoyable - very soft and friendly on first approach, with tannins then starting to show more clearly. Tannins aren't fully resolved and integrated yet but are quite enjoyable. Violets, roses, tar, forest, red cherry. Nice pairing with roast maitake in tomato/eggplant ragu. (654 views)
Tasted by …. on 12/26/2022 & rated 93 points: Opened 2 hours in advance but not decanted. Very similar to my last bottle, 1 1/2 years ago. Violets and orange peel can be added though and the overall expression seems more balanced as well. Still with a lot of life left, but drinking quite beautiful now. Another bottle that confirms that 14 is clearly a underrated vintage when it comes to Barbaresco in general and this producer more specific. I have to increase my rating to a very solid 93.  Tasted by drwine2001 on 11/27/2022: Opened and poured. Transparent light ruby core. Smoky black cherry aromas right off the bat followed by mint and a bit of tar. Absolutely gorgeous medium to light weight with soil, perfect acidity, and light tannins complementing the dark red fruit which sweetened over time. It never closed down, and at the 2 hour mark, a twist of orange zest appeared. This just drank supremely well for a young Barbaresco and made me wonder if 2014 is significantly underrated. Maybe it’s just me :) (1362 views)
Tasted by HENNO1 on 10/1/2022 & rated 94 points: In short stunning. Drunk alongside Mascarello Villero 2010 and Roagna Paje ‘old bones’ 2015. The Mascarello was 2nd division compared to The Roagnas, which were both lovely. (828 views)
Tasted by The Guzz on 2/23/2022 & rated 92 points: Delicious young neb. Well balanced. Great perfume. Kept building. Drinking well young. (1263 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 2/24/2021: 2 hours of aeration in decanter. Slightly more closed than the one of 8 months ago, notwithstanding the aeration. I'll consider it again post-2024. For its full potential, it's highly recommended

Tasted by …. on 8/10/2020 & rated 92 points: Good experience in general. Medium+ tannins and acidity, maybe a little to much acidity at this point for my taste, but still a good balance overall. It delivers dark cherries, a clear floral note, dried herbs and a little earthiness as well. A surprisingly intense aftertaste and a great potential for sure. At this point it missing complexity and a little in balance to get a higher rating, so a solid 92 for now. I will keep the rest of my bottles for a couple of years and then se what has happened.  Tasted by Tim Heaton on 8/5/2020: At the beginning of a long, and lovely life. Bright aromatics, elegant medium body with good+ depth. Likely to continue improving, though also very good now, too; seemed fine with a PnP, which kind of surprised. For its full potential, it's highly recommended

Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/24/2019: Piedmont II - better and learnings; 11/23/2019-11/29/2019 (Barolo, Alba, others): My wine of the meal. It's true that it is higher acid and to me this mostly meant that we crossed into that slightly ethereal style and lots of red fruits and a very balanced style and while it gained some more body with time it continued to be very elegant. I enjoyed it a lot. (2507 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 11/24/2019: Thanksgiving week in Piemonte; 11/22/2019-11/30/2019 (Milan, Barolo, Alba, Barbaresco): From the wine list at More et Macine. Side by side with the '13 Roagna Faset. While I loved the Faset, the Albesani was even a step up from there. Such pretty floral aromatics - lots to keep you happy just sniffing here. This is very energetic on the palate with lively acidity, fresh red cherries and then the minerals, mint and earth. Still a baby but a beauty to be sure. (2876 views)

Roagna

Producer website

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
