Eugene's birthday: Still tight and tannic with plummy notes. None of the textbook Roagna elegance and lifted aromatics, so suspect this was not the most representative bottle.

Barolo and Barbaresco 2014s at Terra Rossa (Terra Rossa, London N1): Darker translucent red in colour with nose showing darker red fruits, freshly cut flowers, and a little smoke. Medium to medium full in body, satiny tannins, and darker fruits once again. Well balanced and focused delivery yet would benefit from cellar time.

2014 Barolo and Barbaresco (Terra Rossa): Slightly translucent red - quite a contrast to the wines in the previous flight. A sexy nose, with an almondy Bakewell Tart note, and a touch of vanilla. Good on the palate too, which was a great (and well-balanced) combination of juicily piquant, deeply plummy and slightly gamey. Very enjoyable, and the group's joint #3 wine.

Showed really nicely alongside some very impressive wines (Grand Echezaux, Lynch Bages). Still quite primary but very enjoyable - very soft and friendly on first approach, with tannins then starting to show more clearly. Tannins aren't fully resolved and integrated yet but are quite enjoyable. Violets, roses, tar, forest, red cherry. Nice pairing with roast maitake in tomato/eggplant ragu.

Opened 2 hours in advance but not decanted. Very similar to my last bottle, 1 1/2 years ago. Violets and orange peel can be added though and the overall expression seems more balanced as well. Still with a lot of life left, but drinking quite beautiful now. Another bottle that confirms that 14 is clearly a underrated vintage when it comes to Barbaresco in general and this producer more specific. I have to increase my rating to a very solid 93.
