Tasted by Bwallace on 2/17/2020 & rated 94 points: Spectacular Napa can holding up well. Feels like it has some more years left (1513 views)
Tasted by Bwallace on 12/22/2018 & rated 94 points: Wow, fantastic spring mountain cab! Best in our lineup for the evening with the Byrd’s. (1903 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 11/21/2017 & rated 91 points: very nice for a BIG Napa mountain fruit cab, served to my step-dad of 36 years cuz I know he likes his wine big, this did the trick in style, big in your face fruit, decent acidity for balance, color was dark, dark purple... I liked it pretty well which, given my aversion to BIG wines and in your face cabs was a statement on the quality (2520 views)
Tasted by Bwallace on 11/12/2017 & rated 93 points: At the ranch with family. Kept its age well but seems to be nearing the “oth” stage. Smooth tannins and has that great Napa 11 year old cab nose. Favored over a $200 2012 Napa Cab. (2420 views)
Tasted by jschnabel on 11/24/2016 & rated 92 points: Drink up, time is ticking. But nonetheless, it's performing very well as the tannins have grown soft and supple. The nose gives off a faint scent of flowers and cedar. The acidity is still very good and the dominant taste is cherry and cassis. (3081 views)
Tasted by Snag One on 11/18/2016 & rated 94 points: Wow, has this wine evolved into a real gem. Very nice notes of mocha, mint, cassis and red figs. Great complexity combined with layers of ripe red fruit, licorice, raisins, figs and chocolate. (1920 views)
Tasted by cawineaux on 3/13/2016 & rated 94 points: Needs an hour in the decanter for some initial alcohol to blow off. This is a fruit forward, very new world sort of wine, but with delicate structure. (1761 views)
Tasted by jschnabel on 3/11/2016 & rated 94 points: Well, waiting has paid off. The wine is really singing now and it's time to drink. This Spring Mountain beauty is pleasurable just looking at it: dark garnet. The nose has a perfume of flowers (jasmine or plumeria). But then drink - tannins are soft but not weak. Acidity is pleasant. And the taste is jammy dark fruit with a leather and pepper finish. Well made. (1970 views)
Tasted by dharrison93 on 12/7/2015 & rated 90 points: Aging gracefully at age 9. Deep purple with no sediment. Cherry, spice, blackberry and licorice. Lovely layers and palate coating charm.

If a date, this was a 32 year old blind date who shows up dressed conservatively yet hints over the entire dinner what might happen if you want it to... (2198 views)
Tasted by Snag One on 8/28/2015 & rated 92 points: Very deep dark ruby red color. Big nose right out of the bottle with layers of red figs, blackberries, toast, raisins, loam and chocolate. Well balanced with good acidity and mouthfeel. Layers of figs, toast, cassis, chocolate, licorice and mint. Wonderful wine. The others bottles in the cellar will do fine for another few years. (1830 views)
Tasted by Pluecht on 9/5/2014 & rated 92 points: Fantastic full bodied mountain wine. Drinking really nice, I think it will continue to hold (2311 views)
Tasted by dfresh on 3/29/2014 & rated 95 points: The drinking window is right now. So austere, balanced and structured. Brambly blueberries and pencil lead. Nice long finish. Delightful. (1915 views)
Tasted by thevinerthings on 12/14/2013 & rated 92 points: Delicious wine from a reliable producer. Decanted and drank over the evening - showing nicely now and will only improve with age. (2189 views)
Tasted by Wino from Michigan on 9/7/2013 & rated 94 points: Amazing wine - I love this producer. (2062 views)
Tasted by chipwine on 4/29/2013: Excellent wine. Big fruit forward, nice tannins, amazing oak finish. This wine is outstanding!! (3507 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 3/22/2013 & rated 91 points: Nice but needs some time. Improved over the night but heavy wood. Minerals, vanilla, blackberries and coffee beans. Still tight and just needs five years in the cellar. Decanted 3 hours. (1860 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 3/9/2013 & rated 89 points: Napa Cabs/Bordeaux Blends with 2002 Insignia and Vertical of Anderson's Conn Valley Eloge (Jan's Place, St. Paul, MN): Very dark red purple color. Unknown decant. Followed one glass over 2+ hrs. The nose shows blueberry, herbal, black currant, subtle earth, oak. The palate is a somewhat leaner, higher acids, a bit green edged, tasted oak, black fruits, some alcohol that mostly blows off. Spicy and medium finish, This may improve, but I am concerned by the herbal quality and the green tannins. It was definitely better 2 hours into the tasting, but not a wine I would recommend at this point. 88-89pts. (1780 views)
Tasted by Fullhouse on 2/14/2013 & rated 92 points: Opened hour before enjoying. Excellant expression
of Spring Mountain Cab. (1170 views)
Tasted by jschnabel on 1/18/2013 & rated 92 points: A deep garnet pour, with a nose of fragrant wood, licorice, earth and roses. A dense fruit palate with hints of pepper on the end. (1413 views)
Tasted by dfresh on 10/27/2012 & rated 90 points: Did not have the depth or richness I experienced on previous bottles (1156 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 6/23/2012 & rated 90 points: others may score this higher but it isn't my style / doesnt give me the sherwin estate experience i'm used to... nose is nice, big red fruit and some oak (but not obtrusive), also something else - can't tell if medicinal or herbs, but definitely 'hot' on the nose, tiff noticed hot and pruney nose... palate is big fruit - cherry and prunes - and hot too, the herb element is out or again is it medicine... i bet others would like this wine as it is rich but not my favorite Shrwn Fam Estate (too big, too alcoholic... might it settle after a number of years?), also no tannins / bite which is surprising for mountain fruit... hmmm (1297 views)
Tasted by Winerut on 6/16/2012 & rated 92 points: Very good well balanced wine with soft tannins, dark fruit. (1374 views)
Tasted by metcellar on 4/15/2012 & rated 93 points: Big flavors, dark, jammy fruits (1683 views)
Tasted by dfresh on 12/31/2011 & rated 91 points: Wine continues to impress. Cool climate, high elevation cabernet: dark fruit, focused, crisp and intense. Window to drink is now . (1738 views)
Tasted by dfresh on 11/20/2011 & rated 91 points: Bright and focused vs. round and plush. High mountain elevation expression of cabernet. Fruits, richness and depth slightly subdued. (1773 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

Estate

In the United States, "Wines with “estate bottled” designations must: a) also designate an appellation of origin or an AVA, and both the vineyards and the winery must be located there; b) the grapes must come from vineyards owned or controlled by the winery; and c) the wine must have been produced, from crush to bottle, in a continuous process without leaving the winery’s premises."

- WINE LABEL FAQS: A QUICK SUMMARY OF LABEL DESIGNATION RULES" by David E. Stoll

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
