Tasted by Juliansi on 1/12/2024 & rated 91 points: This Shiraz is 100% grown in the Heathcote area, and the best grapes are selected from 6 different vineyards (Owned by David "Duck" Anderson's close friends) to make Springflat Shiraz.

The grapes are grown on 3 different types of soil and aged in French and American oak (14 months).

Twernty.. No make that 23 years has resulted in the tannins not only becoming softer, but fully resolved with such incredible flavours being revealed.

I find it so hard to believe that one of Duck's mid-range offerings at under USD 50 can age so well, for over two decades. Truly masterful!

I read this was initially broodingly backward (Says Robert Parker 20 years ago), but the tightness has given way to show such wonderful aromas of oak and blackfruit.

The bite and peppery spice of Shiraz has given way to make this feel like an aged Cab, how spectacular!

Plum notes and a classical aged smooth finish, with a finish of over 30 seconds. Only light sediments, we did not even decant this, and simply drank this slowly over two hours.

Enjoyed each and every drop!

Such a treat to try this, specially hand-carried back from his cellar in Melbourne, by brother VC, where he shared this with us (His missus, N, and daughter M, as well as mine, L) along with a spectacular Diana Madeline 2011, at Travelling Duck in Pavilion Damansara. Thank you!

Drinking very well (1211 views)
Tasted by tbone on 7/14/2020: Decanted for sediment and was fantastic immediately. Yes its a fuller bodied wine but very nice balance and delicious. Drank one at 10 years, 15 years and now 19+ and enjoyed it every time. Quality wine and arguably the best Aussie shiraz I have drunk. (1345 views)
Tasted by tbone on 7/28/2015: Great wine and well worth the wait. In its drinking window but will hold for some time. Loved it. (3374 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 7/24/2015 & rated 92 points: Very much enjoyed this. Decanted over 90 minutes. Has turned into a complex black and blue fruit wine with minimal alcohol or tannins. Long finish. Big but not over the top. (3329 views)
Tasted by Giggs on 3/19/2015 & rated 87 points: Decanted briefly and returned to bottle for 24 hours, then decanted again. There wasn't much going on with this wine when I decanted it, so I gave it an extra day. Nothing changed. Typical Wild Duck Creek eucalyptus, menthol, and spearmint on the nose, but the straightforward red cherry/berry fruit isn't nearly as dark, rich, or textured as the awesome 1998 Springflat, which peaked in 2012. This 2001 bottling is a similar 14 years past vintage, and while it seems to be right at (or very slightly past) peak, it's just not that compelling of a wine. Hopefully my view will change with my next three bottles. Drink now-2015. (3479 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 10/20/2014 & rated 92 points: This is in a very good place right now. Had with Sicilian sausage. Opaque. Thick and rich black fruit. Chewy and interesting. Long finish. Alcohol and tannins muted. Very nice (3134 views)
Tasted by Mic Mac on 9/1/2013 & rated 92 points: Raspberry coulis, tea and subtle nutty oak nose. Bright vibrant fruit on the front palate. Some toasty oak secondary characters with a bit if smoke and tobacco on the (long) aftertaste. 92 on its ear. No hurry. (3478 views)
Tasted by Wade Instone on 3/28/2012 & rated 93 points: Deep ruby red. Flinty earthy nose, iron shavings and wet stone (some really interesting metal shop characters), red currants, cherries, licorice, tar, some background toasty oak, and hints of menthol and spice box (very complex). Some juicy red spicy fruit on a mid weight palate, with good balanced acidity and some grippy tannins still there. Medium to long. Nice complex oldish Heathcote wine, that is probably at or nearing its peak. (2558 views)
Tasted by bmwcarl on 2/1/2012: A little too much acidity and prominent secondary characteristics without enough fruit to really be memorable or very enjoyable for my palate. Tasted very old world and mature for a 2001 shiraz. (2844 views)
Tasted by tbone on 8/11/2010: Pretty nice. NOT a big Aussie fruit bomb, but rather a nuanced, full bodied syrah (shiraz). The only shortcoming is the slight scorched earth aspect that I despise, but is rather light and paired really well with rack of lamb cooked on a bed of rosemary. Do not need to be in a hurry to finish these. (2677 views)
Tasted by markjanes on 4/4/2010 & rated 92 points: Dark in color, rim looking younger than its age... aromatically has plenty of pure cassis, raspberry... is highlighted by a very distinct, eukalytptol-like green note... plenty of dark spices and slight tar, leather. On the palate the wine has moderate acidity that is quite well integrated for what has to be an acidulated wine... smooth transition into a round and full midpalate, very ripe tannins... moderate to high alcohol but drinking no where near 15.5. Balanced wine with good length, great intensity, and very good complexity. Reasonable finesse, very nice, not sweet midpalate and texture, good expression of place. This wine was a really big surprise for me... almost every Aussie Shiraz for me at this age seems obviously acidulated, disjointed, too sweet... this has none of that and is quite distinctive. Drinking at or near its peak but showing no signs of fading... a big WOW for me... very unexpected. (2747 views)
Tasted by cob on 3/9/2010: This wine is fully mature and drinking very well. Not your typical Aussie fruitbomb, nice complexity and finish. Sorry for the lack of notes and score but I am happy I purchased this one. (2719 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 2/9/2010: Decant this for 90 minutes to 2 hrs and it is an excellent wine. Full bodied, full of fruit, complex. Nose on opening is old world. Very very good. (2450 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 12/27/2009 & rated 87 points: Enjoyable, easy drinker. Liquidy blackberries and currants and a bit of cola. Exceptionally clean taste. Body is particularly light on the finish. Well integrated tannins. 87. Would drink now. (2457 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 7/12/2009: Same as 1/24 review. Big enough to drink afte some more finesse winens. (2306 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 1/24/2009: really really really need to decant
if you can wait an hour or two, turns into an awesome bottle of wine. powerful is a great adjective for this one. (2590 views)
Tasted by salil on 10/24/2008 & rated 91 points: Quite similar to my last bottle. Tightly wound on the nose at first with rich dark fruit flavours, earth, dark chocolate and a little spice emerging with air. Rich and full bodied on the palate with similar flavours to the nose, but this didn't quite have the lifting acidity that my last bottle of this had. Fairly firm, chewy tannins with a long finish showing a touch of alcoholic warmth. Improved significantly, feeling more seamless and integrated with time in the glass. (2624 views)
Tasted by salil on 10/7/2008 & rated 92 points: Comes across as a little monolithic at first with just a ton of dark fruited flavours and not much more. With a couple of hours in a decanter this transforms completely. The youthful fruit flavours still dominate the nose, but there's a lot more complexity with dark chocolate, earth, spices and some minty/eucalyptus notes coming out. Full bodied on the palate showing ripe sweet plums and blackberries with more earth, chocolate and hints of tobacco leaf emerging after a little more time in the glass. This is a big wine (15.5% alcohol), but it's in perfect balance with really good acidity adding lift, chewy tannins and just a little bit of bitterness on the finish. A fantastic wine, and I'm glad to have more of this. (2413 views)
Tasted by AlexRed on 10/23/2005 & rated 88 points: This is begining to taste like it is evolving....

Still dark in the glass, but gained a little viscosity and is a tad lighter at the very edge.
dry, old cinnimon and pepper on the nose, with a little dark fruit.

The formerly big and bold fruit is fading, and there are dry spices and more acidity coming forward...
still very enjoyable. interesting to taste what used to be a big huge fruity, minty, oaky wine (in a good way for me) change into something different. (3816 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 10/5/2005: ($35) Meaty, spicy, and extracted on the nose, laced with concentrated blackberry. Rather chewey on the palate with tannin with slightly pruney, meaty, blackberry fruit. Somewhat unbalanced. (2291 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 8/4/2005 & rated 93 points: Color: Medium purple
Nose: Smoke, earth, plum, cherry
Taste: Currants, violet, earth
Finish: Medium with several components intermixing
Evaluation: Great wine that is aging nicely 93 points (1486 views)
Tasted by WineGal on 6/13/2004: 1st Night - only 2 things come through: Vanilla and Mint. Thats all. No fruit, no nothing. Those two overpower everything else. Is this typical? I had expected a more balanced wine. Later on, the mint turned more menthol.

2nd Night - Some fruit starting to show through. The vanilla and mint are still prominent, but a little subdued compared to the first night.

3rd Night - Surprisingly, it's becoming a little balanced. It's still al little hot, but the vanilla and menthol are fading and are more prominent on the nose than the tongue. I'm getting some cocoa, blackberries, pie cherries, and of all things, acidity. Before, it was just a Hagen Daas Vanilla Milkshake with Vick's Vapo Rub. I've never experienced this with any wine.

Hated it on the first night, and I really like Shiraz. The second night was neutral, and the third night was intruiging. Will this wine age into something I'll like? (3354 views)

Wild Duck Creek Shiraz Springflat

Springflat Shiraz is our original flagship wine having been made every vintage since 1991.

Springflat Shiraz is a blend of 4 distinct estate grown vineyards in the Heathcote region. Parcels of fruit are picked and vinified separately, whilst utilising a small amount of whole bunches in the ferments for added texture. Hand plunged, slowly basket pressed and then matured in French and American oak hogsheads for up to 22 months, 40% of which are new.
