Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.9 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 177 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by NickA on 11/14/2023 & rated 91 points: 67PM with Roger + friends (67 Pall Mall): A mild disappointment relative to expectations, and for my palate overshadowed by the complex, refreshing Levet, but some of the others actually preferred this red. I think this was a sound bottle, but the fruit seemed to lack focus, and there wasn't a great deal of complexity... though it certainly tasted good, in a succulent, slightly over the top 'Southern Rhone (TM)' fashion.  Tasted by Caruso on 11/12/2023 & rated 95 points: Ruby with orange hue in thin layers. From the start (no decant, no airing, just pnp) a fruit dominated nose of (in order of appearance) cherries then within some minutes adding cola, herbs, strawberries, tree bark. On the palate quite fullbodied and intense and hiding the high alcohol levels. Smooth with most tannins shed. After more than 90 minutes of airing from the opened and partly emptied bottle, the tannins become more noticeable again. Excellent to outstanding length. On peak, but should be consumed within one to two hours after opening from my warmer than textbook cellar. For sure even if perfectly cellared since release, this doesn't benefit from a decant or extended airing. (Clos des Papes never does in the last more than thirty years I tasted it, at least if its more than 10 years cellared since release) 5/14/18/8. 93 points from Joe Czerwinski and 96 from Jeb Dunnuck both for the WA and this time I more agree with Jeb. -2030 if perfectly stored since release, otherwise drnk it up, as Jeff Leve adviced.  Tasted by GEL Wines on 11/3/2023 & rated 92 points: Double decanted one hour before; served at c16C. Similar to previous bottles. It in great spot--fabulous balance between fruit, structure and acidity. Excellent pairing with rack of lamb. (2066 views)
(2468 views)
Tasted by GEL Wines on 1/28/2023 & rated 91 points: Similar to last bottle. Needs a bit of air to get past fruit dominant start. Ready for drinking. Paired nicely with roast duck. (3906 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/11/2023 & rated 93 points: Monthly Tasting Group HWS: Clos des Papes (By AH): Much more beautiful and lively bouquet than the 2001 we tasted beside it. Rustic impressions and dark berries. On the palate juicy red berries, garrigue, beautiful acidity and tannin with a pleasant bite. The wine still shows some youthfulness, but also some development. Delicious wine in its adolescent stage. (3720 views)

Tasted by SLOFred on 12/24/2022 & rated 92 points: Beautiful, sparkling red, likely from Grenache. I do not know the blend, but I think this has a lot of Grenache, accounting for the color and approachability. I opened but did not decant 3 hours before drinking. I likely would not decant this wine. (2892 views)
Tasted by GEL Wines on 12/11/2022 & rated 93 points: Opened 1 hour beforehand, was fairly fruit forward with limited bouquet at opening. Didn't decant as not closed. In glass over next c.1 hour bouquet developed and wine gained more structure--from bright fruit to darker berry with a hint of underbrush. Mid-weight mouthfeel. Very elegant. Does not call for a food foil, but would pair nicely with food that does not benefit from tannic pairing. Excellent wine that is ready and that should hold for several more years. I like where it's at in terms of fruit but not overly "stewed". Grenache (65%), Mouvèdre (20%), Syrah (10%) (3028 views)
Tasted by mmcdds on 12/3/2022 & rated 93 points: This was really excellent tonight almost immediately after opening but really started to shine after about an hour or so of air and still tasting consistently with my note from 03/22. The rich dark fruit is still in the “candied fruit roll up stage” and hasn’t yet turned the corner into an abundance of stewed fruit. Quite delicious, and for me, still in it’s perfect drinking window. (2229 views)
Tasted by sfwinelover1 on 11/28/2022: Second from a lot of 3 and generally consistent with my note from 2/20. More mature, this still needed 90 minutes-2 hours to settle down and integrate, with powerful acidity leading the way off the pour. The structure is still powerfully intact, and while I’m always reluctant to disagree with the wise Jeff Leve and I can’t recall exactly how vibrant the fruit was almost 3 years ago, this still tastes well in its drinking window to me (I originally had 2027 as my later drink by date, which, if anything, seems conservative). I’m ever so slightly less bullish about this particular iteration of this cuvée; I don’t think it will go down as one of this producer’s best efforts (probably just above the ‘08 toward the lower end of those I’ve tasted), but even a second tier Clos Des Papes is still a pretty fine wine, really enjoyable for me. I’ll likely drink the third of the 3 in the next couple of years or so and will likely pop the ‘05, and perhaps the ‘09, in the interim. 93-94 if scoring. (2418 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 11/28/2022 & rated 92 points: Just about to enter the other side of maturity, you can still find ample, fresh, ripe, red fruits, spice, bouquet garni, pepper, and floral notes, but the fruit has started to lose some of its intensity. This wine requires drinking in the near future. Drink from 2022-2025. (3907 views)
Tasted by vide on 11/12/2022 & rated 92 points: A wine of real class, but perhaps lacking in the stature of the same wine from other vintages. (2128 views)
Tasted by foyfrcs on 9/9/2022 & rated 94 points: Deep garnet.
Powerful blackberry, black cherry, chocolate, vanilla nose.
Medium bodied, very well balanced, well integrated tannins.
Spice, black fruits and hint of black pepper palate.
Outstanding wine.
Should be fine for 5-10 years. (2347 views)
Tasted by philipop on 4/23/2022 & rated 91 points: Bu avec Michel et Catherine (3296 views)
Tasted by mmcdds on 3/1/2022 & rated 91 points: Really delightful tonight with lots of deep, rich, earthy red and black fruit and garrigue. The fruit is forward and is in what I like to think of as the “candied fruit roll up stage.” Soon I expect it to begin morphing into the stewed fruit stage, which for me is either a win or a loss depending on whether or not the stewiness is dominant or a nuance. I don’t like when it becomes dominant. This was good on opening, but was really shining after about an hour or so of air. (3442 views)
Tasted by Shiaxonna on 1/19/2022 & rated 91 points: A really rich and palate-filling style of CdP. Relatively high alcohol, needs to keep this wine relatively cold to enjoy it completely. Tons of fruit and concentration. Really good. But tonight I preferred the Pegau. (3665 views)
Tasted by ddingley on 12/21/2021 & rated 94 points: In a great place. Good right away but hour plus decant helped (3336 views)
Tasted by fdub on 12/11/2021 & rated 93 points: Well made but a bit of stewed fruit. Looking for a bit more freshness. (3159 views)
Tasted by KeesElmes on 11/25/2021: Tasting food right now (2632 views)
Tasted by liber on 11/8/2021 & rated 92 points: Several magna with Ga party, opened an hour, perfect corks and levels - dark and youthful; attractive nuanced nose, plum, some cherry, tapinade and garrigue, earthy minerality; fullish, long, persistent and surprisingly concentrated, fruit forward stage but open for business with upside, good for at least 10 years. F (17.5). (2712 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 10/25/2021 & rated 94 points: From a bottle that had been purchased upon release and cellared under ideal conditions, this deep garnet wine was decanted off of its substantial sediment and serially sampled over the ensuing three hours. A blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% other permitted varietals, it is aromatically intense, offering scents of dark bramble fruits, Asian spices, Provençal herbs, licorice and black pepper. Medium-to-full-bodied, freshly acidic and with a plentitude of fine-grained tannins, it delivers flavors mirroring the aromas, adding notes of cocoa and loamy earth. When served at 60-65°F there is no issue with the wine's alcohol (which is listed as 14%). Dense in the middle and lengthy on the finish, this is a superb Châteauneuf that will have substantial longevity. Give it at least an hour of aeration. Comparably cellared bottles will provide pleasure for many years to come. Drink now-2031. (2858 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 9/10/2021 & rated 91 points: I think that this big style producer's wine in 2011 has reached a point of peak, and its all down hill from here. The more I drink Rhone wines, the more I realize that the combination of high fruit and high alcohol, does not bode well with time and the wines are really the shiniest within the first 5 to 7 years of life. The bigger the extract, the shorter the life. This is still pretty full of deep red fruit, but a faded version of the fruit, that is starting to give in to some lumber on the back side. Glad to have only 1 LEFT! DRINK (3078 views)
Tasted by Zitan on 8/22/2021 & rated 94 points: Bought 6 in 2014 - this was the first - took good CT advice and gave it 3 hours decant - floral and feminine and lovely - good now with enough air but will improve for years - so glad we have 5 more! (2714 views)
Tasted by boomecho on 7/30/2021 & rated 90 points: Vinturi aerated with a 90min decant. Dark fruit, baking spice, some heat on the nose. Medium bodied. Tons or fruit with spicy pepper notes. Long plum based finish. Delicious (2037 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
