Community Tasting Notes (average 93.3 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 43 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by hungrybram on 3/4/2024 & rated 94 points: Calming nose of hazelnut and bruised apple. Bruised apple, almond, honey, with a tad of butter on the palate. Just delicious (208 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 10/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Honeyed but fresh. Vintage has definitive botrytis traits. Should be drunk. (479 views)
Tasted by Vstalam on 9/23/2023 & rated 95 points: A treat for anyone who has this in their cellar. Wonderful texture with an incredibly long finish with honey, yellow fruit, and wonderful salinity. Generously shared by a fellow diner at a restaurant in Paris. (389 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 9/16/2023 & rated 96 points: Superb - just the perfect level of concentration and acidity. So much intensity and youth still - like a perfectly behaved teenager. (432 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 4/16/2023 & rated 95 points: Slightly sweeter with freshness light and lacy. (631 views)
Tasted by AB16 on 11/14/2022 & rated 96 points: As good as 30 year old Chardonnay can be. Bottle purchased from winery and recorked. Straw color with some yellow and no oxidative hue. Alluring nose of perfect fruit with vanilla notes and light toast. Elegant ample fruit on palate with layers of depth, long finish and good acid. Nice secondary flavors developing. Not past it’s prime , but not sure why you wouldn’t drink now. This wine is singing (771 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 6/21/2022 & rated 91 points: In 750ml. Nose shows peach, honey, herbs, sesame and ripe yellow fruit. Palate is ripe and rich with reasonable amount of acidity. It has good definition on the palate with sufficient underlying substance. Being consistent with my previous view, the 92 Leflaive should be drank sooner than later. Much prefer 93 for Leflaive for its acidity and freshness. (1220 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 4/9/2022 & rated 96 points: From a great looking bottle, this wine had a yellow center and clear rims. The medium+ intensity nose showed attractive jelly notes at first. After a few hours of air it evolved into white stone, macaroon, lemon, petroleum jelly, and vanilla flavors.

In the mouth, this was rich and ripe with great acidity and huge length. While not heavy at all, this wine had a huge flavor impact and excellent complexity.

This was Grand Cru quality. While at peak now, a bottle in this condition would have lasted 5+ years in the cellar. After 5 hours of air, this White Burg was staggeringly great for a Premier Cru! The best of this bottling I can recall. (1166 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 6/5/2021 & rated 93 points: Some funk at the open. Blew off and got better and better as the night went on. Gained weight and complexity. Texturally this had a viscosity more similar to Rhone white. Good acid backbone and plenty of fruit. Some lemon, celery, flowers. Well stored bottle still showing well. (1531 views)
Tasted by cortoncharlie on 5/8/2021 & rated 94 points: One of the best specimens of this wine I have tasted. The color was golden and somewhat advanced but it was not oxed and needed 30 mins of air to really liven up. Profile closer to Chevalier than Batard. Textbook example of what a 30-yr old 1er cru from a big vintage should taste like at peak. Could be slightly stingy on the scoring as while this was good I knew good bottles of the 92 Batard and Chevalier could smoke this. Original non-reconditioned bottle. (1339 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 12/25/2020 & rated 97 points: Beautiful matchsticks finish. (1357 views)
Tasted by Raage on 1/23/2020 & rated 93 points: (CDV)
Belle bouteille, presque 30 ans, impressionnant! (1838 views)
Tasted by Sleepy Dave on 11/16/2019: From 375ml.
Amazing light yellow, premox? not existed! Such sweet seductive and airy aromas of roasted hazelnut, white flower, Orchard fruits, sweet herbs , highly lifted, powerful yet super focus. Hauntingly beautiful and I can’t stop sniffing it. Such perfect harmony on the palate with intense sweet fruits, acidity, minerality, sweet spices combines with salinity, power and elegance. Old Leflaive is such a bomb when it is on form. Delicious! (1924 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 9/28/2019 & rated 92 points: In half bottle. Butter and caramel on the nose while the signature sesame was present in the backdrop. Rich and ripe with tension but it fell off the cliff with dominant tropical fruit after 30 mins. (1698 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 1/19/2019 & rated 95 points: From an excellent looking bottle, the medium+ instensity nose offered up dried mango, candied lemon, and white stone.

In the mouth, this wine was rich and ripe but had a very firm backbone that more than held it all together. Despite this wines substantial presence, it had fantastic balance and length.

To my mind this is Grand Cru quality all the way. It will easily last a decade but can you resist? (1832 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 11/17/2018 & rated 92 points: Acker 2018/11 (Marea): Oaky and intense salinity supported by yellow fruit, rocks and hint of rose. Good roundness. 92 (1888 views)
Tasted by FYC on 4/7/2017: This is pure elegance and beauty at this stage. Lacks the Leflaive sulfur but also 0.00% noticeable oak. This wine is pure elegance and beauty. Edged out the 1990 Krug for WOTN. Simply outstanding. (2588 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 3/6/2017 & rated 90 points: Much flatter and less expressive than magnum from domaine. Citrus and mineral notes in a muted form. 90- (2524 views)
Tasted by justburg on 6/30/2016 & rated 90 points: Dinner at Corner House. Deep yellow-gold. Aesthetically pleasing. The wine somehow failed to live up to expectations. I've had some lovely 1992s from Leflaive, but this didn't show particularly well on the night. Yellow roses, sweetened pineapple, mango, crushed rocks, matchstick, touch of olive oil. Lacked the acidity and structure on the palate. There was some nice yellow fruit with some fine secondary characteristics like olive oil, almond, cashews, honey and sea salt. Good wine, but not particularly expressive or alluring like how a good aged Leflaive can be. (3235 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 2/20/2016 & rated 94 points: 30th Wedding anniversary with dear friends (INTRO Chicago): Initially very clean color only to see the color change to a light honey color. Fragrant nose, some tightness on the palate yet over the course of an hour did it finally developed into pure magic. Still time in the btl for this wine. (3266 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 8/16/2015 & rated 95 points: From another excellent looking bottle, this wine had an amazing bright yellow center and clear rims. The high intensity nose featured lemon zest, marzipan, apples, and white stone.

This wine was great from the get-go but improved with 4 hours of air. It was ripe and rich but buttressed by great acidity. It had great balance and length. After 5 hours the powdered stone in the finish was blowing me away.

While I have not read my prior notes, my recollection is this that this wine has been consistently good. This bottle was great! (3363 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 2/27/2015 & rated 92 points: From magnum from domaine. Green apple, slate, cantalopue, fresh tennis balls, and fresh rubber on the nose. Light honey and an underlying sweetness to the palate with firm back acid and a long finish. Paired well with uni. (2517 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 12/7/2014 & rated 94 points: Impromptu gathering with Ken at Tachibana (Tachibana, Mclean, Va): The 92 Leflaive Chevalier has been one of my top five whites. This bottle has been ideally cellared and I am the second owner. Expressive nose of very ripe yellow pit fruits, apple butter, sweet spices, a hint of honey and mineral. Unctuous palate, almost oily, sweet almost dessert wine like palate impression and lovely long finish. This is closer to the 92 Batard than the Chevalier, very bold and expressive. Ken took the remaining bottle home and informed me that The color lighten up some and more of the flower and lemon grass notes started to emerge and the “late harvest” notes faded which is exactly what I would have expected. If you want to experience exotic ripe Chardonnay, please serve pop and pour. If you prefer the precision, decant for three four hours.

Tasted by Robert Pavlovich on 10/20/2014: Showed excellent freshness considering its age and such enjoyable and concentrated honey extract along with hints of lemon curd underneath. It has a lovely, elegant texture with layers of fruit, complexity, and with good energy. Easy to like and very pleasing to the senses, this is a a good reminder of the great rewards aged white burgundy can provide. (2831 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/19/2014 & rated 93 points: Chicago Burgundy Geek Dinner (Boka - Chicago IL): Some candied apple with a fat/ripe and slightly honeyed character that I'd consider prototypically Pucelles. Starts forward and very accessible, but sneaky structure comes out from middle to finish. There are layers of flavors that unfold with emerging nuance and complexity. (3726 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
