Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 45 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by EMTAME on 1/10/2022 & rated 89 points: This benefitted from a bunch of air, as it seemed out of balance and overly sweet on opening. After an hour, it was in better shape. Ultimately, it was good but not up to some previous vintages, and was easily outshone by the 2013 Quivet ‘Kenefick Ranch’ cab we opened two weeks ago. (1012 views)
Tasted by Cabernet4me2 on 2/18/2021 & rated 93 points: Was on the fence about giving it a 94, and actually think this has plenty of life left there, and might even bump a point. Without being redundant, YM description is pretty spot on, mostly black fruit with a bit of red on the edges and finish, amazing flavors of cassis, dark chocolate, and coffee / espresso.

Popped this and drank next to a bottle of the new Bevan project, and was the WOTN... however to be fair, not a fair comparison on a newly bottled 2019 Bevan "Adversity" Melanson cab. Got in on a Grand Reserve Wine MasterCard in conjunction with ProofLoyalty online tasting with both Russel and Tor Kenward... and man....even though that bottle was a bit disjointed (probably still in bottle shock), its is going to be a monster!! Tons of Blue and Black Fruit with a huge coffee theme.. another winner from Mr. Bevan!! But for the Basic Quivet Napa Cab at $50-60 holding its own next to that behemoth, says a ton about Mike Smiths winemaking!! (1319 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 7/15/2020 & rated 93 points: Digging around in the wine cellar, I discovered this bottle. The last time I opened a bottle was in May of 2016 and it was fantastic, a monster value too. I cracked the cork and I will admit, I didn't expect anything like the wine I enjoyed four years ago. This wine was powerful and very energetic, with a dark purple beet red color, nice dark berry fruit extraction, currants, some tobacco with smooth tannins. This bottle was a surprise, although as dominate in flavors and energy, this bottle has held up really well. There was some acidity that could have smoothed out (with half a bottle remaining we'll see tonight) with some air, but the wine was pretty good. 92+ 93 Points. (1914 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 7/4/2018 & rated 93 points: Huge concentrated wine that was surprisingly expressive for ‘13. Big liquor driven nose of mostly black currants, with vanilla and spice notes. Plush palate, tannins pretty soft and in the background. Seems like a wine to enjoy now and over the next 5yrs or so while the palate/acidity is fresh. (2065 views)
Tasted by WineNot? on 2/16/2018 & rated 91 points: Very Good. Big, heavy cassis, dense, fat, and a touch of oak. I like this wine but its not worth $50 a bottle by comparison to Chappellet or other vineyards.... (2180 views)
Tasted by ledocq on 10/21/2017: Really interesting. First night I couldn’t drink it. Second it was too sweet in the TRB way that many folks like. Third night? Fantastic. I’ll open another in 2022. (1997 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 4/17/2017 & rated 93 points: On night 2 this was a great Napa cab in a polished ripe style. Large scaled, showing hints of heat, with dark fruit liquor and sweet vanilla notes(this is a far cry from Camus vanilla milk shake). Quite aromatically expressive at this stage. Palate is quite polished, fine tannins and a lengthy finish. Really nice. Surprisingly expressive for a '13. (2092 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 3/8/2017 & rated 93 points: Dark fruit, blue and black, cloves, tar, squid ink, some salty minerality, silky smooth body nice balance and length. Medium + body and acidity. Really nice! (2118 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 10/15/2016 & rated 93 points: Extracted dark red fruits sweet tannins and a smooth velvety balanced finish. Great stuff!! (1855 views)
Tasted by ageverett on 8/20/2016 & rated 90 points: Slow ox for 6 hours. Tasted blind with 2013 Myriad NV and 2013 Swagger.

Minimal legs in the glass. Pretty much same color as Myriad - nice and dark, but not as dark as Swagger. Nose is more astringent. Red plum. Cocoa powder. Lithe palate. Same fruit and astringency. Some bite on the finish.

I scored this #3 and it wasn't really very close. Guessed correctly that it was Quivet. Amongst the 3 of us tasting blind, results were varied. We literally all scored them in different orders.

I have had this several times now with disappointing results (although the bar was set pretty high for this price point). As always, I trust Mike and his labels, and gladly went deep on the 2014s, but this one is just not in my wheelhouse for some reason. (2388 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 5/9/2016 & rated 95 points: This baby is gorgeous! Great floral nose, red fruit and dark, deep fruit, currant, plum and blackberry fruit with round nice tannins. Anise, lite tobacco notes. Mike’s 2013 portfolio of Napa Cabernets are simply outstanding. 95 Points. (3029 views)
Tasted by Cabernet4me2 on 4/7/2016 & rated 94 points: Have to agree with all the other notes on this wine, amazing what Mike did and turned it out for $50 a bottle.... stellar!! Lots of Blue and Black Fruit, dark inky purple hue, with plum, cassis, and fig, with a little chocolate & Vanilla toasty oak - but not overwhelming. Wish i had more to enjoy, think this might even have the potential for a point up in another year. (2205 views)
Tasted by t_moderne on 4/2/2016 & rated 91 points: Opened, poured into a decanter, and then back into the bottle. Served about 2 hours later with food (Roast rib cap and roasted carrots, in case you were wondering).
Dark, deep purple color. Nose of black cherries and chocolate.
Big rich flavors of ripe black fruits, some black licorice and chocolate. Nice acidity streak that helps carry the richness of the fruit.
Delicious wine. (1980 views)
Tasted by ageverett on 3/4/2016 & rated 90 points: Slow ox for 3.5 hours. Drank over 1.5 hours.

I still find this very tight - especially given our experience with the Myriad from two nights earlier under very similar circumstances. This is just a tightwad, with a spicy back end.

I think the 2013 Quivets in generally just need more time than Myriad before they are ready to show their goods. Now need to heed my own advice and leave them alone for some time. (2340 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 2/19/2016 & rated 95 points: A monster of an entry level Napa Valley Cabernet, great improvement over my last tasting. Big, yet showing finnese and elegance. Black /blue berries, cassis, smooth tannins, ceader and oak notes, with a pleasant, lingering Finnish, Wow this is an outstanding Cab. This Cab could improve by a few more points. The 2013 vintage will be one to remember.

Day 2: It's improved, the wine has opened and is absolutely a screaming beauty. 95 points and l wish l had more. Bluegoose, you are 100% on target with your assessment on this one. (2269 views)
Tasted by jaxpaj on 2/10/2016 & rated 95 points: This is the most rich and pure $50 napa cabernet you can find. A full bodied mouthfeel that is finished off with velvety tannins. Glad I don't have an unlimited supply....it would make my wine addiction worse! Classic Mike Smith. (2298 views)
Tasted by DaButtah on 1/16/2016 & rated 92 points: Bluegoose is spot on with his note. Drinks so much better on the 2nd night right now. It felt slightly weak the first night despite a long decant. 2nd night it had fleshed out a lot more. Incredibly smooth. Only going to improve with time. An absolute steal at this price point. (1864 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 12/31/2015 & rated 93 points: The rest of a Coravin bottle. This comes across as much more polished and smooth compared to the last taste. Dark fruits, very concentrate with big tannins but seemingly in balance. Cab fruit character still comes through with a hint of an herbal element. Very nice wine in a slightly ripe fruit profile. (1707 views)
Tasted by jaxpaj on 12/23/2015 & rated 95 points: QPR of the year. WOW!! I had to double check the label to make sure I didn't open the Las Piedras. Rich and wonderful (2349 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 12/19/2015 & rated 92 points: 4hrs decant. Very young, almost like a barrel tasting given the prominent fruit and concentration. Nose is black currants, cassis, kiss of vanilla, and milk chocolate. Palate is a delicious mixture of blue and black fruits with plush soft, polished mouthful until the transition to the finish with fine, polished, but very prominent tannins kick in. Around here the acidity becomes apparent as well. Lengthy finish of black fruit and mocha. High quality, but this is going to need 3-5yrs to show well. Lots of potential. (1562 views)
Tasted by ageverett on 11/24/2015 & rated 92 points: Splash decant for 90 minutes. This is wound pretty tight, which I have also found true in the single-vineyard cabs from Quivet for 2013 right now. Enjoyable, and opened up a little, but not a lot. Need to go pull a 2013 from Myriad and Swagger from storage and see how they compare at this stage.

As always, this is excellent value - I just found it pretty tight right now. (2236 views)
Tasted by t_moderne on 11/20/2015 & rated 92 points: This was a pop and pour and tasted both with and without food (some cheese, bread, and a pulled pork sandwich).
tasted after a blind-format Pinot Noir tasting when the group wanted some more wine and needed something a bit richer in structure.
First sip shows bright acidity and tannins that make the mouth pucker, and then the fruit envelopes the mouth, showing black cherries, some chocolate notes and a bit of vanilla on the finish.
Opened too soon and this needs at least a year in the bottle to show better.
Still, an enjoyable wine even though young. (1595 views)
Tasted by dontime on 11/11/2015: Needed to pop one to ensure no ill effects from warm weather shipping. Shows great potential at this price point. A bit heavy on the oak upon opening, but mellowed out over an hour or so. Dark fruit, licorice, and a bit of spice. Stiller stuff. If scoring 91-93, with plenty of upside. (1673 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 10/1/2015 & rated 93 points: Rich, purple burgundy color. A pleasantly odoriferous and fragrent nose. On the pallet dark fruit, anise, sweet cassis, dark berrirs, cocoa powder. Upon opening, a some what youthful and underdeveloped, but given some time airtime this wine got considerably better. Day one with time I score this Cab 93 points. A nice effort and a very good price point.

Day 2, excellent. if you want to drink it now, give it a nice decant. This 2013 is destined to improve buy a couple of points with bottle age. 92.6 Points (2346 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
