Community Tasting Notes (average 92.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 41 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Burgnick on 6/3/2021 & rated 92 points: In the context of the vintage, the 98 Leflaive is extremely well made. Honeysuckle, apple, hazelnut and beewax. Palate is rich, ripe and powerful but there is enough acidity to support the wine. Best to consume sooner than later before the ripeness overtakes the wine. (1604 views)
Tasted by jrobs7777 on 1/12/2021: Looks like we were are getting to the end of the case. What a great wine. 98 is not a heralded vintage but this has held up beautifully. Incredibly fresh and vibrant, still, 22 years in. This easily has another 10-15+ years. It is showing no signs of falling off. Nice fresh apple, spice, other orchard fruits. Great acidity. Nice viscosity. (1484 views)
Tasted by Jammy Wine on 9/15/2019 & rated 92 points: The 1998 Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles is maturing at a glacial speed and barely showing much tertiary flavours. Tasted blind and everyone thought it was 10 years younger. The riper tropical fruits reminds me of warmer vintages like 2009/ 2008. Full bodied with good fruit concentration and intensity, knocking on Grand Cru doors. Expansive flinty minerals which I thought could be Nuits Saint Georges Blanc (got confused with winemaking), great complexity. Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru? 2008? (92/100) (2113 views)
Tasted by dchain on 6/24/2019 & rated 93 points: 2nd bottle from a 90 bottle lot! This one had a French tax label on the top of the capsule. A bit fresher than the bottle a few weeks ago. Liquid popcorn, golden apple and a lovely fresh uplift to it. Very close to grand cru quality and delicious drinking. (1850 views)
Tasted by Jammy Wine on 6/15/2019 & rated 92 points: Wines from Domaine Leflaive before 2004 vintage are stunning and are rarely premoxed. This bottle of 1998 Pucelles is even fresher than the last one I had a couple months ago. Layers of golden orchard fruits, smoked nutmeg and spices, waxy layers of lemon. Mild sour citrus fruit and waxy honey on the finish. Complex and intriguing, it has got the Leflaive magic and Pucelles is knocking on Grand Cru doors. (92/100) (2017 views)
Tasted by dchain on 6/6/2019 & rated 92 points: VC went mad and bought a 90 bottle lot of this because it was cheap so I thought we better try it out given the massive failure of Leflaive to manage its premox issues from 95 onwards. Slightly concerned on first pour given the light golden hue from the wine but on the nose is surprisingly fresh with golden apple, beeswax (but thankfully not too dominant) and some nice minerality also showing through. Very complex on the palate with a hint of Chevalier notes this was really enjoyed by all except MaMa who complained it was “too buttery”. I didn’t agree with that description but it certainly had that butter popcorn/kernel note that might be a bit too much for those who prefer the Roulot style of minimalist wine making. Almost old fashioned in a sense but like the classics there is a greatness to them. Not sure we need 89 of these so will sell at least half but buy and enjoy this for a good example of what white burgundy can deliver! Drink with confidence for the next 2-3 years at least.  Tasted by Jammy Wine on 3/31/2019 & rated 92 points: This 1998 Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles is incredibly fresh and vibrant, a textbook showcase of Leflaive in the golden era. Pucelles is knocking on Grand Cru doors, offering a complex array of flavours - Reductive struck-match / gasoline and burnt popcorn with a layer of ripe orchard fruits. Good complexity and energy. Everyone thought it was showing much younger it is. Textured lees, expansive on the palate, Pucelles sappy-waxy finish. (92/100) (1479 views)
Tasted by drjb on 3/6/2018 & rated 92 points: This is something of a polarising wine. The deep gold colour suggests oxidation but the nose is fresh and tells of a rich somewhat unbalanced vintage. There are no oxidative notes but there is plenty of honey and butter which is not expected of a Pucelle. The palate is round and honeyed like buttered toast with leatherwood honey but there is orchard fruit and some drive and grip to balance. Its not typical of its origins but it is quite delicious tonight ! (1636 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 6/7/2017 & rated 93 points: this continues to impress despite being a relatively off vintage. nice smoke and spiced apple. broad on the palate and into the lovely finish. still has time ahead of it (2115 views)
Tasted by Papies on 2/15/2017 flawed bottle: Puligny Montrachet Masterclass with James Handford MW (Handford Wines, London): Much like a 2 years ago when we had this with James ( Domaine Leflaive Tasting) this was way over the hill, mushroomy, sweet, oxidised and even a few people said it was just a style of age for us it was a gone bottle. (2664 views)
Tasted by FYC on 5/26/2016 flawed bottle: Corked!

Shame since underneath seemed to have pretty good acid and aged notes. (2737 views)
Tasted by jerhardt on 5/10/2016 & rated 93 points: Younger than my last bottle, but still fully mature. Rich and round, but still vibrant. An impressive wine that is a sad reminder of what Leflaive used to be. (2633 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 1/18/2016 & rated 91 points: Light gold in the glass. Medium intense Leflaive nose of matchstick and sulphur on top of sharp citrus fruit and some pineapple. Strong palate delivering red apple upfront with grapefruit and tighter citrus and citrus oils in the back. Wonderful minerality throughout. If one complaint, not a remarkable degree of depth and somewhat thin in the finish. Oxidation totally in check though - perfect condition bottle. Good drinking and still entirely pleased. (2527 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 10/15/2015 & rated 92 points: Full gold. A pure and fresh nose of minerals and citrus when cold. A good backbone of smoke and matchstick. Slate and chalky minerals with stone fruit and ripe pineapple. Bigger aromas when warmer and showing full maturity. In a good place for drinking drink now. (2213 views)
Tasted by jerhardt on 10/13/2015: Drinking fully mature at this point. Solid, complex, and supple, but lacking some of the vibrancy of my last bottle four years ago. Drink up. (1912 views)
Tasted by Papies on 9/21/2015 flawed bottle: Domaine Leflaive with James Handford MW (Handford Wines, London): Dark in color, orange hints. Oxitative on the nose, bready, yeasty (old champagne like but not in a nice way ). Marmite feel. Provided though an interest backdrop to discuss premox in white burgundy and James Handford highlighted this wine as misdiagnosed as premox while it was just a riper, yeasty feel. An interesting discussion but unfortunately did not make us like the wine. Will mark it as flawed. (2033 views)
Tasted by swyang on 6/5/2015 & rated 98 points: All you could wish in a wine, red or white. I am not going to put words to try to pin down the qualities which simply would be absurd... A gorgeous wine, at a gorgeous state. The wine simply seduced me and after 3 days, still can forget the taste which seem to be lingering on... Most refined, yet complex, transparent yet profound. An experience that I don't feel like demystify... but I simply would like to encourage all others to seek out and taste this to be uplifted. (Simply gorgeous with Red snapper) At this point it is no longer, les pucelles,(the virgins) but les grandes dames... Chapeaux bas messieurs!~ cheers, (1780 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 5/30/2015 flawed bottle: White Burgundy (@Private location): Oxidizes. Premox? (1992 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 4/30/2014 & rated 92 points: 1998 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Cheng Hu Tien, Keong Saik Road, Singapore): Enjoyable. Not a classic Leflaive Pucelles, but fun to drink. Saying that though, half the table managed to guess it correctly when blind. It had a lovely, quite arresting nose, almost pungent – with deep wafts of sweet cream over ripe red apples shading into stone fruit aromas, all this wed to a typical flinty, seashelly minerality and little drifts of smoke. Nice. The palate was very good, if not quite up to the level of the strongest of Pucelles vintages. It was creamy, almost oily textured, with rich yellow fruited flavours underpinned by steely mineral and a nice ream of spiciness. There was tons of depth, even power here. And while it was not the most precise, the balance was still pretty decent, enough to made it a great pairing with a chilled crayfish dish. There was just a little bittersweet linger right at the end that was a little distracting, but this was a nice wine overall. On current evidence, maybe time to start drinking up – I do not see this getting much better. (3979 views)
Tasted by jrobs7777 on 8/4/2012: Strong, as usual. Solid. Balanced. Green apple, oak char in harmony. Citrus zest. Drinking perfectly. (3071 views)
Tasted by gsquireh on 4/4/2012 & rated 94 points: Honeysuckle and sweet pear flavors intermix with mineral, straw, fresh fruit aromas. Always complex, aways luxurious, and definitely a long finish. (3297 views)
Tasted by jrobs7777 on 4/1/2012 & rated 91 points: As our inventory of this wine dwindles, it continues to show solidly, although I'm not sure I'd rank this particular bottle up there with some of the best. There definitely has been some bottle variation with this secondary market purchase. This had the classic nose and the pedigree was there, but this lacked the acidity that has bolstered this in the past. Nice char, lemon and green apple with some aged oak coming through as well. (3055 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 2/22/2012 flawed bottle: Slightly oxidized. (2277 views)
Tasted by jerhardt on 11/25/2011 & rated 93 points: Grand cru in all but name. Rich with hints of sweetness, but very vibrant and not heavy. Long finish. Ready to go now. (2916 views)
Tasted by Chuck Miller on 10/28/2011 flawed bottle: Premoxed. (2203 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
