Tasted by ggolec on 6/17/2011 & rated 90 points: Full golden yellow, bright tropical fruit nose with some drawn butter. Taste is an interesting mix of tart citrus fruits initially followed by a deep, rich flavor characteristic of many new-world chards. Nice, racy acidity and quite a long finish. Extremely interesting, and quite complex. Very fun. (4292 views)
Tasted by markjanes on 8/27/2010 & rated 89 points: Dark in color with a neon yellow rim. Aromatically the wine has mod to mod + aromatic intensity (mild for SB) and is packed full of every tropical fruit you can imagine... carries definite new barrique notes of and spice, some minerality in there. No signs diacetyls or botrytis. On the palate the wine is dry has high acidity, some phenolic bitterness, and moderate + alcohol. Balanced wine with the acidity to hold up to the palate weight and huge fruit/moderate + alcohol, good length, great intensity, very good complexity. Some finesse in there, texturally a bit coarse, expression of place, well there if you can place this wine blind not being familiar with it I'd be amazed... I can't say the wine is 'outstanding' given its slight textural issues and lack of expression of place, but the wine offers a ton of flavor in a well balanced package that is a pleasure to drink... near its peak. UNIQUE. (4382 views)
Tasted by Fur in the glass on 8/2/2010: touch of exotic fruit on the nose but generally rather restrained. Tasted possibly of tangerine, pineapple with some vanilla creme and wood. Nice acidity in the background balanced out the fruit. Rich, nutty finish developed later. Went even better with food. Had some chicken and pesto pasta that brought out a slight minty quality to the wine. (4440 views)
Tasted by Mrbuzz on 7/23/2009 & rated 93 points: Mondavi To Kalon Fume Blanc just does it for me like no other. Had the '06 at the Winery(went back a second day JUST for this wine) and it rocked! This is my last bottle of '01, and it continues to be super tasty. It's all about this exotic tropical fruit and spice that you get in no other Calif SB. Coconut oil, banana creme, pineapple, lemon tart, grapefruit...creamy, yet cut with super mineral stone and lemon acidity. This 8 year old SB is fresh as ever, yet has some nice complexed age notes of hazelnut butter, baked apple, toasted marshmallow, marzipan. All still alive as ever.....fresh and tasty. Love this wine.....and the I BLOCK is even better!?!?!?!? (4662 views)
Tasted by Herb K on 4/28/2009: I LOVED this wine... and 8-years of aging on this sauvignon blanc. Perhaps one of the best out of Napa that I have had and I say that with many in mind including Peter Michael, Cakebread, Quintessa's Illumination and Vineyard 29's version, among others. Perhaps the Ta Kalon Vineyard had something to do with the magic of this wine. It was fuller bdied than I expected, yet full of lemons, but not in a harsh way. I want more! And this was my last bottle.... :( (4796 views)
Tasted by whits on 8/1/2008 & rated 92 points: aromas of ripe papaya and mango, flavors of fruit salad with a touch of coconut shaving, pretty lengthy finish, still drinking well, lots of fruit but not sweet at all, interesting, very tasty (1962 views)
Tasted by Mrbuzz on 5/16/2008 & rated 92 points: Pretty similar to the last bottle...maybe a little more tart lemon, some more alcohol fume than I remember? (1989 views)
Tasted by Mrbuzz on 4/18/2007 & rated 93 points: Pale golden yellow in color. Mellow nose of tropical fruit, coconut oil, lemon, citrus blossoms. Refreshingly lite, yet creamy in the mouth....LOTS of tropical fruit(especially coconut), tart lemon/grapefruit acid, grass, slight banana creme vanilla oak, some spice. Not as exotic in spice as others I've had, especially the I Block....but still, very unique in flavor for a Fume. My benchmark, when it comes to Fume Blanc. (2222 views)
Tasted by CP on 6/25/2005 & rated 90 points: Light gold color with just a hint of green. Aroma is heavy on apple with a bit of lime. Palate turns more to tangerine and lemon, lighter on grass, and a hint of figs. Decent lemony finish. Really good stuff. (2698 views)
Tasted by JJA on 4/20/2005: I really like this Fume Blanc. Very good value. Repurchase. (2679 views)

Sauvignon Blanc

Varietal Character

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
