| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by joshabramson on 1/18/2023 & rated 92 points: Beautiful aromatics upon opening, but they blew off a bit with air. Fruit is mostly fresh, slightly muddy, but otherwise this is drinking well. Definitely missing a bit of depth and weight on the finish. Drink up! (1198 views) | | Tasted by MC2 Wines on 5/6/2020: We've been aiming to keep our drinking in a fairly reasonable window which has tended to mean we've mostly been sticking to daily drinkers since we haven't had the opportunity to share wines. This night though we made an exception. On an evening session with Alessandro Lunardi. The official wines for the online tasting were the new releases, but I was thinking quality over quantity so opted for the single bottled of aged Ornellaia. And it was just perfect. A good reminder that there is a big difference between the great wines and the daily ones. Decent power and still some finesse. Lots of black cherry and soil and just a touch of spice notes. It was really lovely. Small pleasures in life and great wine is one of those. (3035 views) | | Tasted by wineismylife on 10/18/2019 & rated 93 points: WIML93

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Followed over about four hours.
Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of pencil shavings, slate, potpourri, spice box and mixed berries. Solid flavors of mixed berries, cherries and plums. Tangy acidity, medium to firm tannin, full bodied. Drink or hold. I'd lean towards drink. In a good place right now. (3240 views) | | Tasted by europat55 on 3/10/2018 & rated 89 points: Nose: B+/B++ Palate: B+ My #8, Group's #10 (99 pts). Part of a Super Tuscan tasting. Tasted blind. (4465 views) | | Tasted by nywine68 on 4/29/2017 & rated 89 points: Enjoyable right out of the bottle but past its peak. After two hours of decanting it was completely gone. (5478 views) | | Tasted by ramblindrunkard on 2/12/2015 & rated 95 points: Deep ruby red in colour, very little bricking on the rim.
It looks and tastes young. Surprisingly vital. It had perfectly ripe Cabernet that Ornellaia does so well but was much more classic in style. Plenty of acidity and fine tannins. Lovely vibrant blackcurrant fruit. This massively surpassed everyone's expectations. A cali-cab for a British palate. Cracking stuff. Tasted at Portland restaurant. (6982 views) | | Tasted by Ralph_ on 10/27/2014 & rated 85 points: From a magnum at a Ornellaia tasting. 1985-2011 all from Magnum (5555 views) | | Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 1/18/2013 & rated 89 points: Winespecials.de Wine Evening: MOTD Italy (Villa im Park / Kirchheim): Event: Winespecials Wine Evening Glass: Zalto Universal Color: dark, deep purple with orange reflexes Nose: medium+ intensity, earthy, fungal Palate: strong acidity, medium+ tanins, spicy, lacks some power in the middle, mushroom Finish: medium+ Not my cup of tea... Gone (8128 views) | | Tasted by NRT on 1/5/2013 & rated 95 points: Still excellent. The presumption is that this is now past its best and will fade. I'm not sure it is so easy to raw that conclusion. In several bottles tasted over the last few years, this wine has just continued to give great pleasure in every dimension. Considering this is only the third vintage of the wine, it stand up against any left bank wine of the same year. It is deep without being heavy or cloying, has great length without being over saturated; it is a symphonic. (6345 views) | | Tasted by Coollawyer on 5/1/2012 & rated 92 points: Beautiful ruby red colour with a very floral nose. Black cherries, oak leather a bit tired but still lovely. Copious amounts of acids with nice tannins and a medium finish. Drink up! (5978 views) | | Tasted by danielk168 on 2/11/2012 & rated 90 points: No decanting, went straight to the glass, leather, then black fruits, probably past its prime but still very drinkable. (4611 views) | | Tasted by taipanli on 9/1/2010 flawed bottle: Second of four bottles from the same auction lot. Both were flawed - completely oxidized, sour and vegetal. (5296 views) | | Tasted by kenthargis on 1/14/2010 & rated 89 points: Quite enjoyable. K enjoyed more. Would have been great five years ago. The fruit was definitely present, but on it's way down. Had the '97 a month ago or so, which was amazing, so this just couldn't keep up unfortunately. If you have a bottle, drink up. (3759 views) | | Tasted by lastone on 6/11/2009 & rated 95 points: Always needed extended breathing since 1st bottle in 2001; 2 were corked, remainder stunning. Rich Bordeaux in nose and palate (95% of Bordeaux should be this good even at this price), perfectly balanced, outstanding with roasted meats, peak window closing. (4199 views) | | Tasted by M DU VIN on 3/9/2009 & rated 91 points: This wine is fully mature, but still has a nice bouquet of dark fruit and earthy overtones. It shows no sign of bricking and will probably hold for several more years. (4133 views) | | Tasted by David J Cooper on 12/7/2008: Dark red. Very much a claret nose with a hint of tea and earth. Still hanging on with decent red fruit. Still some nice tannins. Others knew it was Italian form the acidity. Not me I thought France for sure. Great wine. (3980 views) | | Tasted by Zweder on 7/19/2008 & rated 92 points: Regular dinner group (@ PZ): Just a short blind note and score: Bdx bouquet and taste. Complex. Elegant. Good acidity. Tasted April 26, 2008 at an offline. No formal notes. (4321 views) | | Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 2/22/2008 & rated 95 points: Martin Weiner Italian Winetasting Dinner (Martin Weiner's Westwood Home): Dark medium red color with pale meniscus; cassis, cedar nose; very balanced, cassis, plum youthful palate with herbs and good acidity; medium-plus finish 95+ pts. (3847 views) | | Tasted by Gregory Dal Piaz on 11/18/2007 & rated 91 points: Tight, steely, mineral nose that sets this apart from younger versions. Still retains black currant fruit but all the other elements, slatiness and a strong tobacco note gives this a more than passing resemblance to a fine Graves. A bit of cheesiness reveals it age. This offer a nice, soft resolved entry with lovely tea notes up front building towards a bright cassis midpalate which is a bit compressed on the top. Still taut, cool , yet balanced. Drink em up 2008-2012 (4422 views) | | Tasted by buckeye76 on 6/26/2005 & rated 92 points: LICORICE, BLACK CHERRIES, CLACK CURRANTS, AND SAGE IN THE NOSE, WITH BLACK CHERRIES AND LICORICE IN THE FLAVOR. TOOK 30 MINUTES TO OPEN UP. NICE COMPLEXITY AND A MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH. (853 views) | | Only displaying the 25 most recent notes - click to see all notes for this wine... |

Producer Location (Google Maps)Red Bordeaux BlendRed Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.
Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.OrnellaiaIn 1994 something significant happened for Ornellaia and many of the highest quality wines from Bolgheri in Tuscany. After years of laboring under the humble 'Vino da Tavola' label, these wines were granted a new and unprecedented DOC which not only permitted, but mandated non-traditional Italian grapes. From the 1994 vintage on, Ornellaia has used the DOC Bolgheri Rosso Superiore. [TermOrnellaia (Read more about Ornellaia classification on CellarTracker)].
