Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 1/26/2024 & rated 94 points: Blind. Serious, serious wine. Some greengage and caramel hints to the nose. Good poise and fabulous acidity. Feels of Grand Cru quality. With air some subtle mintiness and some subtle citrus lift. After half an hour there's some Morello cherry and raspberry fruit. A real mineral backbone too. Just goes on and on with the final few sips revealing a charming gaminess that reminds me of pheasant sausage. (243 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 12/7/2023 & rated 91 points: Ripe and exotic with moderate acidity, and it is truthful to the vintage. Drink up. 90-91 (450 views)
Tasted by The Guzz on 6/9/2023 & rated 94 points: Wonderful bottle immediately coming out and showing cards . Maybe not the sexiest Rousseau or vintage, but this was a great showing besting other bottles on the night. Well balanced with nuance, secondary fruit, and emotion. Right bottle right time. (547 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 2/12/2022 & rated 93 points: Pop n pour at casual dinner. Deep dark color. Ripe dark cherries on the nose with a lot of spiciness. Soft, velvety, rich on the palate. Lacked energy, but certainly very enjoyable for the occasion. (947 views)
Tasted by SLab on 10/20/2019 & rated 93 points: Ouvert environ 5-6h avant.
Tasted by Burgnick on 1/14/2017 & rated 91 points: Pob gala dinner: burg al's note is a good reference. A typical 03 nose. Palate is ripe with the acidity is above average for the 03 vintage. For a true burgundy fan, the red fruit ripeness could still overwhelm other elements (3697 views)
Tasted by fontaine on 10/30/2016 & rated 92 points: Pour le 35e de Laurence ! Belle bouteille mais manque un peu de complexité. Belle texture en bouche par contre. (3484 views)
Tasted by hlaburg on 8/15/2015 & rated 94 points: Nose of pure earthy meaty red cherry fruit. Round, balanced, polished with a seductive delicate finish that lingers. Drinking so well now and will age. Rousseau's '03's are stupendous. (4965 views)
Tasted by justburg on 4/9/2015 & rated 92 points: Bright red, rather clear and clean, unlike some 2003s who appear really dark and extracted. Lovely purity on the nose, lots of red roses, violets and a nice honeyed bouquet, extremely pure and brimming with vibrant red fruits. The palate was very fresh, vibrant, with red and blue fruits, coffee, toast, smoked meat, with subtle sweetness at the back palate. This is a really balanced wine, having enough acidity and purity, despite the vintage. (4716 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/17/2015 & rated 91 points: Burg Dinner with Friends (Gander - New York NY): Served alongside Arlaud 1999 CdlR. Ripe black berries with some dark roast coffee and dark chocolate. Comes across as ripe like many 2003s but with above average acidity for the vintage. Very good concentration. First time I can recall trying this wine, it is a 2003 that will keep getting better from here. (4241 views)
Tasted by fc1910 on 12/27/2014 & rated 89 points: An after X- mas wine evenig: next Rousseau CdlR, puh, this is Bourgogne? stewed intense fruit, marmelade, hmmm, the hot summer, delicate velvety flattering bottle, some earthy tones, red berries, concentrated and long, but lacking the burgundy tipicity, maybe will improve by further cellaring, **(* -+), 88- 90+- ? (2595 views)
Tasted by astroman on 7/7/2013: 2003 Burgundy Grand Cru: Not much on nose slightly sweet nose with bright cherry palate with good acid. (3956 views)
Tasted by reichken on 4/7/2013 & rated 90 points: bold lovely fruity. not overly jammy as one would expect from the vintage. nice drink (2667 views)
Tasted by stiang on 2/18/2013 & rated 93 points: Fantastisk nese av mørke bær, granatepler, velhengt vilt - kraftfull pinot. Kraftig og lineær i munnen, flott lengde. GC-kvalitet og vel så det. (2831 views)
Tasted by LWI on 2/17/2013 & rated 92 points: Sunday Night Wines: Served blind. Fairly long brim, some browning, not the darkest. Burgundy? Raw meat on the nose, with some animal fur; Fresh, with fine balance, spicy, some tendencies towards complexity – but still a bit rugged. I am not sure this will get any better. (3114 views)
Tasted by Sycamore on 2/16/2012 & rated 90 points: Earthy, slight '03 character of stewed fruit. Well-integrated alcohol (13% per label). Decent acidity for the vintage. Some tannins come through on the slightly disjointed finish. Left a small pour in a glass for 90 mins and it picked up an interesting maple syrup component. No doubt will be better overall in 5-10 years. (3361 views)
Tasted by reichken on 1/15/2012 & rated 92 points: dark red, deep red cherry flavor, still developing, med long, round and polished. nice wine (2372 views)
Tasted by reichken on 1/31/2010 & rated 92 points: lovely red purple color with purple red fruit nose, a touch of warmth in the mouth but all in all full mouth of youthful red/purple fruit that goes on for quite some time (2871 views)
Tasted by beachbum on 1/29/2010 & rated 93 points: opened to show off the 2003 vintage and a GC great producer clos de la roche, and yup, blew away everything else, not sure on the 2003 concentration, but this wine did have some delicacy.... Rousseau is great, just more of everything than the other wines (2658 views)
Tasted by reichken on 8/16/2009 & rated 92 points: BeerBistro, Toronto- After a long london - toronto flight i was glad to enjoy dinner with Mike and Al. this wine was a great pick me up, med dark color but clear, a rich sweet lovely fruit nose of red fruits and a whiff of alcohol. in the mouth it was lively, vibrant and bright red fruits, but not over ripe, the finish is long and it is well balanced. i enjoy the rousseau 03's as i think he managed to not let them get too jammy or syrupy or cooked. nice wine, long life ahead of it (2829 views)
Tasted by reichken on 7/9/2009 & rated 93 points: god he makes great wine
even in a crazy year like 03, from rousseau you get length , balance and smiles from around the table

Tasted by HandPickedBurgundy on 1/1/2009: Quite full colour. Lovely earthy, dark cherry fruit, with a real feral edge to it. Smooth and supple, sweet and slightly estery. Lovely full body and perfectly refined tannins. Superb winemaking, but ultimately its just all too smooth, and doesn't excite me. Plus there's that worrying estery note. 3+ (2346 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
