Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 39 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by acyso on 11/26/2023 & rated 93 points: Dinner at home (Chicago, IL): Single blind with Dujac. Clearly no stems here, so the identification, with an hour or two of air is pretty easy. Far more opulent and rich than the Dujac, with burlier fruit and tannins. Much larger scaled, with that distinctive 2006 earthy note. I preferred the lither and more elegant Dujac to this, but I do enjoy the intensity of this. (1102 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 11/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Darker in appearance and in terms of fruit profile. Quite muted on the nose at first, a lot more primary than the other wines tasted tonight. With time notes of dark minerality, earth, spices. On the palate equally backward, noticeable tannins, quite tight. Never really revealed lots of detail, remained quite monolithic over the course of the evening. Impressive depth and length. Drink or keep. 92-94? (460 views)
Tasted by DougLee on 4/8/2023 & rated 90 points: Darker ruby color. Nose of deep seated musky berry, rocky soil, violets, plum blossom. On the palate an initial hit of elegantly textured red berry and Bing cherry fruit undergirded by iron and fine earth. Remained restrained and somewhat imploded throughout the night. Ample acidity and firm but smoothed tannin. Moderate length finish of iron and firm red fruit. A very excellent wine to be sure but not giving much on this showing. (781 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 1/29/2023 & rated 93 points: A fine, mature Burgundy, with soft redcurrant/cherry fruit, medium weight, elegant and long on the finish. I have always enjoyed Rousseau’s Clos de la Roche on the few occasions I have been able to drink it, and this is no exception. (789 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/5/2022 & rated 88 points: (Mostly) Burgundy Dinner with Friends (Hughes House - Chicago IL): Not a wine that has ever thrilled me, but tonight's seemed nearly tired and advanced. (1725 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 5/25/2021 & rated 91 points: Day 1: a mature colour, with some brown. The palate is also mature, with medium intensity and good length, but it lacks a little freshness. Good but not outstanding. 90/100.

Day 2: the second half of the bottle was poured into a clean half bottle on opening and corked up to keep the air out. It was, in fact drunk 3 days later, by which time it had filled out a bit and become stylish, elegant and long. Upgrade to 92/100. (1336 views)
Tasted by LB88 on 10/5/2020 & rated 92 points: Opened for a few hours before drinking. Light floral nose peeking through with some restraint. Quite soft and approachable already and certainly more so than the 05 earlier this year. Drinking from now. (1816 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 9/4/2020 & rated 93 points: Far lighter and more evolved than the Dujac, this is mid to full garnet and far more translucent. Autumnal overlays to the ethereal scent of fading fruit alongside hints of mushroom and caramel. Relatively light. still some dryness on the finish without perhaps the density of fruit to fully cover it in the future, this is lovely now. **** (1760 views)
Tasted by sburtt on 8/24/2019 & rated 92 points: Quite a disappointment, specially given the price tag, certainly suffered the year 2006, but overall lacks precision in my opinion, lacks tridimensionality and charm that makes ARs wines so special. Scents of red fruit on the nose, tannin gentle on the palate, but nothing special. (1807 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 4/9/2019 & rated 93 points: Quite an evolved colour, brick with a brownish tinge; mature, lush, raspberry and redcurrant fruit with more vegetal elements, beetroot and mushroom. The mature pinot fruit imparts a slight taste of cola. Well rounded and very long. Fully ready and an excellent wine now. (1794 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 6/26/2018 & rated 91 points: Medicinal on the nose with herbs, wild berries, and sweet spices. Palate was deeper than the 07 but it was a bit four squared and simple for a grand cru. (2497 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/14/2017 & rated 89 points: Clos de Tart Dinner (Cherry Circle Room - Chicago IL): Open 30 minutes before serving. Black fruit with good concentration, just somewhat brawny and burly, so not the most nuanced CdlR in recent memory. Not as exciting as I recall from prior bottles. (3784 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 3/3/2017 & rated 92 points: Stemmy, almost medicinal aromas with oak hints, not fully integrated. Very pure red fruit, persistent. (3332 views)

3,5/5 (3546 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 12/9/2016 & rated 92 points: Opened for two hours. I wouldn't call this the most complex wine at this stage, but it's pretty and has some depth. Floral, bright red fruit. Very good. (3172 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 3/10/2016 & rated 91 points: Started with more bright fruit. With more time in the glass, the nose had more blue and red fruit. Palate was very balanced with subtle fruit. This is better than his 06 mazis and 06 lavaux st jacques. (3838 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 11/27/2015 & rated 91 points: Friday after Thanksgiving (FAT) - Part 1 - Burgundy 2006 (Palm Beach Gardens FL): Small taste, brief note. Open approx 3 hours when tasted. Black cherry, slightly floral, some smoked sausage hints. Ripe but balanced overall. Good now, but upside from here, so I'd cellar further. I preferred this vs Charmes-Chambertin and Mazis-Chambertin. (4621 views)
Tasted by Papies on 7/7/2015 & rated 91 points: Side by side with the much better at this stage 2007 (Papies 93-94).
Quite developed for a GC but in a nice way, good rich fruit, quite floral, light rose feel, light orange blossom feel. On the palate it needs a few more years and it is not as attractive as the nose. Still a pretty good wine not sure worthy of the price tag though for this vintage. 91-92 (3035 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 5/2/2015 & rated 93 points: Lovely nose of red and black fruit, earth and meat. More iron and meat on the palate but dominated by pure and cleaners and black fruit. Great depth and medium finish. Just not enough detail and finesse to be a great Rousseau (3180 views)
Tasted by ProfByron on 3/18/2015 & rated 91 points: Another rich but very (prematurely?) developed Burgundy. If you have this in your cellar beware, time to start dipping into it to check development. (2883 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 8/6/2014 & rated 91 points: Sumptuous red fruit, juicy, some depth, still quite primary, very attractive (2888 views)
Tasted by chatters on 3/26/2014: Burgundy Tasting (Ivy, George Street, Sydney): leather and funk, struck match, over black fruits and spice. Tight and concentrated. In the mouth there is sweet black fruit, tight, concentrated tannin, spice, long finish…massively long finish…just won't quite. Needs a lot more time though. Very nice (3157 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 3/26/2014 & rated 92 points: Sydney Burgundy Celebration (Sydney, Australia): Great aromatics - earth, mineral, vanilla, stemmy notes and cherry. Long and has mineral drive in the mouth. Hitting a decent point for drinking now even, but time will of course benefit it. (3229 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 3/26/2014 flawed bottle: Corked. (2764 views)

Burgundy-Report (12/1/2008)
(Rousseau Armand Clos de la Roche) Medium colour. Again, super and almost seamless aromatics - this cuvée keeps getting better. Intense, yet comfortably textured. There is a step-up in the mid-palate that holds for quite some time before lingering in the finish. This is super.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
